20 year oldNigerian student commits suicide in her hotel room in UK

Omojola Ogundipe, a 20-year-old Bristol University student took her own life in a Cardiff hotel room, just days after a visit home for Mother’s Day. Staff at the Citrus Hotel in Cardiff found her body hanging in her hotel room after she missed her check-out deadline.

Late Omojola, described as "bright and bubbly", was in the second year of her economics undergraduate degree at Bristol University, and was a leading member of the Gospel Choir Society.

A campaigner on environmental and human rights issues, she volunteered with several groups and was popular among her peers. An inquest into her death heard her dad tell Pontypridd Coroner’s Court his daughter had visited home just three days before they heard the tragic news.

During the court hearing on July 5, her dad, Kurle Ogundipe, said in a statement: "I last saw Omojola on March 11 when she returned home for the weekend. She appeared her usual bubbly self."

He said the family were not aware of any ill health and did not think she suffered from depression or mental health problems. However, Miss Ogundipe's close friend, Hannah Agbeyegbe, in a written statement read out to the court, said: "She was an independent person. Quite private.

She didn't really talk a lot about her personal life. It was around this time (when she moved to Bristol) that she disclosed to me that she was depressed and she had been having suicidal thoughts." Summing up, coroner Christopher Woolley accepted the cause of death given by consultant pathologist Dr David Thomas at the University Hospital of Wales as death by hanging.

This is so sad. That’s why I try as much as possible to be very open to my kids. I make them see me not only as a parent, but also a confident. Tell me whatever is bordering you, or what you are thinking because I am always listening and available.

Maybe if you understand mental health and depression you won't ask this question. RIP to a beautiful and brave girl. Condolences to her grieving family.

Forget that thing. We confide in many. They take it lightly. I don't blame them. No need to confide in anybody anymore no one wants to he burdened. Just try till u can't anymore.

No one knows the burden anyone is carrying. So try not to judge anyone. Because when you have no experience with something it's difficult to understand.

Depression is treatable like Hypertension or diabetes. Please, there is no need to be ashamed of it. Sometimes there are social stressors/ triggers and sometimes there aren’t. It results in an imbalance of brain chemicals which we have medications for which work in addition to talk therapy at the same time. If you ,a friend or family member has symptoms of depression, please see a psychiatrist who is a medical doctor and a specialist in mental health.

A parent brings a child into this world without permission from the child. The child has a right to decide whether or not it wants to exist in this world.

The Nigerian society needs to talk more about this problem cuz its not a stigma ,.It can be monitored through antidepressant that can level out the meds and counseling. She probably didnt inform her, because our culture frowns over such issue so she has no one to inform other than her friend. Our society perceives mental illness as a curse by someone. Or that craziness doesn't run in our family.Or it is not our portion for you to be crazy.Bunch of stupid shit.I bet all the signs were there, but they didnt see it..I am speaking fom a therapist perspective. You just have to be knowledgeable enough to see the signs .Awareness is key and may the soul of the departed rest in peace.

I understand there is a growing threat from depression but what is/are the cause/causes? Are we putting too much pressure on ourselves? Or is it that many are raised to be too weak nowadays?or is there something in the air? What is it?

I have heard some foolish people say that depression is a thing of the mind. They have no idea how this works. Being depressed is a dangerous sign that precedes suicide.
