That’s the view of Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer, who says that lining up alongside better players is also helping the 24-year-old.

Barkley has struggled with injuries and form since his £15m move to Stamford Bridge from Everton in January.

But he now seems to be showing signs of his potential with the arrival of Sarri from Napoli in the summer helping him.

Alongside Jorginho and N'Golo Kante, Barkley has been vying for a starting berth with on loan Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic in recent weeks.

But Barkley was preferred for the Blues 3-0 win at Southampton on Sunday and he repaid the manager, scoring one and assisting another for Eden Hazard.

And Shearer has explained why he thinks the Englishman, who has been recalled into Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming internationals, is looking like a different player.

“What's always been the problem with Ross, besides having from serious injuries, is what's his best position?” he said on Match of the Day.

“Was it a holding midfield role, sitting in as the 10. The penny might have dropped with him also that he understands the game more now and what's required of him to be successful in a successful team.

“It seems to be happening but he's also playing with better players now. It's no coincidence that he's showing what people thought he had - he can pick his head up and pick a pass.

“Look at the players he's playing with. Jorginho. Look at what [N'Golo] Kante did for some of the players at Leicester. He's bound to shine now and also he looks a lot fitter now than he has done. He's 24 years of age. He should start now to understand the game more.

“It's right that he's got the England call up again. We haven't exactly been blessed in midfield with players who can get their head up and pick a pass.”

Chelsea have made an unbeaten start to the season in all competitions and sit level on 20 points with Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

With star player Hazard firing on all cylinders again, who knows what is possible for the Blues this campaign.

After the Southampton win, Barkley touched on his recent improvements.

“My fitness levels and performances are continuing to improve now and I’m in a good routine now,” he said.

“I had a lot of injuries last season but hat’s behind me now and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
