Nov 12, 2018In the short time 14-year-old Jean Hinchliffe has been on this planet, she’s already done more than most adults to prevent it from being irreparably destroyed.
Thankfully, she’s not alone.
This November, school children around the country will be taking the day (or many days) off school and heading to Parliament Houses, MP offices or anywhere they can be heard in an effort to force our politicians into taking climate change seriously. They’re calling it School Strike for Climate Change.
“We can’t sit around waiting until we’re in power because it’s gonna be too late,” Jean explains to Student Edge with urgency.
“We need to make a difference and take action as soon as we possibly can.”

“When we’re striking from school, it’s very difficult to ignore us,” Jean says.
“As young people, we can’t vote, we can’t make a difference in that sense so we’ve gotta find some other way of making a change.”

The majority of the strikes will take place on 30 November, but Jean insists the campaign won’t fizzle out after that. It’s here to stay until something changes.
“We know we’re not going to step down right after the strike,” Jean cautions.
“It’s just the beginning.”

That’s easy, Tom. The main difference between the political left and right (and the only difference that really matters), is that the left desires legalized theft (public funding). It is no surprise that ‘publically funded’ entities will support the political position that supports public funding. This includes the media, education, the poor, government workers and, increasingly, health care providers. Unfortunately, legalized theft is such an attractive way to make a living, that it is growing more acceptable on the political right as well. The military industrial complex is a good example.
Everyone feeding from the public trough will naturally support laws and politics that force producers to fill the public trough.

They are all PC ‘luvvies’ working with a variety of gays who they can’t possibly offend. The BBC is leading the charge, unquestioning allegiance to the plight of the minority, whilst utterly ignoring the opinions of the majority who pay the licence fee from which they all receive handsome returns.
Their latest drive is to promote females into prominent radio and TV jobs irrespective of their abilities, or lack thereof. DR. Who is now a woman and the two prime time radio spots, the breakfast show and the drivetime show have just been awarded to second rate female DJ’s.
Then there’s one Jeremy Vine, a keen London cyclist and prominent Radio 2 broadcaster, objecting to the term ‘drivetime show’ because he doesn’t drive. There are several million commuters every day who do drive but of course he expects everyone to dance to his tune, because he’s a member of a ‘minority’ group.
Perhaps it should be renamed to ‘The, Cycle, Train, Bus, Moped, Walk, Jog, Funny walk show’!

Don’t ya’ll be fergettin that the current crop of teachers, …. as well as the current crop of parents, ….. are the product of the 1980’s/1990’s public school system ……. and thus the reason they all are PC believers in CAGW.
Then, to take it one unnecessary step further, the parents of the 1980s/1990s school systems were products of the 1960s/1970s “education” systems. So…..When, exactly, did the vehicle drift off the road?
The ‘drift’ actually started, at least in America, with the post-WWII GI Bill putting thousands upon thousands of former GIs wandering from classroom to classroom on college campuses. Too many found life there most ‘comfy’ and stayed on in grad school and joining the good life as faculty and staff thereafter (not bothering to take part in the real world off-campus).
You pegged it. The 1970s was the beginning of super fake education.

