Wirecutter's Best Deals Of The Week: Ecovacs Deebot N79S Robot Vacuum, And More

This post was done in partnership with Wirecutter. When readers choose to buy Wirecutter’s independently chosen editorial picks, it may earn affiliate commissions that support its work.

Ecovacs Deebot N79S Robot Vacuum

Street Price: $230; Deal Price: $180

An upgraded version (with Alexa) of our top pick, the N79, in our robot vacuum guide, the N79S is usually well over $200. If you use Alexa voice commands for home automation, it’s a nice option. Use code SQOG2YJD in cart to drop the current sale price of $180 to $170 (substantially cheaper than the current price of its sibling, the N79), which matches the low we saw for it Monday when it was a deal of the day.

The Ecovacs Deebot N79S is a variant of our top pick in our guide to the best robot vacuum. Liam McCabe wrote, “EcoVacs also makes a newer, more expensive version of this robot called the Deebot N79S. It’s basically the same as the old one, but it works with Alexa voice commands and offers an option to boost the suction. That feature reduces the battery’s run-time, though, and we found that as a result of that trade-off, this vacuum picks up a similar amount of debris per session. We’d spend our own money on the older Deebot N79, in the interest of saving a few dollars. But the newer Deebot N79S does work well if you want the voice-command functionality.”

TCL 55R617 4K TV

Street Price: $650; Deal Price: $585

Down to $585, this discount matches the price of recent promotions we’ve seen for this TV. As the TCL 55R617 already offers the high-end features you’d associate with a TV that costs considerably more, this sale makes it an even better value. While this isn’t the best price we’ve tracked for it, it’s within about $30 of the low we’ve seen, and as it usually goes for $650, this is a price worth noting.

The TCL 55R617 is the 55-inch version of our top pick in our guide to the best LCD/LED TV. Chris Heinonen wrote “The TCL 65R617 (and the smaller 55R617) ticks off almost all the required boxes for a high-end TV today. Its image quality matches that of much more expensive TVs, and it offers better media-streaming services and some extra features that costlier TVs don’t have. The TCL’s 120 zones of full-array local dimming provide deep blacks without washing out shadows and also produce bright highlights. The set’s HDR support covers both HDR10 and Dolby Vision protocols. Streaming apps come in the form of a built-in Roku, which has the widest selection of apps and an easy-to-use interface. The Wi-Fi remote even offers a built-in headphone jack for listening without disturbing others. The TV’s preset movie modes make it simple to get good picture quality without much fuss, and the iOS and Android apps offer people who have the necessary tools the ability to do more advanced image calibration. And unlike the 2017 TCL lineup, these TVs are available in Canada as well as in the US.”

Antennas Direct ClearStream Eclipse

Street Price: $45; Deal Price: $35

Typically priced between $40 and $50 (or $40 + shipping from the manufacturer), the drop to $36 for this antenna is a good one. We’ve seen the price trend downward within the past month, which may indicate we can expect to see the ClearStream Eclipse even lower in the future, but this is the lowest price we’ve seen to this point. If you’re an aspiring cord cutter, OTA programming awaits, so grab one at a discount and get watching.

The 35-mile Antennas Direct ClearStream Eclipse is the top pick in our guide to the best indoor  HDTV antenna. Grant Clauser wrote, “The Eclipse can pull in free UHF and VHF HDTV channels within about a 15 to 20 mile radius (and can be purchased with a 20-dB active amplifier if you need more reach). The 12-foot coax cable for connecting to the TV is built in (so you won’t lose it) and long enough that it will probably be more than sufficient to position in most rooms (especially if you’re mounting it behind or above your TV). And if you have the antenna out in the open, it doesn’t look like something you hang laundry on.”

GoPro Hero

Street Price: $200; Deal Price: $180

A recent addition to our action camera guide, this is a new low price for the GoPro Hero. Down to $180 from a street price of $200, this is the first drop of significance we’ve seen and a new low for the 2018 Hero. This action cam offers many of the features we like in GoPro cameras, but it doesn’t have the 4K video or electronic stabilization of the more expensive models.

The GoPro Hero is the budget pick in our guide to the best action camera. Ben Keough and Daniel Varghese wrote, “The GoPro Hero has all of the advantages that make GoPro action cameras so easy to use—the excellent touchscreen interface, built-in waterproofing, compatibility with a plethora of well-constructed accessories—but without the speedy processor that unlocks higher-resolution capabilities and more powerful digital image processing on the GoPro Hero6 Black. In fact, because of its modest processor, the GoPro Hero doesn’t have the ability to record in 4K video at all. We think this compromise is worth it for the improved usability, especially if you’re planning to pick up your action camera to use only on the occasional beach trip.”

Chef’sChoice ProntoPro 4643

Street Price: $45; Deal Price: $35

If you’re seeking a knife sharpening tool, we praise the ProntoPro 4643 for being easy to use, affordable, and likely to stand the test of time. With this discount, it’s even more affordable, down to $35 from $45, just a couple dollars away from the lowest price we’ve seen.

The Chef’sChoice ProntoPro 4643 is the top pick in our guide to the best knife sharpener. Tim Heffernan wrote, “In our tests, the Chef’sChoice ProntoPro 4643 took seriously dull blades—we ran them against a chunk of concrete curbstone until they were all but useless—to tomato-filleting sharpness in less than a minute. And like all our picks here, it’s far easier to master, and far cheaper, than traditional sharpening stones or modern jig systems. Effective, affordable, simple to use, and easy to store, the ProntoPro 4643 is the clear winner for most people.”
