Only authoritarian rule can deliver Net Zero, Lord Deben admits

At a green investment event last week, Lord Deben praised the government’s climate policy objectives but referred to the delivery process as “crap” and demanded the creation of a new “powerful body” to force the private sector to act on policy. (Utility Week, 29 March 2021.)

Lord Deben said:

I want to see a delivery system either within or outside the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). We need somebody doing the delivery direction […] You need to have a very clear and powerful body saying what has to happen, these are the priorities and get on with it. Unless we have that this whole thing will be policy strong, policy powerful and policy rich but delivery poor.”

Lord Deben’s remarks are a clear admission that in spite of a vast web of subsidies and regulations forcing businesses and even the military towards low carbon technologies, these technologies and policies are so lacking in real attraction that progress towards Net Zero is faltering.

A BBC survey published on Monday revealed that the vast majority of people in Scotland are not adopting low-carbon technologies and options because they “are financially out of reach for most Scots.”

Lord Deben’s answer to the public reluctance to embrace costly behaviour changes and green technologies is authoritarian and undemocratic: “You need to have a very clear and powerful body saying what has to happen”. Critics might reply that the United Kingdom already has such a body in the democratically accountable Parliament, and that Lord Deben’s demands are an attempt to circumvent that accountability.

GWPF director Benny Peiser, said:

Lord Deben’s suggestion that Parliament should be bypassed by an all-powerful Committee of Climate Safety is repulsively anti-democratic and also an admission of policy failure.”

Deben’s authoritarian proposal confirms the recent warning by Deutsche Bank that Net Zero policies threaten to result in a “noticeable loss of welfare and jobs” and are unlikely to succeed without “a certain degree of eco-dictatorship.”

It has long been evident that the policies involved in Net Zero will be hugely expensive and will be extremely unpopular once the public find out the hard way. That is why successive governments and Parliaments as a whole have kept on kicking the can down the road.

Hence Gummer’s enthusiasm for circumventing democracy.

It is no coincidence that the US is moving in the same authoritarian direction, as Marc Morano outlines in his new book, with Biden eager to use decrees and regulation to force through his policies rather than allowing Congress oversight.

Only authoritarian rule can deliver net zero but neither authoritarian rule nor net zero can deliver climate action.

We already have an authoritarian government in Scotland. Nicola Sturgeon recently stated that “Power comes from people, not from politicians. The will of the people in any country has to prevail.” but she was talking about independence from Westminster, not the will of the people against Holyrood.
When it comes to renewables the people in Scotland no longer have any power as the wishes of communities and decisions of local councils are regularly over-ruled following public inquiry. It is automatic now for protest groups to start preparing for appeal when the council refuses a windfarm application. Developers can appeal refusal, objectors cannot appeal consent except via expensive Judicial Review.
Our government will not be satisfied until this once beautiful country is covered in turbines even though so many are producing electricity that is too far from populations and are paid millions in constraints.
    This is dictatorship, not democracy.

Doesn’t Sturgeon want to be ‘independent’ within the EU? 🙂

And they, the EU, are Climate Change fanatics. Germany, the power house of the EU, is the worst affected, with Nuclear, as well as Gas and ‘Coal’, aka Lignite, officially being phased out.

Brenda and Robert, if you have access to the Sunday Telegraph you may enjoy a humourous piece by Julie Birchall on page 20 (2 days ago) entitled ” What did the Scots do to deserve Sturgeon and Salmond?”

The man’s an idiot! Authoritarian government expensive, intermittent energy causing poverty and misery. The real reason behind this fiction, universal Socialism?

They have done it with lockdowns and vaccines, what is to stop them doing it for the ‘climate emergency’. I mean if they can ‘get away with it’ ( to quote Ferguson) for a disease with an IFR of 0.15% (Ioannidis’ latest calculation) , then they can for something which is ‘so much more dangerous’.
We have a very small window left to stop the totalitarian regimes to become a total reality, but its closing fast.

“Lord Deben’s suggestion that Parliament should be bypassed by an all-powerful Committee of Climate Safety is …” already in place.

How else did we manage to get the 2008 Climate Change Act and NET Zero Emissions hoisted upon us?

Why are school children being taught Climate Change, when they should be learning about some Science and the Real World?

Yes, Parliament hasn’t been bypassed, but it has been replaced by ‘STEM-knowledge deficient’ Establishment aspiring, foreign-friendly puppets that can’t see beyond the end of today, and don’t care about other people’s future.

    It’s a case of don’t Invade, Infiltrate!

On no account purchase any machinery or plan any Engineering project that can feed into a more experienced and skilled indigenous population: instead, just demand instant gratification, and buy it off the shelf, from abroad, and leave the uninspired school leavers to fight over jobs in coffee bars.

I have a feeling that you would not support my “Selwyn Gummer for President of the UK” campaign during COP 26.

So if we voted for it and we want it why will we need to be forced to do it?

And if we don’t want it why will we be forced to do it?

Does this remind anyone of Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety in Revolutionary France? That ended well. Not least for Robespierre, who also lost his head in all the excitement. I suspect a metaphorically similar reckoning for the Gummers of this world will be on the cards when the great unwashed wake up and start sharpening their pitchforks. Covid lockdowns have inspired these loonies to ever greater controls but once you start taking cars and heating off of people and telling them what they can and can’t eat, a pushback is inevitable. It’s a shame no major U.K. politician has realised that yet.

Bit of a blow for the old boy, Lord Deben I mean. Self esteem and own finances will have to come to terms with the difficulty of establishing an authoritarian regime.

    • March 30, 2021 3:24 pm

No, it’s quite easy for Gummer/Deben – he’ll just force his daughter to comply and then he doesn’t have to do anything.

There is nothing that can deliver zero carbon emissions, never mind NET-zero. And certainly not by 2050. The long-distance transportation and delivery of the goods and services that even a few Authoritarians need cannot be stopped. This is little more than accelerated scare-mongering. Chicken-little Eco-dictators avoiding beef in their diets?

Dobbin should never have been allowed to be an MP, he was head of a global organisation whose stated objective was to get their people into positions of power and then push for action on climate change and sustainability. Didn’t he do well!

We must realise the Green, – “Climate Change/Save-the-Planet” Religion controlling of behavioural and thought processes. is simply the Trojan Horse successfully enabling international acceptance for Totalitarian Communism. Communists know full well how unpopular their real aim is, so through deception they hope that people unaware of who their enemy is, they will succumb at every attempt to resist them.