The late 60’s.
I watched it happen. It wasn’t the WWII generation. University administrators bought the rhetoric that the Vietnam war was racist, and that they were complicit in it by being dispassionate scholars rather than speaking out and advocating for the correct politics.
Having bought the rhetoric, and feeling guilty, university administrators made amends by opening the doors to the university and bringing in political advocates as new faculty. The dispassionate approach to scholarship fell into disrepute. It all became politically correct advocacy.
Integration of high, middle, and grammar schools brought the coterie of left-oriented teachers with it. Discipline became racism. Prerequisites became colonialist barriers to inclusion. Academic standards became tools of hegemony. Social promotion became the vehicle to enforce graduation race-equity.
A big difference between left and right is that there is no political right. The “rightist” ideology is religion. In university, religion does not impact most scholarship. Under the loose oversight of religious or secular administrators, faculty were generally chosen for competence. In departments of History, Anthropology, etc., researchers could get on with their work, applying the standard, if not always the reality, of scholarly dispassion. Faculty were hired by merit.
But when the ideological left entered, all scholarship was seen as political. Leftists hired (and hire) for political purity, not for competence. Over time, with biased hiring, Humanities and soft-science faculties become overwhelmingly dominated by leftist political advocates. That condition is now the case in virtually all American universities.
Scholarship is then distorted by advocacy, and proper advocacy is all. During and after the 1970’s as that process came to dominance, was when all the “studies” departments proliferated, giving space for candid, aggressive, and unapologetic political advocates. Scholarship gave way to tendency, and erudition to mere vocabulary.
Soft-science data, always no better than equivocal, are now always tendentiously interpreted in one direction — to support leftist politics (see Critical Theory).
Hiring by political bias rather than by merit is a prescription for incompetence. The Humanities are now fully corrupted. One need only look at the general incompetence within climate science to see the camel’s nose of those politics entering academic science.
The only way to defeat the program is to remove Federal (and State) money. Public money cannot legally be used for political advocacy teaching.
Betsy DeVos, the US Sec’ty of Education, should lower the financial boom on every single university that promotes political advocacy in the classroom. No more Federal money.
University administrators would turn on a dime if the money dried up. The Feds should sue states, such as California, that use state tax money to support partisan politics. I think there would be widespread support for a program to remove tax money from politicized schools.
And the screams of the affected faculty and administrators would be music for the dancing. They’d shout about the evil government making war on freedom of speech. But they’d have that freedom.
But the reality will be they can say whatever they like, and no one will stop them.
Just no tax money income to support their partisan shouting and their political dishonesty in the classroom.
Universities are all about the money. They would return to scholarship almost over night.
All the way back to the turn of the 20th century, when the original crop of so-called progressives set up the whole compulsory education scheme.
Literacy rates in the US at the time were in the 90th percentile. Municipalities set up schools and hired teachers on their own initiative and dime. They took education, real education, seriously.
As is the usual bent of progressive programs, the public school system was a fake solution to a non-problem, pushed to further a political agenda. To decouple education from the individual family and community then hand it to the big-S State.

Thank you, …. Pat Frank, …… that was a really great commentary. And I rally liked this statement, to wit:
“YUP”, and to accomplish that feat and also to offer proof that the children/students were being educated, …… they changed the “test scores” from being “percentage” based to being “percentile” based, ….. thus a student who only gets 30 percent of the test questions correct …… can be given a 97 percentile grade.
And an obvious fact that most avert their eyes and their mind to because of their own miseducation, to wit:
The entire Public School System is fully corrupted, including State Agencies and all County employees from Administrators to the janitors.
Pat Frank, it is far, far too late to think about doing that, simply because it is an impossible task to even think about re-nurturing (re-educating) 3 to 4 generations of the American populace.
Personally, I don’t think its even possible to install a new curriculum in the Elementary Schools because you don’t have trained teachers to teach it.

Teachers were changing test answers to improve scores. The whole system was corrupt to the core, all enforced by Beverly L. Hall, the Atlanta Superintendent of Public Education. She did it, in part, to make her career look good and for large $ bonuses. Unfortunately, she died before she could be brought to trial.
The Atlanta Constitution newspaper uncovered evidence that the problem of cheating teachers and false test scores extends across the entire US. See their evidence of cheating map here (1.4 MB pdf).
It’s incredible that this could go on, or that teachers could willingly participate is such a profound betrayal of their professional ethics, not to say their students.
All testimony to the power of self-righteous political smugery to induce a level of delusion that almost requires a diagnosis of insanity.

