First 'Rage 2' Gameplay Trailer Looks Like 'Mad Max' -- And There's A Reason For That

Bethesda has dropped the first gameplay trailer for Rage 2, and it actually looks pretty great.

It's a big, open-world post-apocalyptic game that's basically a cross between DOOM and Mad Max. And I mean Mad Max the video game, developed by Avalanche Studios.

Rage 2, as it happens, is also being developed by Avalanche Studios, and you can see the influence below in the first gameplay trailer, which sports quite a few rad looking vehicles alongside its DOOM-inspired BFGs. Avalanche Studios is collaborating with DOOM developer id Software on the game, which is a pretty exciting collaboration. (I know it's too early to say, but this certainly looks better than the original.)

There's a touch of Fallout in here as well, naturally, though this is pure action-shooter with none of that game's more technical combat mechanics (and hopefully none of its clunkiness.) Rage 2, at least in this early stage and in its manicured trailer form, looks surprisingly good---and very silly. I also hope it has less of Mad Max's more tedious elements, and focuses more on the bombastic shooting and exploration.

Check out the gameplay trailer below:

In Rage 2, you play as Walker, the Last Ranger of Vineland, in a world brought low by a giant meteor (no not that meteor Fortnite fanboys.) The devastation hasn't just destroyed civilization, it's led to all sorts of monstrous mutants and other perilous perils, including warring factions battling over what little remains of the earth's valuable resources.

Here's a blurb from Bethesda's announcement:

It’s the perfect mix: id Software’s first-person shooter pedigree, Avalanche Studios’ mastery of the open world sandbox, with a healthy dose of pedal-to-the-metal vehicle combat. From the swamplands and jungles where enemies lurk among the dense foliage, to the open deserts where a passing car is more likely to mow you down than offer you a ride, the world of RAGE 2 is not a gentle, nurturing place. The people who have survived in this landscape have had to learn to protect themselves and keep their heads on a swivel, especially with the reemergence of a familiar menace.

The enemies from the first Rage will also return. The Authority, as they're known, seek to hunt down pureblood 'Arkists' of which Walker is one. These purebloods have special powers which you'll be able to harness in the game.

Speaking of which, you won't be able to get your hands on the game itself until 2019, when it's slated to launch on PC, Xbox One and PS4. Bethesda will have more details about the game during their E3 showcase on Sunday, June 10, at 6:30pm.
