Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asked ISRO scientists not to get disheartened by the hurdles in the moon mission Chandrayaan 2 and asserted that there will be a “new dawn and better tomorrow“.
The nation was proud of them and stood with them, he said.
“We came very close but we need to cover more ground in the times to come. Learning from today will make us stronger and better. The nation is proud of our space programme and scientists. The best is yet to come in our space programme. There are new frontiers to discover and new places to go. India is with you,” Mr. Modi said. “Effort was worth it and so was the journey. It will make us stronger and better. There will be a new dawn and better tomorrow... I am with you, nation is with you,” he added.
Country stands by ISRO: Congress
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hailed ISRO scientists for their “incredible work” on the mission, saying it had laid the foundation for many more “pathbreaking and ambitious” space missions.
“Congratulations to the team at #ISRO for their incredible work on the Chandrayaan 2 Moon Mission. Your passion & dedication is an inspiration to every Indian. Your work is not in vain. It has laid the foundation for many more path breaking & ambitious Indian space missions,” Mr. Gandhi tweeted.
Hopes of 1.3 billion Indians not lost: Vice President
There was nothing to despair, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said on Saturday as ISRO lost contact with its moon lander.
“There is nothing to despair. ISRO only lost communication with the Lander & not the hopes of 1.3 billion Indians,” Mr. Naidu’s secretariat tweeted. “I salute @isro scientists, engineers & everyone else associated with Chandrayaan-2 for their hard work & dedication in trying to conquer new frontiers in space exploration,” he said.
Home Minister and BJP president Amit Shah said ISRO’s achievement with getting Chandrayaan 2 so far had made every Indian proud.
“India stands with our committed and hard working scientists at @isro. My best wishes for future endeavours,” he tweeted.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged scientists not to lose heart.
“We are proud of our scientists. They have created history. No need to lose heart. Our scientists have done a great job. Jai Hind!”
CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury expressed confidence that the next steps will “more satisfying“.
“The history of our scientific milestones has shown us how the fight and struggle has been continuous. Bravo that ISRO and our scientists got us so far,” he tweeted.
Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani said the journey of Chandrayaan 2 so far and what lay ahead was no less than an achievement.
“We are proud of our scientists and confident that India’s space programme only gets stronger & better from here. Team @isro - a proud, grateful & an inspired nation stands with you!” she tweeted.
Nation proud of ISRO scientists: Goa CM
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday said the entire nation stood behind the ISRO scientists. “#Chandryaan2 may have faced some challenges, but the entire nation is proud of our team of scientists at @isro who are among few special ones in the world possess the expertise and capabilities to undertake space missions of such great magnitude,” the chief minister tweeted.
“The orbiter continues on its journey to explore moon and take the mission ahead,” he added.
Mission unprecedented; Raghubar Das
“Chandrayaan Mission was very inspirational and unprecedented even though ups and downs are part of our lives,” Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das said.
“ISRO has given an opportunity to the country to celebrate and would be successful in its mission,” Mr. Das said and wished good luck to the scientists.
Mission’s 95 per cent objective achieved
Former ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said on Saturday the Chandrayaan-2 has achieved 95 per cent of its mission objectives, the lander’s unsuccessful bid to touch-down on the Lunar surface notwithstanding.
“I think we need not worry too much...I will rate more than 95 per cent of the mission objectives have been achieved,” Mr. Nair said after lander ‘Vikram’ lost contact with ground-stations during final descent to the Lunar surface in the early hours of Saturday.
“Already, orbiter is in space and it should do an excellent job of mapping”, he added.
Kerala CM hails ISRO scientists’ dedication
In a Facebook post, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the dedication of the ISRO scientists was “commendable“.
“They can overcome the present hurdles... Best wishes to them to move forward with confidence and reach further heights,” the CM added.
Encouragement, support flood twitter
“Lost Communication but not hope. We are proud of you ISRO.. #Chandrayaan2,” actor-turned-politician Sunny Deol tweeted.
Chandrayaan-2, which took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on July 22, would have been the first to land on the moon’s southern pole.
