The AquaStiq is a small water filter that comes packaged in a small blue tube. It claims to be “the world’s most compact, effective, and efficient water filter.”

The water filter is made by Survival Life and sold online through Clickbank. One tube can filter 1,000 liters of clean water from “virtually any” source – at least, according to the manufacturer.

The tube is marketed towards campers, survivalists, or anyone who wants to prepare their family for emergency situations. It’s a small device that doesn’t have much use when you’re next to clean, running tap water. But it can quickly have a lifesaving impact when you run out of clean, usable water.

Let’s take a closer look at the technology inside AquaStiq to see how effectively it filters your water.

AquaStiq Features

Before explaining how the AquaStiq works, let’s take a closer look at some of its bold claims – because it certainly makes bold claims for such a pint-sized device:

• Removes 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria from the water, including E. coli and salmonella
• Removes 99.9% of waterborne protozoan parasites like Giardia and Cryptosporidium
• Reduces turbidity by filtering particles down to 0.2 microns
• Weighs only 2 ounces
• BPA-free and filters using no harsh chemicals, batteries, or moving parts
• Has an indefinite shelf life

That last benefit is a little vague. The AquaStiq will last for a long time if you just leave it on the shelf and don’t use it. However, you’ll need to buy a new AquaStiq after it filters about 1,000 liters. The filtration system loses its effectiveness over time. You can’t buy a replacement filter to stick in your existing device: you just have to buy a brand new AquaStiq.

One neat feature of the AquaStiq is that once the filtration system needs to be replaced, the straw will automatically stop sucking up water. As the manufacturer explains, “If you can’t get any water through it, then it’s time to toss it.”

It’s also important to note that AquaStiq won’t purify every water source. In fact, it’s missing a few crucial filters that prevent it from being used on any water source. First and most importantly, the AquaStiq is a water filter and not a water purifier. That means it removes only bacteria and protozoa from the water. It will not remove viruses or chemicals like chlorine, fluoride, and heavy metals.

That’s a big problem. some people may have purchased the filter thinking, like the manufacturer says, that it will cleanse “virtually any” water source. In reality, the fact that it doesn’t remove viruses, chemicals, or heavy metals from water significantly reduces the usefulness of this filter.

Picture yourself in a survival situation. You come across a stream. You’re thirsty. You decide to use AquaStiq to drink the water. You hope that there are no viruses, heavy metals, or other contaminants in the water. You walk a little upstream and find a rusty car leaking into the water. You die of heavy metal poisoning a few days later.

Put simply, there’s no good way of knowing where you can use AquaStiq in a survival situation. And that’s a problem that could kill you.

How to Use AquaStiq

Using AquaStiq is straightforward. Here’s the three step process:

Step 1) Remove the cap and put the bottom of the straw into your water source, sipping from the mouthpiece. In situations where the water is too far to touch, connect the hose to AquaStiq and put the end of the hose in the water.

Step 2) Insert the filtered end into your water storage system, like a water bag or bottle.

Step 3) Drink. Use the hose to connect the reserve bag, then filter the water using water pressure.

Basically, your suction sucks the water through the filters in the AquaStiq. There’s no need to pump or use chemicals.

The Technology Behind AquaStiq

We scoured the internet to learn more about the technology behind AquaStiq.

What we found was absolutely nothing.

The manufacturer makes big claims about how it filters 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria, but it never actually tells us how it filters that bacteria.

Many similar filtration systems use activated carbon, where carbon sticks to contaminants in the water and then “sucks” them from the water. This is the popular way to remove heavy metals and other pollutants from the water.

Since AquaStiq doesn’t actually remove heavy metal pollutants from your water, it’s unclear how the filtration system works. Typically, manufacturers like to advertise the technology behind their products. AquaStiq takes the opposite approach.

Who Makes AquaStiq?

AquaStiq is made by a survival equipment company named Survival Life. That company makes a wide variety of survival products and also has an active blog where they frequently post outdoor survival-related information.

The company features a number of tutorials on food production, food preservation, medical care, guns and weapons, and other information that may be useful to survivalists.

Survival Life is also known for something called the Family Protection Association, or FPA, a pricey program that charges you $20 per month for survivalist training courses and exclusive access to Survival Life content.

Should You Use AquaStiq as your Water Filtration System?

At first glance, AquaStiq seems like a remarkable water filtration system. It claims to make “virtually any” water source drinkable.

In reality, unfortunately, AquaStiq doesn’t live up to those big promises. The water filter doesn’t even filter out viruses, heavy metals, or other contaminants. It’s possible that some people have purchased the device believing that it can filter “virtually any” water source, only to become infected or poisoned by using it on the wrong water source.

In a survival situation, you don’t know whether a stream “just” has waterborne bacteria or if it has heavy metals and viruses. That makes the AquaStiq pretty much useless.

When you’re looking for a water filtration system for camping or survival situations, you want something that can clean a lot of water in a short amount of time. AquaStiq cannot cleanse a lot of water in a short amount of time and we don’t even know the technology behind the device.

For all of these reasons, it’s hard to recommend the AquaStiq even at this cheap price.
