One of the biggest stories over Thanksgiving weekend was the death of John Chau, a Christian missionary who traveled to the remote North Sentinel Island. While attempting to spread the word of Christ to the Sentinelese people, Chau was killed by the tribe, who have been historically hostile to outsiders. Behemoth frontman Nergal has commented on the story, claiming the “idiot” preacher “asked” to be killed for invading the protected island.

The law of India prohibits any travel to North Sentinel Island for the protection of its indigenous people and the safety of others. John Chau had attempted to make contact with the Sentinelese twice before his death, both times being chased away while being attacked with arrows. Chau understood the danger of returning for a third time, writing, “Please do not be angry at them or at God if I get killed.”

In response to an article reporting that International Christian Concern, a religious nonprofit, called for the Sentinelese to be “brought to justice” and charged with murder, Nergal offered the following Facebook post:

“Not that I’m happy when ppl die but hey... this IDIOT has asked for that, no? And now bunch of other idiots follow...😉 Is STUPIDITY naturally inbred in ALL monotheistic religions? I guess so... There’s a saying: ‘play stupid games, win stupid prizes’…”

As of this posting, the Indian government seems highly unlikely to bring any charges against the Sentinelese people.
