Troy Aikman slams Jerry Jones, Jason Garrett: Don’t know how Cowboys come back from this

Troy Aikman has some advice for Jason Garrett.

The Fox broadcaster slammed his former backup quarterback in postgame comments after the Dallas Cowboys’ 31-24 loss to the Chicago Bears.

"I don't know how you come back from this. I really don't," Aikman, the Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Cowboys quarterback, said on the Fox postgame show. "They got embarrassed in that game."

Aikman questioned whether Cowboys players are buying into hope on the basis of playoff contention.

"I don't know how you sell that if you're Jason Garrett or Jerry Jones or anyone," Aikman said. "When you have a performance like that to say, 'Hey. But we’re still alive. We’ll go play this week against the Rams and it’s all right out in front of us.'

"I don’t think the players hear that. I wouldn’t hear it if I were them. And this is on the players as much as it is on the coaches. They've got to be better. I’m not sure I’d even talk to the team this week. I'd just say, 'Let’s go play next week and you guys figure it out.'"

Garrett is in his 10th season as Cowboys head coach, compiling an 83-66 record in that stretch. Only five other NFL coaches’ tenures date longer, and all have won a Super Bowl. Jones said after a loss to the New England Patriots that he wants Garrett to "get it done." But after the Cowboys’ third straight loss — and seventh since opening the season 3-0 — Jones reiterated after Thursday night's game that he will not fire Garrett before the Cowboys host the Los Angeles Rams next week.

“Everybody that’s healthy that’s coaching will be coaching,” Jones told reporters from Soldier Field.

After hosting the Rams, the Cowboys head to Philadelphia then host the Washington Redskins, both also in contention for the title in a weak NFC East. The 6-7 Cowboys remain in first place of the division despite their losing record. The Philadelphia Eagles, at 5-7, host the New York Giants on "Monday Night Football."
