Theresa May has met with French president Emmanuel Macron with the aim of winning his support on her latest Brexit plans.

The pair met on Friday evening at his presidential retreat in the south of France.

Mrs May cut short her holiday in Italy for talks with Mr Macron.

According to his office, the pair had a working meeting followed by a private dinner.

They dined on tomatoes and saffron flavoured langoustines, thyme-flavoured sea bass and chicken with vegetables.

The meal was topped off with a choice of dark chocolate creme brulee or fruit, according to the BBC.

Her visit comes amid tensions between Britain and the EU over the terms of a potential Brexit deal.

The Fort de Bregancon has been the holiday retreat of French leaders for decades. Isolated on a small peninsula, it can be easily secured.

The site is open to the public when the president is not using it.
