Inter Milan women secure promotion to Serie A

Nerazzure top Arezzo 6-0 to push win streak to 17.

Braces from Gloria Marinelli and Alessia Rognoni earned the Inter Milan women a 6-0 win over Arezzo Sunday and, more importantly, promotion next season to Serie A.

Inter Milan has won 17 out of 17 to start their campaign and, with five matches remaining on the schedule, have enough points to move to the top flight.

”It’s a great feeling, the girls and the Club deserve this happiness,” said Inter coach Sebastian De La Fuente. “It’s an honor to be able to celebrate it with these colors.”

Interestingly enough, the Nerazzurre failed to score in the first half, despite attempts from Beatrice Merlo. Arezzo also missed an opportunity to score in the 22nd minute, leaving the teams tied 0-0 at halftime.

In the second half, however, Inter exploded.

Merlo put Inter on the scoreboard first in the 48th minute after driving home a corner kick from Silvia Pisano.

Eight minutes later, Marta Pandini doubled the lead.

Marinelli picked up her 19th and 20th goals of the season in five minutes – in the 60th and 65th minutes.

”I’m really happy with this result. There was some tension, but then everything changed for the better,” Marinelli said, following the match. “It’s a brilliant feeling, we’ve won every game, and we don’t want to stop. We’ve improved so much since August, especially as a team.”

Finally, Rognoni tallied her brace with goals in the 91st and 93rd minutes to push Inter to the win.

“In the first half, we were a bit nervous, but then we broke the deadlock in the second half and won deservedly,” De La Fuente said. “Ours is a united group, and we’ve shown it in every stage of this wonderful process. Now, we’ll try to win every game.”

This is the first season for the Inter Milan women’s team to compete in FIGC.
