LAST week we mentioned some of the stories behind the war dead from Weymouth who were killed on the battlefields of the Great War.
We focused on the poignant tale of Edward Betts, the grandfather of John Dering.
Tragic Private Betts was a schoolteacher who was only serving because he volunteered to take the place of another teacher who had heavier responsibilities.
Private Edward Betts was in 2/4 Dorsetshire Regt and was a dispatch rider on a motorbike. He was killed aged 39 on November 22 1917.
Friend of Looking Back, Greg Schofield, very kindly sent us some pictures of Edward Betts.
Greg said: "According to his grandson, because he was older than most of the others, he was given that as being less demanding."
