Comic book writer Drew Edwards will be hosting a party for his comic book Halloween Man. The Road to 20 Years Kickoff Party is set for October 19, at the Flamingo Cantina in downtown Austin.
Over 17 issues, Halloween Man has told the tale of Solomon Hitch, a half-man, half-zombie superhero who always comes back to life. He and his scientist girlfriend battle everything from vegan vampires to the Loch Ness Monster.
“Halloween Man” was originally written for Edward’s identical twin, who died in a car accident when they were twenty years old. The concept was created by both of them as they both loved comics and horror, and helped Edwards deal with his loss and grief.
"Funny to say, this comic book saved my life, but it really did," Edwards said in a press release.
In 2018 Edwards walked away with the Best of Austin’s Reader Poll award for Best Comic Creator.
The event features a costume contest, vendors, sets from several kindred musical spirits including garage punk band the Flametrick Subs, all-female Danger*Cakes, and a performance from San Diego punkabilly trio Hard Fall Hearts. Proceeds from the party benefit local nonprofit organizations Girls Rock Austin and Out Youth.