Bearing in mind the ‘Public’ school system in the UK includes places like Fettes and Eton. Anyone can attend as long as they can pay. So the well heeled can send their children there irrespective of their ethnicity, upbringing, background, colour, religion, country of residence etc. Ideal places for liberalism to flourish one might imagine, but they produce largely right wing thinkers. Which either means there was a mutual hatred amongst all pupils because of physical and cultural differences, or the left is lying to us and these places actually produce well rounded fair people who are happy to live and let live.
What is considered a ‘Public’ school in the US equates to our Grammar and Comprehensive schools here, publicly funded schools. I won’t go into the differences, far too boring.
But in essence, I think you’re correct in that the bedrock of our current education system now are the pupils who came from 80’s & 90’s publicly funded schools and who are now teachers. In the UK they are invariably left wing because they are a product of the public system, they are now wholly invested in it because it provides them a living, and they largely believe that’s the way forward for society as a whole.
They were educated in Universities that were/are a product of Tony Blair’s ‘education, education, education’ system where numerous Technical Colleges were elevated to the status of Universities so any number of wacko subject could be accorded degree’s.
Many of these students didn’t/don’t have the ability to critically think their way out a wet paper bag so were ideal targets for the pseudo intellectual left wingers promoting their idealistic principles of universal equality and fairness for everyone.
Instead of leaving an educational environment and discovering that’s not how the world works, they followed through by continuing with, and perpetuating their wrong headed, ill considered, idealistic principles by remaining in the education system.
Now the concepts of ‘hate speech’ and ‘safe places’ for students (amongst others) are promoted to further isolate students from the realities of life and these concepts are now spreading further into politics and society.
But seek out Jordan B Peterson’s perception of regulating ‘hate speech’, in his opinion the cure is worse than the disease. As he says, the people you would least trust to define the term ‘hate’ are the very people who shout loudest about it and are therefore appointed to regulate it, without definition. As has been repeated many times on WUWT, the ones complaining about rising atmospheric CO2 are the last ones who would abandon their comfortable way of life with cars, trains, central heating and iPhones. Jordan Peterson pointed this out in his appearance at the Cambridge Students Union (not the one above which is at Oxford).
Also interesting to note that his appearance at Oxford where he didn’t discuss climate change had some 1.5M views on You Tube.
His Cambridge appearance where he described solving climate change as “low resolution thinking” had about 3M views.
We constantly labour under the misapprehension (well, we don’t, but the alarmists do and constantly shove it down our throat) that AGW is a majority supported hypothesis when, in fact, I suspect nothing could be further from the truth. I’m pretty confident there weren’t 1.5M alarmists viewing You Tube to watch their pet theory ripped to shreds by one of the worlds acknowledged greatest thinkers.
It was a sunny spring day in 1970 that my entire middle school in our upper middle class suburb of San Francisco walked out of class and “marched” through the downtown to celebrate(?) … protest(?) … the very first ‘Earth Day’. The teachers and administration organized the whole affair. Yes, of course, there were flaming rivers in Ohio … choking smog in LA, and a host of REAL environmental concerns to be addressed … however, all I cared about was an afternoon off school and seeing the short-shorts walking.
Our school walkout was justified as being ‘educational’ … teaching us 12yo’s about such topics as ‘direct action’, ‘the power of protest’, and … the 1st Amendment. When in fact, it was simple brainwashing of impressionable young minds by radicalized teachers and their UNIONS.

Dear god! I can’t recall anyone in my school just north of Glasgow, Scotland even discussing the environment never mind demonstrating over it in 1970. We are of identical vintage.
Indeed, a few years later, around 1980 when I was working, the concept of global cooling was doing the rounds in the media. That was the first time I even considered the environment and as far as I was concerned it meant more ice skating on our local Loch, skiing on the Campsie Hills nearby and white Christmases.
I have yet to see a white Christmas in the UK. I missed out in Scotland in 2009/2010 when the country was under a blanket of snow for almost 6 months as I now live in SE England.
I didn’t start taking climate change seriously until I watched Gores movie and fell for it hook, line and sinker. Then just a few years ago, goodness knows why, I decided I wanted to see the empirically derived evidence that atmospheric CO2 causes the planet to warm.
I’m still looking.

Sadly, I don’t enjoy football. I’m a Rugby man, have been since I first saw a school game played, about 1964 when I was 7 years old or so and said to myself “that’s the game for me”!
Parts of SE England are nice but the traffic is horrendous. So much so that I’ll be retiring back up to Scotland in about 4 years time so if you want that pint down here, best be quick. You probably remember a program called “7-Up” (or something similar) that followed a group of kids from various social backgrounds over their lifetimes to offer insight into the effects of socail class on eventual success in life. Initially, the kids were interviewed at 7 years old, then 14, then 21 and I think lastly at 28 years old. It was a fascinating program.

The teachers that feed them this cr@p are culpable here. My daughter is readiong Lord of the Flies, a classic book, used in schools for decades to teach English. There is, believe it or not, today, and environmental and climate change lesson to be learnt.
The funny thing is that when Jack tells the boys about the beast from the sea, and convinces them that he and his militaristic hunters are their saviours, the solution, they actually are using the same method as the UN to gain power. Sell a scare story and yourself as the solution. Used by dictators throughout history.
I told my daughter this. Hopefully she will raise it at school.
Brains are not fully developed until mid-late 20’s. Catch them before then and you win. This is global, orchestrated and has been planned for generations. A bit late now to stem the tide; but you can always try.
Build a solid ship of good sense for your kids to ride it out on. Once the waters recede, they’ll be in the best position to help rebuild the world. For this is the way of human history–a long winding chain of Big Kids, the Big Messes they make, and the longsuffering adults who clean them up.
I blame not only their parents, but also many teachers. These kids have been brainwashed into believing whatever their teachers have said on this subject. I hope it comes back to bite them (the teachers) one day. The kids are throwing away their futures for an untrue unproven theory.

