It is not just a tribute but more of making a point clear. Sangeetha Pookkalam, a series of musical programmes organised at Mahila Mall in Kozhikode, is different from the usual ganamelas.

The programmes are held every Saturday and Sunday featuring an iconic woman singer.

“The themes and singers are deliberately chosen. After all, woman empowerment is our motto,” said M.V. Ramsy Ismail, Kudumbashree project officer of the Kozhikode Corporation. Sangeetha Pookkalam started on December 1 with Asha Bhonsle Night in which Rijisha was the lead singer. The Ghazal Night on December 2 was led by Thanha Ummer. Fasila Banu rocked the audience with some peppy numbers in the Vilayil Faseela Mappilappattu Night on December 8, while S. Janaki Night on Sunday featured Sibella Sadanandan.

More musical evenings are in the offing, including a K.S. Chitra Night on December 15 led by Srikala and a P. Susheela Night on December 16 led by Keerthana Sabareesh. Similar programmes will be held on Christmas eve and Christmas day, besides the New Year eve, though the singers are yet to be announced. Coming from a group that set up the first mall in the country with an all-woman crew, Sangeetha Pookkalam is a trend-setter. “Several women singers have never been honoured together in such a manner before,” said Anjusha, a visitor to the mall, on Saturday.

“We have roped in some of the best singers available within our budget and will continue to do so,” Mr. Ramsy Ismail said.
