Creek boys, University's Werblo advance to regional golf tournaments

DELAND — Spruce Creek's boys golf team will return to the regional tournament for the 16th consecutive season.

The Hawks placed second in the District 3-3A tournament at Victoria Hills Golf Club with a team score of 294, 11 shots behind champion Lake Mary.

Junior Ian Ball broke par with a 2-under 70, part of a three-way tie for the low medal. Davis Brooks added an even-par 72, and twin brothers Chase and Cole Haygood shot 75 and 77, respectively.

University's Bryce Werblo punched his ticket as an individual qualifier, shooting a 1-over 73. The Titans, who won the district tournament in 2018, only fielded three players this time around and were not eligible to defend their title.

As for the girls, defending state champion Lake Mary cruised to the district crown with a 301 total, 96 shots better than runner-up University. Gabby Perlstein fired the low round of 74, with teammates Alyssa Mercado (75) and Izzy Pellot (76) right on her tail.

Kenna Kelting turned in the top score for the Titans with an 87, followed by Jordan McKendrick's 89 at Tuscawilla Country Club in Winter Springs. Flagler Palm Coast's Katie Parsons earned a spot at regionals as an individual with a 93.

Matanzas sweeps District 3-2A

Beatrice Dietz was the low medalist with a 78, guiding Matanzas to victory in the District 3-2A girls golf tournament at Palatka Golf Club, the team's first crown since 2010.

The Pirates posted a team total of 387, comprised of Dietz (78), Katherine Bentley (93), Sarah Barrett (107) and Halley Gearst (107).

The boys followed suit with Tuesday with a first district title in program history. Erik Libby had the Pirates' best round (81) as the team turned in a 335 score.

Colee, Lopez move on

News-Journal 2018 Girls Golfer of the Year Lisa Colee finished 1-over as Father Lopez placed third in the District 6-1A tournament on the Jones Course at LPGA International.

Eden Tsouklaris placed 10th at 8-over, and Elizabeth Carvajal was 11th at 11-over.

Lake Mary Prep coasted to the team title as three players ranked among the top four. Victoria Zheng paced the Griffins with a 2-under round.

NSB, Seabreeze advance

New Smyrna Beach and Seabreeze will send both their boys and girls golf teams to next week's regional tournament.

Anchored by senior Derek Sanderson's 2-under 69, New Smyrna Beach finished second out of seven teams at the District 6-2A competition held at Dubsdread Country Club in Orlando. Willi Robinson fired a 77 for the Barracudas.

Seabreeze placed third, 14 shots behind New Smyrna Beach. Matthew Hewitt paced the Sandcrabs with a 79.

Only three schools fielded girls teams, with Seabreeze taking second and New Smyrna Beach third. Hannah Ashton carded an 86 for the Sandcrabs.

Three Atlantic golfers qualified individually — Jacob Schaaf (85), Erica Darcy (74) and Tylar Whiting (77).
