These would be great for my work, as I travel a lot and could use them instead of extra monitors on my laptop.

This has great potential for in flight movies/entertainment ... I think taking this type of tech to ppl like Emirates or other big airline companies will definitely put that company a cut above the rest.

Juts my opinion

I don't expect them to use this in Business or First Class considering larger displays are currently offered and it's much more conformable to use a larger display when laying down compared to wearing that on your head. For economy, a headset like that will never fit in the storage pocket so little to no chance for that to be a thing.

Is there a decent one that doesn't cost as much as my computer?

Just want to point out that why something like Hololens and Meta are that expensive is because they are a lot more than just the screens. Hololens is more or less the whole package; tracking (spatial mapping and hand tracking), processing and just everything done in the headset while Meta needs PC for processing. They are AR headsets while iGlass is just a display for a phone, very fancy display. Not bashing iGlass here, but they are as far from AR as the late 90's onward available headmountable displays like Sony Glasstrons, only thing AR here is that they project the image on a see-through glass instead of watching the displays right on. Adding spatial mapping and other "real" AR stuff to the iGlass would probably start to ramp up the price a lot.

If the price was more like $100 or less I would probably get ones just to attach Vive Tracker to them and get myself cheap SteamVR compatible AR headset (as long as I could hack them to show the same image as is sent to the Vive). Probably not a product worth of $299 quite the same as Lenovo Star Wars Jedi Challenge AR headset that cutted every corner to get the price to $199,99, just kind of like the opposite, dropping everything else to get good screens instead of including tracking and everything and using a phone as a screen.

I would gladly pay more than $120 for a pair of these right now and have it in the mail.  My mom has had back and neck surgery with other ailments and even though she is doing hand over fist better she still needs to lay back in a hospital bed we purchased a few years ago.  I have my xbox one s running plex for her and she has a 32" TV on a jenky AF stand that put's the TV up over 6ft in the air so that she can watch TV while reclined.  This would allow her to lay in the most comfortable position possible and watch TV.

On top of that I'd get a set for myself just because I like tech, have a rift now and several computers.  Another thought I had while watching this video...... this would be perfect for a new age home theater, have rows of theater seating and 5-6 pairs of these with nothing on the wall while still having an atmos setup in a dark and comfy room.  I'm going to eventually finish my basement and have been torn over a lan/gaming room or a home theater, if this was available now I could probably do both either from only using half the room for theater seating and the other half for computer desk's, or some scifi type setup where each recliner has a computer next to it with a proper keyboard tray and these for monitors.  I actually love this product and wouldn't be pining over it if the price was the same as hololens.

I would use this for a video game tournament I host. It'd be great to be able to keep an eye on the livestream with these while doing management stuff at my actual computer.

Another usecase would be to build a computer while using these to view the guide you're following.

quick question, anyone know whether this sort of thing would be useful for productivity stuff? im thinking something like this could, with the right sensors and software, render a multi-monitor setup for a programmer like me obsolete if the text rendering is good and theres no adverse effects of using a display like that for extended periods of time.

How is this "AR" if it just projects something that looks like a screen in front of you?

Maybe I understood incorrectly, but AR should be able to show real-looking objects at points in space, eg. a flower pot on a shelf, and have it stay there as you walk around.

Having displays reflected in front of your eyes is not AR, it's literally just a transparent head mounted display.

The image on the display looks like it is "about 10 feet away" in this case as linus said in this video.

If your eyes have to focus on the "virtual display" at 10 feet then they can't focus on the surroundings at the same time.

Essentially, the virtual flower pot would only look like it is on the shelf when you are exactly 10 feet away from the shelf, otherwise one or the other will be out of focus.

If artificial reality is a virtual 3d object in 3d space, a virtual screen projected 10ft in front of you is definitely not AR.

Those "mobile AR games" don't have this problem because both the surroundings (from the camera) and the virtual object are displayed on the phone screen, which means your eyes are in-focus on both at the same time.

A head-mounted AR display should be able to project objects or information at any focal distance, so that for example someone's name can appear above their head whether they are 5m or 50m away, and both the person and the text are on the same focal plane of your vision. This would result in both the text and person appearing clear and in-focus, not just one or the other as you adjust your eyes to different focal distances.

depends on how you define this definition:

because front-of-eye projection counts as a composite view relative to the eye

realspace holograms would be much better though o_o

Ok, I guess the definition is flexible.

When I think of AR I think of text or objects projected over reality, but in such a way that they are in focus when you look at an object at any distance.

This display technology linus tested can only be a "composite view" when the projection is at the same focal distance of the object or plane around it, because otherwise your eyes need to switch between looking at the display or at reality.

I don't know if the hololens has the same problem.

that sounds difficult o_o not sure how to really put it to words though...

traditionally for something to be in focus on a far focal plane, it itself has to be near the focal plane. not sure if simply defocusing a projector would just work since it's stuck in the same distance...

Yeah it can't be a defocused image at a fixed distance, that won't work.

Optics can be used to create images at virtual focal point, for example the device linus reviewed, he said looks like the screen is 10ft away.

I think the biggest problem is more having multiple on-screen objects at different focal points.

Having a single object with some optics to change the virtual focus distance should be possible.

Wow this has so much potential. I would love to see a AR app, somehow converted into a VR viewing mode and then projects onto the screens. So you would have a camera or just the phone in the top part giving a view of what is directly in front, which will be projected onto the screens. That probably wouldn't raise the price of these things by much. I really hope someone picks these up cause they are dope af. And even though google glass sucked i would love to see something like them actually work.
