The Orville is setting a dramatic new course.
After two seasons on Fox, Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi epic will move to Hulu in Season 3. In making the announcement at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, MacFarlane also revealed that the third season will not debut until late 2020.
“The Orville has been a labor of love for me, and there are two companies which have supported that vision in a big way: 20th Century Fox Television… and Fox [network], which has been my broadcast home for over 20 years,” MacFarlane said in a statement. “My friends at the network understood what I was trying to do with this series, and they’ve done a spectacular job of marketing, launching and programming it for these past two seasons. But as the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise, I determined that I would not be able to deliver episodes until 2020, which would be challenging for the network. So we began to discuss how best to support the third season in a way that worked for the show. It’s exactly this kind of willingness to accommodate a show’s creative needs that’s made me want to stick around for so long.”
That same sentiment was echoed by Carolyn Cassidy, 20th Century Fox’s President of Creative Affairs. “Fox Entertainment has been a fantastic home for The Orville,” she said, “and their willingness to support the show’s move to Hulu is incredibly appreciated. They really are great partners to us on so many shows and this is one more example. We’re thrilled as a studio to find this creative solution which is so meaningful to Seth and keeps the show on track to continue entertaining its millions of fans.”
While The Orville‘s move to Hulu will certainly come as a surprise to fans, the delay between Seasons 2 and 3 should not. After all, they waited nearly 13 months for the series’ sophomore run following the end of Season 1.
Will you follow The Orville over to Hulu (if you don’t already have a subscription)? Hit the comments with your reactions to the big move.
Though I love “The Orville”, I will not pay a streaming service to watch it.
Moving it to a pay-service is a slap in the face to the loyal viewers!
I agree completely. I enjoyed The Orville, but do not subscribe to Hulu, and will not do so for this show.
100% agree.
I love the show but not willing to subscribe to another streaming outlet, I love too many other shows on my Satellite Subscription and I have a fantastic deal on Prime Video , I wouldn’t change providers just for one show.
i forsure love the show enough to get a hulu subscription, seth mcfarlane always delivers, with all the stupid “reality” tv and dumpster fires of other unwanted remakes good content is few and far between.
Totally agree.I like the show but it just died for me.
Boo hoo 😭 ditch cable Hulu’s cheaper and better.
…and quite limited overall.
That’s misleading. It all depends on what and how much you watch. Hulu has just about every current show on the major networks except CBS and a lot of past stuff people may have missed or heard about and want to check out. I often forget they have films too, which I’ve yet to really go through. All anyone has to do is browse their offerings to see if worth it to them. If anyone feels it is, I strongly recommend the commercial free option.
Not misleading at all.
Completely misleading. I have Hulu and I can log into and watch every major network using my Hulu login, including CBS all access.
I like sports. Hulu doesn’t carry those. Or actual news. So Hulu is fine if all you care about is scripted fare. But you will eventually have to get 4+ services, which will end up costing more than my current cable bill.
I have Hulu. I pay $45/month. Tons of channels and yes you do get news. All the network news/local news plus all the major cable news CNN, CNBC, MSN, FOX NEWS etc etc. We also have Netflix…. But we really don’t use it very often. And will the Hulu PKG we have we have 2 TV’s and can record up to 4 shows at once too. Our bill plus internet is still a lot less than the cable bill we had before!
Come November, Hulu will be bundled with Disney+ and ESPN. It will all be available – sports and all. CBS Shows are available too, just on a delay. After debating for about 6 months, I finally got rid of Dish. I pay about $80 a month for Hulu Live, CBS All Access and Netflix and I’m STILL saving about $50 from dish. It’s worth it.
I watch specific international channels that are only available on Dish. Difficult to cookie cutter Hulu to fit all.
The ubiquitous cable/SAT isn’t going away. Major advantages for the 2 platforms is their non reliance on Internet. Cable infrastructure for most has been around forever. SAT can be used in rural areas.
ISP’s are spotty unless one lives in and or near major metro areas.
