We may never get to see Clerks 3 actually happen as a movie, but a few select Kevin Smith fans will get to hear what could have been next month. The filmmaker has announced he will conduct a live reading of his unproduced screenplay for the proposed sequel in his home state of New Jersey this August. What's more, all of the proceeds are going to a good cause.

Kevin Smith took to Twitter to reveal the news. He will be holding the Clerks 3 reading at The First Avenue Playhouse, which is where he originally held open auditions for the first Clerks more than 25 years ago. All of the proceeds from the event will go to benefit the theater, which is in need of funding. Here's what Smith had to say about it on Twitter, where he also shared a poster for the upcoming event.

"This August, in the great state of New Jersey! Come hear what might have been, when we read the unmade Clerks III script! There are only 80 seats at a pricey $100 apiece, but all the money goes to The First Avenue Playhouse (it's a Benefit for them)!"

Unfortunately for those who were hoping to get in on the action, tickets for the event are already sold out. But, considering that Kevin Smith regularly sells out much larger venues around the country for live tapings of his various podcasts, or for speaking engagements, it's not at all surprising to find out that those 80 seats for such a special event went so quickly. In any case, those lucky few are likely going to get the closest look at what could have been.

It's not yet clear who else will be participating in the live reading. The event page just says "friends." Though, we can assume that Jason Mewes will be along for the ride as Jay, and that Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson will be back as Dante and Randall, respectively. Though, it was previously revealed that Anderson had opted out of doing Clerks 3, which is partially why the project fell apart in the first place. Undoubtedly, Kevin Smith will have some surprises in store for the audience. With any luck, maybe this will generate interest in actually getting the sequel going for real?

Prior to taking on his latest movie, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which will reveal its first trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Smith had been working on Clerks 3. He completed the script in May 2013 and it looked like the movie was perhaps going to shoot in 2014. Yet, it never happened. Last year, Smith indicated that he may revive the script and turn it into a comic, but there are no plans to actually get the movie made, officially speaking, for n. Those who are interested in learning more about the script reading can head on over to the official Eventbrite page.
