Palos Heights Residents Say 'No Dice' To Video Gaming Referendum

Voters shoot down referendum question on video gaming in Palos Heights.

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL -- Palos Heights residents voted a resounding NO to allowing video gaming within city limits. Voters were asked, "Shall video gaming be permitted within the corporate limits of the City of Palos Heights?"

The Illinois Video Gaming Act was introduced on July 13, 2009, regulating the use of slot machines in licensed establishments in Illinois. The Video Gaming Act legalizes the use of up to five video gaming terminals (VGTs or slot machines) in any establishment with a valid liquor license, such as bars, restaurants, coffee shops hotels and truck stops, as well as fraternal and veterans organizations with a national charter. Such establishments must be located in a municipality that has opted in to allow video gaming.

The Orland Park Village Board voted to allow video gaming in August, despite two confusing advisory referenda placed on the March primary ballot on which residents voted down the question of allow video gaming by a slender margin of 51 to 49 percent. As in Orland Park, residents are lining up on both sides of the issue in Palos Heights.
