The French team had won the doubles rubber to give themselves a chance of a stunning comeback but that was sniffed out by Cilic who did not yield any breakpoint to Pouille in a dominant performance.
Croatia’s sports-loving president, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic famously known for her appearances at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, was in attendance to savour her nation’s landmark title.
It is Croatia’s second Davis Cup title and will be the last in the traditional format of the 118-year old competition as it gets a major revamp next season.
