Painful Silence

Summary:

Chapeau reminisces about Adam's mother and him.

Work Text:

Chapeau watches as the birds fly by the group of trees. The violin rests beside him. He is sitting on the bench, his eyes never leaving the white roses which are placed everywhere in the garden. It’s been a while since he doesn’t visit the garden. White roses give the scent away—it is so vigorous and so adequate. They remind him of someone so dear—it may be painful for him to remember, but they still remain there.
Anise. Adam’s mother. The name pops up in his mind, yet it wrenches his heart. He knows that she is in better place. After all, he is comforted by the thought of her watching over everyone—especially Chapeau from above. Ever since she is gone, he would pick the violin up from the case and still play with it gracefully, thinking of nothing but of her every night.
Chapeau closes his eyes tightly. He’s in pain, so much he wants to shrug it off. Words surge through his head, telling him to scream all of them out. He just wants to let it out. But he can’t; he clearly doesn’t want anyone to know that he’s in pain. That he suffers so much. In silence, he suffers while letting everyone enjoying their time.
The memory of Anise comes; he sees his younger self and young Anise appearing. They would sneak out and hide from Adam’s father, Louis. Then, they would take a stroll around the garden. They are laughing and holding their hands. Anise leaning her head on his shoulder, and Chapeau smiling. Sweet whispers echo, and then he sees his younger self kissing Anise in soft and passionate way.
No. He can’t. Please.
He is pulled back into the reality when he opens his eyes. Scanning around the garden, he barely curls his lips up. Almost a smile, but quite depressing.
Chapeau pushes himself to his feet, picking the violin up. He sighs. He then plays with it, comforted by the music. He leans in for a bit, feeling the sounds from the violin, then he closes his eyes again. He lets the music flow as it rings in his ears.
He feels as if the ghost of Anise is watching him from behind—sitting in the bench. He imagines that she would smile and clap excitedly.
Tears fall down. How he misses his secret lover, Anise! For her—he vows that he will take care of Adam. For her—he will protect him no matter what life costs him. Now... he stays in shadows, keeping the wrenching memories to himself... in painful silence.
And then he releases the final note from violin.
