Of these, 86 percent were marketed for better sex or weight loss. The review, which was conducted with Food and Drug Administration data from 2007 to 2016, found that the government had recalled only 48 percent of the offending supplements, which are not regulated as strongly as traditional drugs. A study in 2015 found that supplements are tied to 23,000 emergency room visits per year, according to Scientific American.