Why??? No I don’t have Hulu!!!!!!i loved the Orville!!
The ad-free plan will remain $11.99 a month, which means it will now cost double the price of Hulu’s basic plan to watch its content without commercials. Meanwhile, Hulu’s Live TV offering, which includes a Hulu basic subscription along with its 60-plus live channels, is increasing $5, to $44.99 a month.
We already pay (Almost) $300.00 per month to Xfinity. We’re stuck with channels we don’t watch. Mostly sports, but there are others. (I speak two Languages… They’re both English. Nuff said).
We have 2 Premium channels. We’re not allowed to pick what other channels we want. Lets not forget they play games with our 2 Cable Boxes. One Box they shut off for a year, for no reason, and didn’t bother to tells us. They just kept telling us to “Shut it off, turn it back on, unplug it, plug it back in and so on.
We’ll not pay $11.99 or more per month to watch one Program! If Mr. MacFarlane want’s to bite the hand that feeds him… Let him. If The Orville Tanks because of his decision… So be it. It wouldn’t be the first time a Network ruined a popular TV show… On purpose. Disney is known for it.
Satellite TV… Out of the question.
Also not available in Canada.
Not available in Kathmandu either.
Sucks that they are moving it to Hulu. I guess i wont be watching anymore of it then. Im not going to subscribe to Hulu just to watch The Orville, its not worth it. So inturn please consider staying on Fox and i will watch it.
It’s likely to only affect the US market. It’s probably going to continue it’s current distribution in other countries.
I hope that’s the case. When The Mindy Project moved to Hulu, it continued to air on its Canadian network, so there is precedent.
It will be soon-ish
I’ll believe it when I see it. I’ve been hearing that since it launched.
Because it’s an AMERICAN show, not a Canadian show. If you want shows create your own!
that’s all find and dandy for USA.. but I correct me if I’m wrong.. I don”t believe Hulu is available in Canada, so there goes a lot of viewers’
Canadian viewers don’t count for the US ratings, they count for CityTV who has the Canadian broadcast rights. I expect that will continue, unless Fuzzy Door/20th Television makes a new Canadian Distribution deal.
Again, it’s an AMERICAN show. Not a Canadian show. You guys don’t matter to our ratings. Make your own shows. Stop stealing all of OUR stuff.
that’s all fine and dandy for USA viewers, but correct me if I’m wrong I don’t believe Hulu is available in Canada.
Why should we have to pay AYTHING when we used to be able to watch the Orville for free?
Not Cool!
ANYTHING
If you like paying for what you can get for free, go for it.
I love the show and while I already have hula if I didn’t I’d be there . I think I’ve seen the first 2 seasons 4 or 5 times. That may sound nuts but can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve seen Star trek.
I second that sentiment – thumbs up!
I’m very disappointed. I guess I will have to wait yuntil someone else comes out with a new space show. I’m not giving Hulu money for only one show. Like Connman said “Moving it to a pay-service is a slap in the face to the loyal viewers!”
Not sure if a lot of people are aware but there are several ways to get streaming services for free. Personally, I have Sprint for my cell service which gives it’s customers Hulu for free. I also have Comcast which offers Netflix free as part of some packages. I know Verizon and At&t also offer similar services as well.
While you get some services for free now, that won’t always be the case. They want you to start liking something, so that you’ll pay for it later. Enjoy it now. There is a decent chance that Hulu won’t be free for you in mid to late 2020 (wouldn’t be shocked if it is ultimately pushed to early 2021). How “not miffed” will you be if you have to pay for it in the future?
I watch orville on Vudu streaming service. It is a pay service, but you only pay for what you watch. So you can get the each season of orville for about $19.00 U.S dollars a year.
Oh, so I only have to pay $19 a season for something that I paid $0 for before? Multiply that by every show I want to watch and uh…..I think I’ll pass.
I guess you like the show enough to complain about it on the internet, but not enough to actually support its production. Did you even read the article?
