St Johnstone 1-1 Hibernian

By Brian McLauchlinBBC Scotland at McDiarmid Park

St Johnstone and Hibernian had to settle for a point each in a hard-fought affair at McDiarmid Park.

Tony Watt's deflected shot off Hibs defender Ryan Porteous gave St Johnstone a first-half lead.

Saints goalkeeper Zander Clark pushed away headers from Oli Shaw and Martin Boyle, but when the two combined again Shaw headed in at the back post.

Both teams had chances to win it, the closest through Saints' Blair Alston, who was denied by Efe Ambrose's block.

The point is St Johnstone's first of the season, while Hibs hold on to second spot in the Premiership - two points behind Edinburgh rivals Hearts.

Two attack-minded teams - analysis

It was so refreshing to see two teams playing attacking football, with wingers and strikers who have an eye for goal.

Both St Johnstone and Hibernian were seeking to push forward at every opportunity and the crowd of just over 4,600 left McDiarmid Park in the knowledge both teams gave their all in an attempt to secure victory.

The pair will feel they could have snatched all three points, but managers Tommy Wright and Neil Lennon will also know they may have gained nothing at the end of the day despite their efforts.

The performances of Matty Kennedy and Drey Wright combined, with the passion and energy of Tony Watt, will give Saints fans comfort that they can have a successful season.

For Hibs, Lennon will also be pleased that his team continue their unbeaten run and can now look forward to Thursday night's match in Norway, where a similar scoreline against Molde will see them through to the play-off round of the Europa League.
