Eagles coach Doug Pederson says Nick Foles will get another start in Week 2

Carson Wentz isn’t quite ready yet.

The Eagles aren’t going to rush Wentz back from a torn ACL, and that means Nick Foles will start Week 2. Eagles coach Doug Pederson confirmed that Foles will be their starter when they play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

It’s not a big surprise that Wentz will miss another week, and maybe more. A report from NFL Network last week said it could take several weeks for Wentz to return to a game, though other reports were more optimistic. All we know at the moment is that Week 2 is out for Wentz.

Eagles won the opener with Nick Foles at QB

As we saw in the opener, the Eagles can afford to take it slow with Wentz. Foles started Week 1 and while he wasn’t great, Philadelphia’s defense was. The Eagles beat the Atlanta Falcons 18-12. Not that the Eagles would rush back Wentz, the face of the franchise, if they were 0-1. But it doesn’t hurt that Philadelphia is off to a 1-0 start without their star quarterback.

Foles was 19-of-34 for 117 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in that game against Atlanta. It continued his struggles from the preseason. The reigning Super Bowl MVP hasn’t played well since that Super Bowl, but he has an outstanding cast around him.

The Eagles know Foles is capable of getting hot, and they also know they can win games if he doesn’t.

Alshon Jeffery to return to practice

The Eagles might get some more help for Foles this week. Receiver Alshon Jeffery will be back at practice this week, according to NFL Network’s James Palmer. Jeffery has been recovering from rotator cuff surgery he had after the Super Bowl. When he can return to games, it’ll be a nice boost for the offense. The Eagles seemed to miss him in the opener. They didn’t have a pass play of longer than 18 yards.

The Eagles will be fine without Wentz, however long that will be. That’s one reason they can afford to take their time on his return.