My sentiments exactly. I am sick and tired of this trend to move shows to streaming! I loved The Orville, but enough is enough.
Agree!
Then you’re really not going to like the day when all shows are on streaming services. That’s where the broadcast networks are headed. Not immediately, but within the next 10 years. Just look at CBS.

People can whine all they want but a majority of my favorites aren’t even on network anymore.
Agreed , I can’t believe what a bunch of cry baby’s all these people are!
Personally I love the show and Hulu can be shared by several people so go find some friends and each of you pay a couple bucks a month and enjoy this awesome show as well as the entire Hulu experience with all the Hulu original programming.
Life is too short to make such a fuss about this kind of thing. I look forward to season three and I’m just happy that there will be a 3rd season no matter where it lands.
bite me
I was watching on Hulu anyway, so… I mean, when the Orville first aired, I was staying with mom and she’s in a place where the only way she will get OTA signal is with an outdoor antenna, which she does not have and can’t afford on her fixed income. But she already has internet, so Hulu lets her watch a LOT of content.
I just want to point out that if you subscribe to Hulu, there’s more than the Orville to enjoy. There are Hulu originals like Handmaid’s Tale, which is absolutely worth a Hulu subscription by itself. I have binge watched so very many shows from beginning to end on my profile under mom’s account.
Now I’m not at mom’s, I finally got my Disability and income after a 5 year battle. I have moved into my new apartment, and I don’t have internet just yet, but I will soon, and then I will sign up for my own Hulu account. Mom does the least expensive with commercial breaks, so she can afford one premium channel to watch things like Ray Donovan and Game of Thrones, Outlander, and so on. Me, I think I’ll probably go with the commercial free since I hate how they are loud and bright (commercials tend to provoke intense, immediate migraines for me). I will likely partner with my daughter, and she can split the cost – so that we can both happily watch Hulu plus at least one premium channel at a time (to occasionally change which one we’re getting, depending on what’s airing).
Hulu is so much more than one show, guys. And the price for the lowest tier is absolutely worth it for supporting some fantastic shows.
That’s fine. I have a massive dvd collection and I don’t really need live TV. They move everything to streaming I’ll just watch my dvds.
ok course everyone wants something for free animals
Free? I pay my cable company A LOT and they pay the networks.
Good lord. It’s 5.99 a month. Many spend that on coffee. Wait for it to be released and you can watch the episodes and then cancel the subscription!
You do realize you’re telling a demographic of viewers that watch tv for “free”?..are on a fixed income, etc?
°
It does add up tbh.
One needs a decent internet speed package with enough data/month,.
Why stop there?
Basic cable/SAT packages.
…other shows outside of Hulu, Cable/SAT?
…MO $$$ for additional subscriptions!
Easily couple hundred Benjamins/month.
Thank you.
You can watch almost all cable shows on Hulu. You have ABC NBC FOX plus I think HBO AND SHOWTIME all on one streaming service. You even have the option of getting a live tv package so you can have everything cheaper than cable
That is all fantastic if your internet is capable of streaming. Many live in rural areas where great (and somewhat affordable) internet is not available.
Amen!
Hulu is a bargain @ $5.99 a month . Why not?
And you think it’s going to stay at $6 a month permanently? You guys amaze me!
I believe that Hulu’s $5.99 rate includes megatons of commercials. However, there is an easy solution. Join only long enough to view the series you want to see when it comes out, then cancel before being billed for it!
I also agree. It seems the trend is to remove free TV for either paying cable for local stations, which they remove or pay for all these streaming options to make money. Sorry to see it go; like some ma y other shows. Not paying to watch free shows.
I already get a large party of my entertainment from streaming services such as HULU.
I have a subscription to Hulu and use it to catch up on my shows. I personally don’t care where The Orville is moving to, I love the show and I am just ready for season 3.
Couldn’t have said it better.
