The product is a nice idea, it just that the fact that Facebook made it is what kills it.

Video and microphone directly in the living areas, just what we need. 

The only company I'd somewhat trust with this is Apple. Their dedication to privacy is compelling.

If they open-sourced this I'd somewhat trust it but it's a Facebook product so I wouldn't keep my fingers crossed.

Interesting there was literary not a single bad thing mention about the product. Disappointing...

So.. its literally just a tablet that annoyingly pans and zooms the camera around randomly?
Like, if I want to focus on a specific person... I can do that. I don't need a device to tell me who to focus on.

I thought Facebook had a phone years back. Maybe the distinction is that Facebook made this device in-house instead of partnering with a device manufacturer?

I just about puked when I read the title of this thread. People will buy it and Facebook will continue to sell their info to the highest bidder.

No way, it is all made overseas by poor 3rd world people most often in horrible work conditions. It then is shipped to the USA where one part is put on and its labelled as "Made in the USA".

As soon as I saw the product itself, I was like "It's a no from me."

However, part of me is interested in putting like a bunch of K-pop videos in front of the camera and seeing if I can make the Facebook spies who are looking through it die of Korean overdose, and occasionally sing along to annoy the spy even more, because I'm evil like that and if I knew I had a spy looking through the camera, I'd make sure they're living in hell when the camera is on me.

... But I digress.

Also, technically the oculus rift is facebook hardware.

what a pointless product for consumers. i can only see this being used for businesses....are video calls even that common (again, for consumers) that people have to have dedicated hardware for it?

Seems like a nice enough way for Millennials to keep in touch with their Baby Boomer parents.  And I could imagine it as a nifty way to video chat while doing something else... like, say, moving around the kitchen and cooking.  

It's not a product for me, though.  I suppose a BBS forum will tend to be populated by people who scorn audio/video chat in favor of the written word!  

Yeah, hard nope on this. I trust facebook about as far as I can throw their hq building. They can say whatever they want about how secure and private it is that doesn't make it true.

After spending a long time thinking, I figured out there was only one thing missing from my life....  I was really missing giving facebook hundreds of my own dollars so they can put microphones and cameras in my house. Seriously though, "sure" they put a camera off button but, unless that button physically disconnects the power to the microphone and camera, it might as well not be there. I hope facebook paid good money for this video, it sounded like you were just reading the provided script from facebook. Where's the Linus that takes the whole thing apart to see if the button does any actual switching, or if it's just a gimmic to provide an illusion of safety?

The beginning part, reminds me of this

To be fair, the camera moving and widening the shot when someone enters is pretty sophisticated. Video processing is hard as hell and theirs seems to work well.

With that said, there's no way in hell I'd ever use this product. I haven't even been on facebook in years. And with how often facebook gets hacked? Yeah... no.

First LTT video I'm disliking, I thought you were "pro privacy" as stated in other videos, and this Facebook device is the opposite of privacy.
Money talks, I guess.