There is a reason why 14 year olds don’t have the vote, it is because they are too easily influenced and they make irrational decisions, this is one of those irrational decisions, they have been brainwashed by their schools, the left wing media and their teachers.
In some locations, 16 year olds ARE getting to the vote.

As an ex-teacher in NSW, I can tell you that by the end of November, yearly exams are done and finished, and you are often starting on next year’s work for the capable students, and child-minding the not-so-capable.
Teachers would love to get rid of these wastrels for a while, just to get some peace and quiet.

I wrote to the Queensland Labor government complaining about Al Gore’s climate fiction movie being shown in schools. I sent them an article by Christopher Monckton detailing 35 errors in that movie and that the High Court in the UK had found it to be political indoctrination. The government advised me to contact the school my grandchildren went to and put my case to them.
Or pressure them to also show “Die Welle (2008)” with English subtitles as mandatory movie. Aussie teenagers still can read English, I hope? If not, the old Hollywood version, “The Wave (1981)”.
Afterwards, they can write an essay about the commonalities between ‘The Wave’ and PC culture.

But who will lead Australia when China or India or even Indonesia decides to divvy up the huge wealth of Australia in the future?
It is not clear just who would rise to the occasion, in the self-enslaving, magical thinking, self loathing irrational culture apparently taking over Australia.

I believe marking in the UK is now done offshore in some cases. Teachers aren’t even trusted to assess their own pupils.
Nor is education everything. Many of our nations successful entrepreneurs are ill educated. Richard Branson is dyslexic so struggled at school as it was undiagnosed; Alan Sugar started business life selling car aerials in a market stall as a kid; Graham Kirkham, the founder of the DFS furniture empire; John Caudwell, the mobile phone boss who gave up on A-levels and founded Phones4U (sold and now no longer operating); and someone who fascinates me, Simon Dolan who left school with, from memory, a single GCSE. He was unemployed at 23 and living off credit cards before spending his last £10 placing an advert to complete peoples tax returns.

When I was 14, I went surfing instead of going to school. Now that, I could understand.
As long as they are committed to believing that all of modernity is due to most people being “victimized” in some (however small) way, then they (leftists) will always have an axe to grind, and always a reason to protest, and make trouble.
Blame these, blame those. It doesnt work! Ihad 6 kids and added two nieces that weren’t being looked after for a few years. I was strongly involved in their education including removing them from one particularly bad school. I put three of them in a no nonsense old Catholic school in the city (they weren’t Catholics so I had to convince the principal). One, who wanted to drop out, I put in a private school (older siblings were a lot tougher) this one is now a physics prof. Expenses for all of this (add music, ballet, martial arts, hockey,figure skating and horseback riding- we had a farm) were enormous. They were smart kids and I taught them a better grade of math, argued points with them from the stuff they were being taught, introduced them to classic literature, chess (l actually wasn’t that good at it myself) ingrained in them to think for themselves and a heck of a lot more. They arent part of the polcor brigade.

This might be an interesting homework assignment for these budding idealists: from the end of school on Friday to the start of school on Monday, each student will not use any item associated with fossil fuel. This will include food (which was transported to the store by truck), transport (they walk home on Friday, then walk to school on Monday) and do not use electricity (no refrigerated products, microwave, electric/gas appliances & lights, cell phones or TV). An essay on that experience to be handed in on Wednesday morning.
They are children. Irresponsible, immature, naive children. Take away their video games and cell phones until they do what they are told and return to school. The rest of us can, and should, ignore them.

