• At GTC Japan, Nvidia released two new marketing slides for their RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards, showcasing the relative performance of  the new cards compared to the GTX 1080 and 1080 Ti.

• Nvidia claims their RTX 2080 is good enough for 4K 60FPS gameplay, with the 2080 Ti delivering even higher performance levels.

  • There’s no Y-axis labels on the graphs.

• The slides indicate a performance jump between GTX 10 series and RTX 20 series that’s similar to the jump between the GTX 9 and GTX 10 series.

• When Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) is added, the performance gap between the RTX 20 series and the GTX 10 series gets significantly wider

  • But Nvidia's new 20 series products also ship with significantly higher MSRPs than their predecessors

EU approves Copyright Directive, including ‘link tax’ and ‘upload filter’

• The European Parliament has voted in favor of the Copyright Directive, a controversial piece of legislation intended to update online copyright laws for the internet age.

• The directive was originally rejected in July following criticism of two key provisions:

  • Article 11, dubbed the “link tax” by critics.

  • Article 13, dubbed the “upload filter” by critics.

• However, an updated version of the directive has now been approved, along with amended versions of Articles 11 and 13.

• Article 11

  • is intended to give publishers and papers a way to make money when companies like Google link to their stories, allowing them to demand paid licenses.

  • Critics say: attempts to “tax” platforms like Google News for sharing articles have repeatedly failed, and that the system would be ripe to abuse by copyright trolls.

• Article 13

  • Requires certain platforms like YouTube and Facebook stop users sharing unlicensed copyrighted material.

  • Requires that platforms proactively work with rights-holders to stop users uploading copyrighted content.

  • Critics say: The only way to do so would be to scan all data being uploaded to sites like YouTube and Facebook.

    • This would create an incredible burden for small platforms, and could be used as a mechanism for widespread censorship.

    • This is why figures like Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee came out so strongly against the directive.

• Those backing these provisions say the arguments above are the result of scaremongering by big US tech companies, eager to keep control of the web’s biggest platforms.

  • They point to existing laws and amendments to the directive as proof it won’t be abused in this way.

  • These include exemptions for sites like GitHub and Wikipedia from Article 13, and exceptions to the “link tax” that allow for the sharing of mere hyperlinks and “individual words” describing articles without constraint.

• The directive itself still faces a final vote in January 2019

  • After that it will need to be implemented by individual EU member states,

  • States could vary significantly in how they choose to interpret the directive’s text.

• Windows Insiders on Redstone 5 builds have noticed an Edge app recommendation “ad” when trying to install Chrome or Firefox.

• Windows users across the internet have since shown major outrage over this, and it quickly became yet another controversy for Microsoft.

• The company has now issued a statement saying that the pop-up is just a part of Insider testing

• YouTube began posting its first test videos that implement the AV1 video CODEC, which aims to significantly reduce video stream bandwidths without sacrificing quality, exceeding the compression standards set by even HEVC.

  • Here’s playlist of videos that have an AV1 version available.

    • You may not notice a reduction in your data consumption just yet, because these video have been encoded at a very high bitrate to test performance.

    • AV1 is currently only used for the 480p versions of the videos because of performance issues. The AV1 files for other, higher resolutions exists, but they won't be served automatically.

• AV1 provides an architecture for both moving and still images, and Google, which is partly funding its development, foresees a future in which it replaces entrenched standards such as JPEG and H.264.

  • AV1 aims to be a video format for the web that is both state of the art and royalty free

• Besides better compression, its key selling point is its royalty-free license, which could translate to tangible operating-cost savings for YouTube and other video streaming services.

• This week, a user was surprised to find three movies he had purchased through iTunes had simply disappeared from his library, so he contacted Apple to find out what happened…

• Apple told him it no longer had the license rights for those movies so they had been removed.

  • To which he responded: Ah, but I didn't rent them, I actually bought them through your "buy" option.

• Apple then informed him that while he had bought the movies, what he had actually paid for was the ability to download the movie to his hard drive.

When it launched it was $699 MSRP

The thing with the RTX cards, the main sticking point is the price of the 2080ti, be it a renamed Titan or not, its the only card that so far as leaks are concenred that has a significant performance bump over the 1080ti in rasterized games.

The 2080 looks to have the same perofrmance as the average OC'ed 1080ti. (1900-2000 core clock 1080ti's), so your paying extra for RT and DLSS, which will only be in a handfull of games.

 

Once these cards release and we get confirmed performance figures, I hope to see the 2080 OC like a beast and put a good reason into buying one over the 1080ti, becouse atm you mgiht aswell buy a 1080ti.. or 2, and be happy.

 

Those who have no issue buying a 2080ti 'should' be the same people who were ok buying Titans in the past, so hey if you one of those popel go for it, al lthe bets to you, but the rest rightly complain when a card comes out without the Titan name tag with a price like this, its marketed at the wrong people, thats why the price is such a problem.