I agree. If they REALLY cared about their fans, they wouldn’t be going to a pay service. I swear these people have no idea of what it’s like to be the average person who scrapes to make ends meet! Sadly, I must say good-bye to The Orville. It’s entering into a universe I can’t afford to follow! And I believe it will lead to the death of the show as many fans drop away. This disabled senior is VERY disappointed.
Here’s the deal. FOX wasn’t going to air it, PERIOD. So if it didn’t move to HULU you weren’t’ going to have it all. The only reason season three is being made is because HULU is paying FOX to film it.
One would think that they had learned a valuable lesson from their experience with canceling Firefly. But no, they have not.
I will be moving back out of my mom’s house in the next few months, and her entire TV ability comes via Hulu. I will absolutely be doing the same, via Roku. Netflix and Hulu pretty much has all I need. I’m just thankful that The Orville will continue, because it’s fantastic.
Not true! It was approved for a season three on fox! They wanted to take the shoe further so moved to streaming! Get your facts straight!
NO, FOX would have given him a deadline to end production in order to get in the 2020 season lineup. If he misses that deadline his production company loses big time money. Fox TV can just say “sorry you weren’t ready so we are canceling” Shows Over!
Re: FireFly. It was canceled, not renewed. not picked up. It’s sequael was a movie. All the whining and crying did noting except get some one to invest in a movie.
Maybe it will be put on dvd at some point, and you can check it out for free from a library. My mother does this sometimes.
AGREE!!! I LOVED this series, but what a sell out. Shame on you Seth!!
I completely agree! I will miss the Orville but I can’t afford to sign up for services to see one show. Too many shows are doing this to us. It’s all about making money and the heck with us. So sad!
I agree i feel as if its a kick the butt to loyal fans. I live in an area that does not support streaming services with out paying ridiculous amounts of money so i reley on my satellite TV. I am disappointed on this move. Hopefuly with fox being so accommodating they should get the rights to first run syndication
You’re already paying for cable…
totally agree with you
guess I’ll wait until it gets on DVD
UGH!!!
Are you poor?
That’s not nice. Poor? You are a snob. MOST people work for a living & have to budget. Whether it’s $1 or $100 – You can bet HULU will be raising prices. It adds up & by you trying to shame someone.. well shame on you! I can afford it but I won’t pay for it because there are lots of other shows in the premiums I pay for. I did like watching The Orville – but no big deal – just another show that will get cancelled.
Agreed!
I too agree completely. No way will I pay for another streaming service!…for this or any show.
I want it to come back on fox I like that show and I miss it.
Grow a pair get the disney plus hulu ESPN plus bundle fo 12.99
Agreed. I won’t watch it anymore either.
I love “The Orville!” Sad that we’ll have to wait longer for season 3 but hopefully it’ll be back bigger and better than ever. –chinlin
really like the show but definitely will not pay for hulu to see it
😭 no one cares.
Obviously you do since you have replied to multiple people who say the won’t get Hulu. If you truly didn’t care you would have just ignored them LOL
Thinking the same thing…
No one cares
Good on you Scott! I agree!
Well, that’s disappointing. Not even an option in Canada. No Orviille, no Veronica Mars and no Star Trek: Picard (CBS All Access). Even if I wanted to pay it for it I can’t :)
Star trek Picard will be airing on space
Veronica Mars season 4 (Crave), Star Trek Picard (Space Channel). No idea for The Orville
Picard will be airing on Space if you have it.
I can’t see how Fox is happy to have one of their shows leaving to go to a streaming network unless Fox has some connection to Hulu? What’s next for MacFarlane… Family Guy will be leaving as well?
Fox owns a majority share of Hulu
Actually Disney does. They got Fox’s shares as part of the merger.
Yet another who will NOT add another streaming service.
Jist left Netflix after 3 years because they dropped every show I would have stayed for in favor of stuff I have no interest in, except one, and I won’t pay anything for a service with only one show I care to watch.
With the trend of seasons being much shorter than they used to be, like 10-12 episodes per season, it’s time to pick up a new hobby, healthier too.
Sorry Seth! The one show I would want to see isn’t worth $60 a year to add Hulu.
