All in all, 21 Savage manages to craft a fairly concise project with Issa Album about all the things that make him such a compelling rapper in today’s hip-hop landscape.
He is so compelling when he digs deeper into his psyche this way, providing more than superficiality, but there aren’t enough of these moments to sustain Issa Album, which is as basic as its title.
For better or worse the album also achieves a certain bland uniformity at times by staying so true to the trap aesthetic and having Metro Boomin produce so much of the music. It's not ill-conceived, it's just that it all winds up becoming a bit monotonous if you don't randomize it and/or mix in some songs by other artists.
Naturally, the beats are excellent across the board, although 21 Savage uses a little more Autotune and makes more of a play for the pop charts with some slinky R&B jams. ... Unfortunately, these reflective moments are outnumbered by repetitive odes to getting high, getting laid, and getting lots of money. What’s worse, some of his lyrics aren’t just bland, but blatantly homophobic.

ok so this album was very interesting to me. cuz the good tracks on this album are amazing. tracks such as Nothin new, Numb and thug life wereok so this album was very interesting to me. cuz the good tracks on this album are amazing. tracks such as Nothin new, Numb and thug life were dope. but everything else is really bad. production throught this album is obviously amazing as he is working with phenomenal producers like metro boomin. his vocals work on his harder tracks but they just sound off on his "love tracks" like special and facetime. lyrics across this album are extremely underwhelming. although it is expected that lyrics arent great in mainstream trap, they are especially bad here. Overall best track is numb and worst is either facetime of 7 minute freestyle. if you want real music from 2017 go listen to DAMN. go listen to All Amerikkkan Bada$$ or even Go listen to I Decided.…Expand

the beats, the beats, on his last few projects 21 had sleepy, simple, cold trap beats but here that's gone and we're left with nearly all the melodies in the very back of the mix. 21 clearly doesn't care about what he is working on i say that because of his sleepy, dry delivery that runs through this album. on his previous records yeah he used this voice but there was an element of a cold, dark grit that he doesn't have anymore. before he sounded like a coldblooded killer that no matter the topic didn't excite him in any way. now he sounds like he's not even trying. i give this a strong to to a light 3
