• Some degree of thermal throttling on laptops as thin as the MacBook Pro is to be expected, but issue has been taken with the amount of throttling present in the new 6-core Core i9 models.

• 9to5 Mac tested thermal throttling by exporting videos from Final Cut Pro X

  • The video was 4 min, 4K, 60 FPS

• The cheapest Core i9 MacBook Pro is $2,700.

  • If you max out the GPU, RAM, and SSD, the price is nearly $7000 after tax.

• Fellow tech youtuber David Lee made a video that shows the Mac running Adobe Premiere Pro at clock speeds of only around 2.2GHz rather than the advertised 2.9GHz speed.

  • "Forget about Turbos and all that stuff, it can't even maintain the 2.9GHz base clock, which is absurd. This CPU is an unlocked, over-clockable chip, but all of that CPU potential is wasted inside this chassis, or more the thermal solution that's inside here."

• In an internal document distributed to Apple Authorized Service Providers, Apple has confirmed that the third-generation keyboard on 2018 MacBook Pro models is equipped with a "membrane" to "prevent debris from entering the butterfly mechanism."

• Publicly, Apple has only confirmed that 2018 MacBook Pro models feature an "improved third-generation keyboard for quieter typing," but many suspected that the silicon membrane was actually to prevent "contaminant ingress"

• MSI may have dropped the first hint that AMD is bringing more than 8 cores to the socket AM4 mainstream-desktop platform, mentioning that their upcoming motherboards based on the AMD B450 chipset support 8-core "and up" CPU in a marketing video.

• AMD will get its next opportunity to tinker with its CPU micro-architecture with "Zen 2," being built on the 7 nm silicon fabrication process.

• If AMD decides to stick with the CCX approach to multi-core processors, the company could increase per-CCX core counts.

  • A 50 percent core-count increase enables 12-core processors, while a 100 percent increase brings 16-cores to the AM4 platform.

• The MSI video confirms that these >8-core processors will have backwards-compatibility with existing 400-series chipsets, even if they launch alongside newer 500-series chipset.

• Rumour has it Intel is going to announce their Coffee Lake Refresh family for LGA 1151 platform on 1st August.

• There are rumors of a 6 core CPU with a soldered integrated heat spreader that can reach overclocking speeds of up to 5.5 GHz.

  • Currently, the Intel Core i7-8086K can touch up to 5.3 GHz.

 

WD Shutting Down Hard Drive Factory

• Western Digital will close its hard disk drive factory in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia by the end of 2019, citing lack of demand.

• WD will be left with two disk drive manufacturing plants, both in Thailand

  • The Malaysian plant is in the middle in terms of size

• “The data technology industry is undergoing substantial change.

  • This market transformation is driving increased adoption of SSDs and NAND flash in traditional HDD applications.

• Google has been hit with a record-breaking €4.3 billion ($5 billion) fine by EU regulators for breaking antitrust laws.

• The European Commission says Google has abused its Android market dominance in three key areas:

  • bundling its search engine and Chrome apps into the operating system.

  • blocking phone makers from creating devices that run forked versions of Android

    • Google “did not provide any credible evidence that Android forks would be affected by technical failures or fail to support apps.”

  • making “payments to certain large manufacturers and mobile network operators” to exclusively bundle the Google search app on handsets.

• The European Commission wants Google to bring its “illegal conduct to an end in an effective manner within 90 days of the decision.”

  • Google will need to stop forcing manufacturers to preinstall Chrome and Google search in order to offer the Google Play Store on handsets.

• Google now says it will appeal the decision.

• Corning has announced the release of Gorilla Glass 6, claiming the glass will survive up to 15 drops from a one meter height, and can be “up to two times better” than Gorilla Glass 5.

  • Gorilla Glass 6 can survive drops from higher heights, but, more importantly, has been engineered to survive multiple drops

• Gorilla Glass 6 will have the same amount of scratch resistance as previous generations.

• Gorilla Glass 6 is in production now and available to smartphone makers.

  • It’s expected to reach the market in the next several months.

Samsung announces first LPDDR5 Chip

• Samsung has completed fabrication, functional testing, and validation of a prototype 8Gbit LPDDR5 module.

• LPDDR5 is so cutting edge that the standard itself has yet to be completed;

  • the JEDEC standards group has not yet finalized the specifications for DDR5 or LPDDR5.

• Samsung is targeting up to 6.4Gbps/pin with the new memory.

  • for a typical 32-bit bus chip, that works out to 25.6GB/sec of memory bandwidth.

  • This is a 50% increase in bandwidth over the current LPDDR4(X) standard, which tops out at 4.266Gbps under the same conditions.

• Republican Representative Mike Coffman of Colorado is introducing legislation to enshrine net neutrality rules into law.

• The bill would ensure “no throttling, no blocking, no paid prioritization and oversight of interconnection” rules between internet providers and backbone transit providers

  • Coffman said his bill will “create an ‘internet constitution’ with the foundational elements of net neutrality... The fight to keep the internet open belongs in Congress.”

  • It would also bar the FCC from setting rates for internet service.

 

Disney’s streaming service is resurrecting ‘The Clone Wars’

• Star Wars: The Clone Wars, an animated series that ran on Cartoon Network for five seasons, is coming back.

• the show depicted the adventures of Anakin and Obi-Wan - as well as new characters - during the Clone Wars.

  • Fans praised its ability to showcase a wide range of stories, characters and even genres.

• The Clone Wars was cancelled after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, with a final batch of episodes known as “The Lost Missions” airing on Netflix.

• Walt Disney Animation Studio is set to debut its first VR short film, Cycles, this August at at the SIGGRAPHcomputer graphics conference in Vancouver

  • It will join other forms of VR, AR and MR entertainment in the conference’s ‘Immersive Pavilion’.

• Cycles centers around the meaning of creating a home and focuses on the ups and downs of a family as they create a life in theirs.

when do they talk about the current videos on floatplane?

Talking about streaming services here, rather sadly, I think the 1.5 mbps quality from Netfix or YouTube (courtesy of T-Mobile's Binge-On) has superior quality to HD TV via satellite. And doesn't require home internet service either.

Dennis is awesome but he reminds of that guy who always smiles, shows up to work every day but has no idea what is going on.