“My dear Hard-working & INSPIRATIONAL scientists of @isro, just remember that, in the field of science: ‘THERE’S NO LOSING. THERE’S WINNING. & THEN THERE’S LEARNING.’ I’m sure you would’ve learnt quite a lot during #Chandrayaan2, which will definitely help us in future missions,” a tweet read.
The hashtag Chandrayaan2 was trending ahead of the landing of the Vikram module, however, over 87,000 tweets were being sent after the news broke out.
Other hashtags for K Sivan, VikramLander, ISRO, MoonMission, IndiaOnTheMoon and ProudOfIsro reflected the collective sentiment of Indian twitterati.
Ashish Sharma tweeted, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts, we just lost the communication not the hope.”
Venture capitalist Rajeev Mantri wrote on the social media site that people’s response to the mission will “do a world of good“.
“I’m confident @isro will eventually succeed with #Chandrayaan2. More broadly, people’s response starting with @narendramodi’s urging to “move forward”, will do a world of good. Many children were watching. The message goes out: failure is an event, not a person,” he wrote.
Film industry hails ISRO team
Prominent actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Kamal Hassan, offered words of encouragement to ISRO scientists and hailed them for the mission.
“Sometimes we don’t land or arrive at the destination we want to. The important thing is we took off and had the Hope and Belief we can. Our current situation is never and not our final destination. That always comes in time and belief! Proud of #ISRO” Shah Rukh tweeted.
The 1,471-kg lander of Chandrayaan-2 -- first Indian mission to explore the lunar terrain with home-grown technology -- is named Vikram after Dr Vikram A Sarabhai, the father of the Indian space programme.
The lander was designed to execute a soft landing on the lunar surface, and to function for one lunar day, which is equivalent to about 14 earth days.
“Pride never did face defeat... Our pride , Our victory... Proud of you ISRO,” tweeted Amitabh.
Mr. Hassan said Chandrayaan 2 mission does not “tantamount to failure” and added that country will soon succeed in its endeavours to reach Moon.
“In Research and Development, there will be a learning curve. This is that precious learning moment. We will soon be on the Moon, Thanks to #ISRO. The Nation believes and applauds ISRO,” he posted.
Akshay Kumar said that in science, success is not always guaranteed but one should keep moving ahead.
“There’s no science without experiment... Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we learn. Salute to the brilliant minds of @isro, we are proud and confident #Chandrayaan2 will make way for #Chandrayaan3 soon. We will rise again,” he tweeted.
Filmmaker Karan Johar said, “Salute and applaud the incredible endeavours of @isro !!!! So proud of everything they continue to do... So proud to be part of a nation that has the most genius minds...”
Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar tweeted, “Only the connection is broken, not the resolve, the courage is still high. I am sure that we will surely get success. @isro We are proud of our scientists. Just move on ”
Actor Taapsee Pannu hailed the ISRO team as the country’s “hero“.
“Lump in the throat, tear in the eye not coz of anything else but witnessing how beautifully you got the entire nation together in hope and spirit... it’s ok to take a few steps back when u know you are about to make your longest jump. You are our hero @isro” she posted.
Actors Farhan Akhtar, Anupam Kher and Paresh Rawal also lauded the ISRO for its efforts while complimenting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for boosting the morale of the scientists.
“Success and will come and go but the determination to succeed will forever remain constant. Proud of you @isro and deeply touched by this consolatory gesture from PM @narendramodi ... Jai Hind,” tweeted Farhan.
Paresh said, “The compassionate and assuring and encouraging fatherly hug to ISRO scientists is etched forever on the heart and mind of India. Thanks narendramodi ji for making us feel safe.”
Anupam hailed PM Modi’s speech as one of the most “inspirational speeches ever“.
“Your affectionate and emotional hug to #Isro Chief K Sivan is a visual that will be etched in every Indian’s memory for years. You make us feel protected. Thank you,” he wrote on Twitter.

Telugu actor Sudheer Babu tweeted applauding the country’s “brave attempt“.
“Proud of @isro... South polar region of moon is unexplored for all the risky reasons involved. India’s brave attempt not only will guide our future space programs, but also the other space powers. Experiment is the fundamental step of science,” he said.
