Omoyele Sowore nominated for United States 'Prisoner of Conscience' honour

Omoyele Sowore nominated for United States

Omoyele Sowore has been nominated to receive the Prisoner of Conscience honour from the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission of the United States House of Representatives.

The bipartisan commission is charged with promoting, defending and advocating for international human rights. U.S lawmaker, Josh Gottheimer, sponsored Sowore’s nomination for the prestigious recognition.

The Congressman made the announcement during a meeting with other American politicians on Friday.

He said, “For months now, I have been working closely with the Sowore family, the Haworth community, the State Department, and my colleagues to advocate on Yele’s (Omoyele) behalf.

“We are urging the Nigerian Government to protect Yele’s safety, provide him with the due process he deserves, and ultimately permit him to return home as soon as possible.

“We will continue watching the situation in Nigeria, a democracy seeking closer ties with the United States, to make sure the government respects basic human rights.”

Gottheimer and other members of Congress had earlier sent a letter to Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), requesting that immediate steps be taken to ensure the safety and security of Sowore while still in custody and to ensure he get a credible trial.

Sowore was first arrested on August 3, 2019 for calling on Nigerians to take to the streets in peaceful demonstrations to demand a better country from political leaders. He was briefly released on bail on December 5 but rearrested a few hours later on December 6 by DSS operatives while appearing for his trial in a case brought against him by the Nigerian Government.

He is being accused of insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and planning to bring down his regime. In all, Sowore spent over four months in detention despite two court orders directing his release on bail during that period.

Good one God’s own country(US)! You did not earn that title for nothing. As for these ones here in the zoo called Nigeria, they have no regards for human rights.

Return "home". Hmmmmm. So, since this is isn't home, and he only came to "Nigeria" to see if he could get his share of the national cake, may I suggest that he should go "home" permanently !

Sowore is a Nigerian citizen who lives and does business in US. By the provisions of the Constitution he can vote and be voted for, and protest against bad governance. Every Nigerian in diaspora is wishing for a safe snd prosperous Nigeria to return to some day, abeg.

I am one of those who supported that this guy is jailed for life. Look at someone that owns two citizenships coming to cause 'revolution' in Naija, that was a treasonable offense. And US who are holding on to many looted funds from Naija is supporting him. That's another treasonable offense. It is a shame that some Nigerians are supporting this colonization. Look at the way Britain treated the issue of Kanu, which was similar? They never got fully inovoled despite Kanu being a UK citizen. That was why Kanu ran away.

You are ignorant, UK was first to intervene on Kanu's behalf. They sent in some some lawyers to defend him at the earliest stage but Kanu told them off and warned them never to come back. How did you think he was able to eventually move back to the UK? I didn't expect a zoo monkey to know anything anyway. You just mirrored jubril.

From your write up, you are one of the troubles of Nigeria being a stark illiterate. Yele is not a US citizen but a green card holder (he already qualifies to file for citizenship from what I read about his residency in the US). Being a permanent resident of the United States, it is believed that America is home. However, bear in mind that he is yet to file for naturalization or pledge the oath of allegiance and I believe strongly that he is doing this on purpose so that I can vie for Nigerian presidency.

Before u start wahala..make sure you have top country residency or pali UK saved Kanu...US saved sowere.. US is next to heaven... The most powerful country on earth. What they bound in US remain bound anywhere..what they loose becomes loose..if you don't yield they cut bilateral connections..hence your country economy will suffers..no other country want to tie with you. That is how powerful US is.

And he keeps winning,Buhari just played into his hands, exactly what happens when you have a home schooled idiot as a President whose priority is to have cretins run and manage strategic agencies, how does ones right to peaceful demonstration in a democratic society amount to treason and we have an Attorney General , a supposed lawyer ?

All of you supporting Buhari with this is Tyrant mentality and saying that US should stay off issues of Nigeria... just know that they have added a HUGE red flag to Nigeria at large and that ultimately impacts Nigerian citizens. Tomorrow now when una dey find visa and they reject you do not complain. Me, I'm Nigerian but have yankee passport so e nor concern me but I read comments insulting US involvement and I know some of you guys don't understand the full impact of this notorious bad reputation Buhari is bringing upon Nigerians at large...make una continu (in pepe Jonathan's voice) peace out!
