Trans Filmmakers Attacked—While Making Doc About Anti-Trans Violence

"The police violated our rights," one of the victims said. "They completely ignored us."

Two transgender women were targeted in a violent attack on the streets of New York City earlier this week—while filming a documentary about anti-transgender violence, no less.

According to New York Daily News, Norma Ureiro and Bianey Garcia were capturing footage for their film on the street in Jackson Heights, Queens, around 2am this past Saturday, June 29. Both women were then approached by a man and a woman who screamed slurs like "whore" and "faggot" at them.

When Ureiro and Garcia tried to escape the situation, the woman—Paola Custodio—sprayed them with a liquid they claim was pepper spray.

Ureiro and Garcia were both sprayed, although police maintain that both victims refused medical attention. Custodio was arrested on the street and charged with felony assault as a hate crime. However, after police left the scene with her in tow, both filmmakers claim that Custodio's male companion returned and continued to harass them, even spraying Garcia, 29, in the face with pepper spray.

Ureiro and Garcia say they tried to call police again to no avail.

"The police violated our rights," Ureiro, 43, told NY Daily News. "They completely ignored us. They needed to take seriously the threats [the attackers] made."

Garcia went to a nearby hospital to treat her injuries. "Transphobia is real," she wrote on Twitter. "Enough is enough."

Police records indicate that Custodio, 24, has been arrested seven times in the past.

Meanwhile, community members and LGBTQ allies stood up for Ureiro and Garcia, both of whom are activists with the immigrant advocacy group Make the Road, at a rally on Monday, July 1.

Queer Latina Tiffany Cabán, who recently won a historic victory in the Democratic primary for Queens Attorney General, also spoke out in support of both women.

"Just yesterday, I joined thousands and thousands to celebrate our city’s diverse and beautiful LGBTQIA+ community at the Pride parade," she told reporters at a press conference. "But this attack is a reminder of how much work we still have to do."
