The expectation is that five races will be hosted per year in the resort town.

The groundbreaking was attended by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga on Sunday.

The project is said to cost an eye-popping $1.2bn and will commence once regulatory approval has been given.

A representative from Feonirichi, Prince Adebayo Bamidele Oni was quoted as saying:

We actually intend to construct a G1 standard Grand Prix arena which will host various competitions. We intend to have at least four or five of these competitions every year which will attract tourists to Victoria Falls.

Oni added that six banks were interested in funding the project.

Victoria Falls has suffered in that very little activity has been given a green light for construction in its environs meaning that beyond certain activities such as elephant walks, visiting the park to view the falls, boat rides and the sort, little exists to retain the interest of those who visit it.
