Desmond Elliot calls for ban of Foreign movies in Nigeria (Video)

Nollywood actor cum politician, Desmond Elliot has called for the ban of foreign movies in Nigeria to enable the growth of the Nigerian Movie Industry.

The 45-year-old representing Surulere constituency at the Lagos State house of assembly  said this in an interview with HIPTV, as he spoke on the current situation of the country's Movie Industry.

According to him, the Federal Government should make it difficult for foreign content to come into the country so that local content from Nigeria can grow.

Watch the video below.

I did not spending more than 3k last week Friday@Cinema... Just to watch the lion King.. It really worth my money.. Everything about the animation is real.. And not Nollywood.. That their animals are always flying.. Der leg can't even be on the ground ND also hungry looking.. Nollywood should stop the blame game and reform its industry.. Like our music industry is going globally and we are not complaining because our music industry is really good .. But for Nollywood I can't spend my money to watch that trash.. All thanks to Ebonytv, Iroko, LITV.. I can manage their movies... They are really trying to remove Nigeria from trash about our kwekekweke Nollywood movies. #kachi

This one nor get sense! It is like banning international trade or taking the entertainment industry another 50 years backward. You think revenue from the entertainment industry comes just from local consumption alone? You think countries whose movies you ban would just fold their arms and watch, abi? Okay! Ask UK and Iran. By the way, who even still watches Nollywood? I have not watched those silly movies in more than 5 years. See the kind of people you all vote as your representatives?

Story!!! Did any country ban Nigeria movie even When some producers produce substandard movie? yet you want foreign films to be ban. Fight piracy not ban on foreign films. I know quite well that you are one of the film producers in Nigeria please call all your fellow producer to order. They better sit up and start producing good , quality and standard film that will compite with foreign films. You can't subject Nigerians to watch rubbish with their own money because you are now a law maker go to the drawing board and produce something better. I know my Nigerian people, we fit no get money but we sabi better thing. Please honorable fight the criminals that pirate films in Nigeria not people that are patronizing you.

I think not. Have we not seen successful Nigerian movies? Nigerians have their own stories to tell but if you leave them they will just sit down and remain comfortable telling the same old stories because they know we have no choice. It's not everytime prayer warrior and pastor going to village to defeat the evil babalawo. What of historical movies (pre/post independence not village movie everytime) , movies about the old gods (there's a lot untapped potential there especially the Yoruba pantheon), movies about the Nigerian experience in general. The fact is Nigerians will ultimately see movies they can relate to and no one knows more about being Nigerian than a Nigerian. I know it's not easy but banning foreign movies will just increase black market demand. How would one even go about a ban? The internet exists you know.

Much respect to you Desmond but this isn’t a well thought out proposition, the Nigerian movie industry is not in any way in direct competition with Hollywood,Bollywood,e.t.c. The Nigerian movie industry has grown immensely over the years even with foreign movie presence, people should have the freedom to chose what they want. What will really make nollywood more attractive is better scripts, better plots, better directing and most importantly better acting. Enough of the “my mama no like my wife” and “this one don jazz that one” movies. We have no real action movies, no real thrillers, no psychological thrillers,no real romance movies, just movies depicting mundane Nigerian drama. If you want Nollywood to thrive, banning foreign movies won’t achieve anything, it will simply make the hustlers start churning out even more lackluster content for profit, leaving us with an even worse movie industry.

I think Hon Elliot's call is ill advised and would amount to misplacing our socio-economic priorities. It is critical to analyze the resultant impact on Nigeria's strive towards generating forex inflows should other countries reciprocate a retaliatory ban on our movies. Any argument about the huge Nigerian market population is easily killed by the reality of its weak currency value.

The foreign movies and books you watch, copy verbatin and reproduce and serialise in nollywood and sometimes use the same title, then sell to Nigerians? You don't even bother to improve upon it, rather, you even bastardise the stories. Nigerians are well exposed and know these things more than you. So please, think well and make better recommendations not this one, mbok. I for one have not bothered to watch any local movie for a long while now and know there are so many others like me. Which of the foreign movies Ghana movies, Somalia movies , Sierra Leon movies😁? If it's those I don't care but Hollywood, he must be high because most of Nollywood films are regurgitated Hollywood films even still at their copy copy level, they won't copy well. They won't create mystery, you can tell the narration via the title. If FG will ban foreign movies for producers like Mo Abudu, Uncle TUnde Kelani, and Kunle Afolayan then..... But for the rest😥😥😥.