Too bad.
Also too bad cable and satellite lobbied for the demise of long distance analog over-the-air television… A station used to have a 100-150 mile range depending on recieve antenna, and now the force to digital reduced range to 40 miles.
Worse, these streaming services that claim to provide local channels only do if you live within reception range (40 miles) of a station or onenof their translator transmitters, if you can’t get it over the air, they won’t stream it to you.
This is very sad.
It would have been nice if Fox had at least decided to continue streaming The Orville on their FOX NOW service…
Oh well.
Thankfully, Amazon has decided to pick up The Expanse, and continue it finally, with new seasons starting in the next 12 months.
Now, that’s a good show too, and proper SciFi.
The Fox tv network is now a separate entity and has a somewhat full schedule, so a delay until late 2020 probably was not in their best interest from a scheduling perspective. On the production side, Disney acquired the studio and also owns a majority in Hulu. A little synergy in action.
No, The Fox television network is now owned by Disney who owns a majority of Hulu. Fox Sports and News were broken off and not acquired by Disney.
Disney bought the studio, not the broadcast network.
Uhhh, WRONG! Disney has acquired the FOX network and the production studios. It’s FOX NEWS and FOX SPORTS that they did not acquire.
Just another way to make you pay to watch programming that was free. Soon with all the stream for pay shows, your bills will be larger than the cable/satellite bill. Too many upcoming services, and believe me their prices will rise, until they figure it out that they will all be losing money, and than the mergers will start. It’s coming, not now, but in a couple of years.
Disney own it .
Not inclined to see subscribe to another streamer. Already have HBO, Netflix, CBS All-Access and Prime.
Can’t say I’m not disappointed. Waiting a bit longer sucks, but Hulu? I’m not sure about paying for one show…
If you watch almost anything on abc, fox and nbc it’s on Hulu the next day with no commercials. Cheaper to watch a day late on Hulu and get rid of cable.
There are apps that have those shows you can see the same day that are free
As opposed to most others, I’m happy about this. I already have a Hulu subscription so it’s all good.
This a a surprise to hear… I do not have Hulu, so no i want follow it.
…won’t follow.
Doesn’t bother me where I pirate it from.
Edgy!
I really like The Orville, especially its subtle sense of humor, but I wont be following it to a paid streaming service
Disappointing news.
If the show airs for free on Hulu basic the next day (if there is such a thing) I will watch it. I already paid CBS all access to watch ST Discovery but I’m not sure about Orville. I really like the show and bought the first season but I do t think I could not afford having Hulu as a paid subscription for one show.
I also have Netflix and Prime.
Unfortunately they got rid of the free one a while back
Sorry to see it leave, won’t be following it on hulu!!!
Too bad about the delay, but the move makes sense. It doesn’t seem like the type of show Fox would now air. It’s gooing to be sports, wrestling, reality tv and the Simpsons.
What’s the deal ? Another show that has a great fan base that gets moved to a pay channel. The same thing happened with Star Trek. I guess I won’t be watching The Orville any more.
Move to Hulu? So, I would need to subscribe to yet another cable service? That bites… I think you will be losing a lot of fans…
🥺
Sorry Orville moving to Hulu
Bye Bye Orville, it was fun
I, like so many others, am disappointed that The Orville is moving to Hulu. I can’t afford to add another service, so I guess I’ll have to part ways with another show I enjoyed. It’s sad.
You can use couchtunner if you don’t want to pay. I using in my country and many site uploaded episodes from cable shows.
This is a shock to me as I don’t have internet available to me to stream hulu at my home but I do love The Orville so now I’m kinda bummed out!
Hell yeah! Love The Orville. Being a Trekkie, this show is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. Plus being really funny helps. 🤪
Sorry, I will not pay for another channel just to watch this show. My husband and I love the show and never missed an episode but this goes too far
I find this decission very strange.Usually, shows change channel when they are falling in ratings and tht’s not the case.
Welp bye Orville.