I was referring to the striking children. Who is most proximate to the activating of their minds towards striking? Who made the suggestion? Was it suggested to one student who relayed the suggestion, or was a meeting called to indoctrinate a group of students to start such striking behavior?
We’re raising a generation of activists that can’t separate social awareness from politics. Very dangerous.
Not at all there is arguably as many being raised on the right and it just makes noise. The only real danger is it getting so bad one group deciding to put the others against the wall as sometimes has happened in history.
I am old enough to remember my classes praying every morning in public school. I remember the Supreme Court decision that was used as an excuse to get rid of that practice.
I remember seeing (in public school) misbehaving classmates get “swats” in front of the class. That was a time when the child who was punished also got punished at home as well. Parents supported the teachers’ and administrators’ efforts to keep discipline in the classroom. I didn’t see firsthand the reversal of that behavior. I did hear, after graduating high school, that they had removed the stall doors in the students’ bathrooms because smoking and worse were happening behind closed doors.
I remember a healthy culture of competition in my schools. There was only one valedictorian and one salutatorian in each graduating class.
I graduated a year early due to my family’s intent to move sometime during my junior year. I didn’t want to take my senior year in a strange school, and I had taken a class the previous summer just so I would have something to do with my time, so it turned out that I had enough credits to graduate as a junior. I graduated when I was 16. I was eager to move away from home and do “real stuff”…even though it was in college. 😉
When I was a freshman in college, a friend and I went to another college town where there was a much larger library on campus. I didn’t find what I was looking for at the library, but my friend and I stopped by a record shop in that town. While I was there, I saw a classmate that I didn’t realize had also graduated a year early. When I hailed her by name, she turned glazed eyes in my direction and said “Hi” in an obvious drug-induced stupor. She didn’t really seem to recognize me, even though we had had many classes together in high school and junior high.
I was shocked to see what had become of her. I would have sworn that she would have come out as valedictorian or salutatorian when she graduated. Now I have no idea what happened to her. She was not only intelligent, but also good looking and popular. She had a lot going for her. What a waste of a young, promising life…just at the point where women were starting to make inroads into non-traditional professions.
Since that time, I have wondered if the Powers That Be didn’t allow the drug culture to have free run because they knew it would remove many promising young people from the competition they planned for their own kids to win.
I can’t help but believe today’s online culture has been tailored to do the same thing to young, promising lives.
These days, when college students will gather to watch one of their peers struggle to figure out how to use a manual can opener for 10 minutes (or more), and then give her a standing ovation when she finally figures it out–I just shake my head.
I understand that TPTB will refuse to turn away from 24/7/365 online connectivity because it means better surveillance of the proletariat (does anyone use that word anymore?), but I think the real revolution needs to be away from trying to automate everything….

Obviously, school isn’t very important. The adults who are organizing the children think politics is way more important. This is a political stunt, the children are props. The children will repeat what they are told to repeat. Imagine the peer pressure. It isn’t science class, its religion.

When I was younger than these students, 8 and less, I was studying this planet, the sun and others in our solar system not worrying about what might be happening to global climate (It was called weather then). That was nearly 50 years ago. We were told the climate was to changed to an ice age and then we were told to a hot house, where humans were in perpetual war over resources, not being able to feed ourselves by about year 2000. 40 years to year 2000, the climate and planet are fine. Nearly 20 years after year 2000, the climate and planet are fine.
I look out the window and go outside and all is fine with the world. There are people trying to wreck that. These students need to get out more and away from “social media” and their smart devices.

The other thing that narks me about this neo-millennial entitled attitude is the utter selfish arrogance of it all.
The claim is ‘we are the future and WE need action to protect our future before OLD PEOPLE destroy it.’
Well lets look at that for a bit. I am currently 40 something and this selfish entitled sprog is about 30 years younger than me. Assuming we both live to 100 our lives will overlap for 70 years. Now if we ignore her younger years and place her ‘we are the future’ ego trip as started about now, then for 55 or so of those 70 years she expects to be in charge because people like me, despite the fact we also will be living in exactly the same environment, are too stupid to know what a real environment is and are actively hoping to roll around in sun bleached slag heaps the rest of our lives.
Jean and her little friends are selfish entitled control freaks and quite frankly she should start learning from people with actual life experiences behind them or get use to a low wage career in hospitality.

I don’t get it. Here we have Australia’s politicians doing their very best to bankrupt the country by attempting to rely on windmills and industrial solar to supply their electrical power and some Australian school kids think their politicians are not going down the road to ruin fast enough!
I wonder if anyone ever told the kids or the politicians that their complete curtailing of fossil fuel burning in Australia won’t make a bit of difference in the greater scheme of things.
China and India will offset any Australian CO2 reductions in a matter of weeks or months with increased CO2 output, and China and India can increase their output as much as they desire from now until the year 2030.
Australia’s efforts to reduce CO2 are a very damaging waste of time. Someone ought to clue the school kids and the politicians in before they really screw things up.
