The Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw hits theaters next month, and according to star Dwayne Johnson, it won't feature a scripted line about Idris Elba's character referring to himself as "black James Bond." Picking up directly after the events of The Fate of the Furious, the movie teams up federal agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and former SAS operative turned mercenary Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). Although the two are strongly at odds, they put aside their differences to stop terrorist leader and criminal mastermind Brixton Lore, played by Elba.

In Hobbs and Shaw, there's a moment where Idris Elba spreads his arms out wide and declares, "I'm black Superman." As told by Johnson, the line was originally supposed to mention James Bond rather than Superman, but Elba personally nixed it. "That's too close to what everybody's talking about," the actor was quoted as saying, referring to the fan casting lists found online calling for Elba to take over as Bond. The line was then changed to Superman, but although Johnson says he came up with this alternate line himself, Elba claimed in a separate interview that the line was ad-libbed. Either way, Superman does seem to be a better choice.

Of course, now that the next 007 has been cast, it's starting to look like we won't be seeing a new James Bond after all. Bond 25 will feature Daniel Craig reprising the role once again, although his 007 codename has reportedly been passed off to a new character played by Lashana Lynch. This is because Craig's Bond has officially retired as an agent, only to be reluctantly called in for one last dangerous mission. Depending on the success of the movie, future installments could have Lynch as the lead character moving forward. If future movies continue to be set in the same universe, we won't be seeing anyone else playing the agent in a new movie anytime soon.

Because he's such a popular actor, Elba's name comes up often when it comes to fan casting popular movies. Following the casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel in Disney's upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, many fans began calling for Elba to play her father King Triton. BossLogic even created some awesome fan art depicting how the actor might look in the role, and it did look rather convincing. As of this time, the part remains uncast, but the online reaction to the suggestion has been extremely positive in favor of Elba in the role. Meanwhile, Melissa McCarthy is reportedly in talks to play Ursula the sea witch, and Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are set to play Flounder and Scuttle.

Hobbs and Shaw will release in theaters everywhere on Aug. 2. Whether or not he ever plays James Bond, we'll be seeing plenty of Idris Elba in the futre. As for Bond 25, we can all see how Lashana Lynch does as the new 007 when that movie hits the big screen in April 2020. This information comes to us from Variety.
