It was seven months ago that Beau Allen was riding a double-decker bus down Broad Street, decked out in an American flag button down flannel and yellow-ish leather gloves with tassels.

Now he’s helping his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, prepare for the Super Bowl champions in a week two matchup of 1-0 teams.

How can Allen use his inside knowledge against the Eagles?

“I think just doing some scouting, telling different players what to expect,” the defensive tackle told reporters Wednesday. “But I think other than individual matchups, just talking about the philosophy of the offense, philosophy of the defense. It’s a team that plays with a lot of energy and a lot of confidence, and I think after last week we’re a team that plays with a lot of energy and confidence as well. So it’s gonna be a fun matchup for us, especially at home. First home game, that’s exciting.”

Vinny Curry is in the same position as Allen, moving from Philly to Tampa this offseason as part of the inevitable salary cap and personnel restructuring.

“You’ve got to stop the run and match their intensity,” Curry said. “Because they play with a lot of emotion. They play fast.”

Curry said he’s trying not to answer the phone this week. He doesn’t want any distractions. And he estimates that he and Allen might be part of Doug Pederson’s offensive game plan:

“I’m pretty sure they’re going to switch some things up,” said Curry. “I’m pretty sure they’re going to try to attack me and attack Beau in some type of way because you’ve been there for so many years and your whole career, so they know your tendencies as well – just as much as you know theirs. At the end of the day, it’s their whole offense. Not just one player. At the end of the day, you can’t get outside yourself – {Defensive coordinator Mike} Smith has a great game plan and today we’re just going to work on it.”

Allen played 31 snaps in the week one win, which was about 48% of the game. Curry logged 48 snaps and played 75% of the available reps. Beau didn’t register on the stat sheet but Vinny had one tackle, a pair of QB hits, and this third down sack:

Last season, Allen and Curry came in and out of the lineup as part of the heavy rotations on the Birds’ defensive line. Curry started at one d-end position and played about 55% of the season snaps, giving way to Chris Long and others on obvious passing downs when the Eagles would stack a couple of rushers and push vertically. Allen only played about 70 fewer snaps than Tim Jernigan and asserted himself as the third defensive tackle while contributing on special teams as well.

Together they complete a defensive line that includes six-time Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy and ex-Giant Jason Pierre-Paul. First round draft pick Vita Vea is injured and remains on the shelf. Top cornerback Vernon Hargreaves is out for the season and veteran Brent Grimes is coming back from a groin injury. Depending on his status, we might be looking at rookie Carlton Davis and third-year guy Ryan Smith playing corner this weekend.

That’s a boon for the Eagles, who didn’t look very smooth on offense last week. Tampa gave up 40 points to New Orleans in week one and has some significant holes to fill.

For what it’s worth, head coach Dirk Koetter says some of the professionalism and attitude of the Eagles has bled into his team via the acquisition of Curry and Allen.

“Those two could not be better team-first guys,” Koetter told Eagles media on a Wednesday conference call. “Part of that whole deal of us having a good training camp and practicing harder are because of guys like Vinny and Beau setting the tempo every day. They come to work every day and are serious about football. They’re just great guys. They’re the kind of guys you’d like to go have a beer with.”

For former teammates, maybe that beer happens sometime down the road, but not this week:
