Hello,
Now that the move has been successful, I’m trying out a new commenting system plugin called WPDISCUZ.
You can read more about it here. https://wpdiscuz.com/
The original comment editor I installed last week didn’t work properly for everyone, and it screwed up comment indentation, so I had to disable it.
Try it out, leave a comment, leave a comment rating, try the sort features, etc. You can edit a comment up to 15 minutes after making it.
You can also visit another thread to see how it looks with many comments already in place.
-Anthony
UPDATE: I think I have the “reply” in nested comments working, and the EDIT function working properly. Also, the good news is that once you put in your name and email, it should always remember you….at least that is what I’m told by the documentation.
The bad news: General comment form is at the top, and there appears to be no way to change it according to this thread:
So, just use it for a general comment about the article, or scroll down and reply to an existing comment.
UPDATE2: You can display an image (or YouTube video) within a comment, (see examples in the thread below) but you MUST use https rather than http. Just simply insert the image URL, no tags or HTML needed.
If you use http all you’ll get is a link, but no embedded image.
Feel free to play around with inserting images or video in comments below.
Oh, I saw the formatting change but when I hit “Reply” to a comment, nothing happened.
Yeah, I’m seeing that too, try again here?
Try it now…
OK, working.
I still think the Seahawks should’ve run the ball
They would all pretty much agree with you, I’m sure.
Though few of them are still Seahawks. One who is is the guy who could and should have changed the call sent into him, ie the amiable Mr. Wilson.
Or at least passed left or right rather than over the middle, hey diddle diddle.
The ball should have gone to Marchon Lynch.
And Belichick should have played Malcom Butler
Pete Carroll went in to Starbucks and ordered a Mocha. The guy behind the counter charged him $6, wrote his name on the cup, leaned against the counter and said “this is yours Pete … do you want I should reach it across the counter to you, or do you want me to toss it to you?”
Lets see If I can reply
Looks good. I did get a squak from the system saying that I was posting too fast 😋
The indentation is MUCH better, Anthony. Hmm, however… I see a character count up there, TRYING to be inconspicuous – is this a new length-limiting policy? This is about the only site where I’m not the MOST long-winded. Also about to test the “keep my info.”
Ah – strange. Filled in the info on another reply, and it magically appeared here (this reply widget stayed open even when I went elsewhere in the thread – and there is apparently no explicit “cancel” link in the widget – although there is one to cancel editing).
One more “like” though – an annoying thing on other systems is that you can upvote your own comment – THIS widget prevents it (at least under the same login). Nice!
Posted two comments in another thread… the first apparently disappeared and took a long time to do so; the second posted, and only then did the first one become visible. Does it do a lookup in a known-poster database, and if so, is it really slow??
As long as you’re working on the buttons I would suggest a quote button so you don’t have to add blockquote and perhaps “B”old “I”talic and “U”nderline too
Thanks a heap for the +/- notation Anthony. A web site with as many login readers as you have, we readers need to scroll quickly through to the most worthwhile comments, guided by the +/- notations. GREAT!
I wish you would only see a limited number of the nested comments, like 2.
The problem is that sometimes the first comment takes over, or some tangent thread takes page after page after page of scrolling to get to other stuff.
That would allow later unnested comments to have a lot more value. My 2 cents.
How come this FAQ doesn’t work for me?
Subject: Linking to past comments
Is it because the “time stamp” is located at the end of the comment (at lower right-hand corner)?
Sam C
Those instructions are wrong for the new commenting system. Instead, click on the “link” symbol (🔗) at the upper-right corner, then click in the pop-up box, then ctrl-A (select all), then ctrl-C (copy to clipboard). (Then click the 🔗 again to make the pop-up box go away.)
It is more cumbersome than the old system, but it works.
Dave B, …… thank you very much.
I would never have figured that out on my own.
And not being able to follow the conversation from one day to the next was really beginning to bug me.
Always appreciate your blog.
I assume we would place test comments here. So here you go!
No, no, no! Test comments are supposed to go on some OTHER thread…..
Well there is a test link above in the main site title block 😉
Will this anti-spam measure really work?
Visit http://www.flockingsomewhere.com/paris-bowels-the-sewer-museum/ for the best in everything to help you bypass the home furnishing boredom, and see life in a new atmosphere of without debt. 😁
Interestingly System stops me posting as a new comment but not as a reply.
does this work
pk
Jeff, what incantation did you use for that indentation?
I can get a similar effect with multiple characters, but you did something different. Here’s the effect of space space space:
Testing 4 5 6
(However, when I edit an old comment, the entities are invisible—ugh!)
Here’s the version after saving and then editing; it still works, but I wish the edit button wouldn’t change what I’m editing!
Testing 4 5 6
BTW, what does “pk” mean?
Appears he used blockquote tags.
testing <blockquote> tag…
End test.
Yes, well, because.
Anthony, I see your reply to me but I hit reply on your comment and nothing happens.
Tom, I’m able to reply to your comment. However, it looks like the system isn’t remembering my name and email address.
Who am I?
Remembers who I am (though it doesn’t show it on ‘reply” — but posts correctly.
Edit and multiple edit works…(this is my second edit ….)
You should have edited again. You have an open parenthesis. 😁
Dang….the best laid plans….
No reply or edit for me either. I do see the timer item.
It’s apparently been fixed, because I see both the Reply and Edit buttons now.
test test 12345 54321v test out
Vote worked
This is a test of the new system.
Did the test work?
this is only a test. If this had been a real post, you would have been warned to proceed to your nearest shelter.
At that time I couldn’t comment on my comment. Looks like they fixed that now.
I wish WordPress would put a edit feature! I hit post comment…then noticed I miss a letter or hit it twice or some other goofy thing. 🙄
Well yes, but this new plugin has editing, for 15 minutes.
Where is the ‘edit’ feature? And why isn’t it recognizing me after the first comment?
Okay, it just showed up.
I can see ALL the edits for everyone… he he……
It takes time for big changes to software with a huge database to move around, patience is advised as we can see Anthony and others behind the scenes are hard at work, they deserve the respect and support for the hard work they do.
That’s nice.
My own fumble fingers will appreciate the 15 minute edit greatly.
I do NOT like the + and – feature because neither science nor truth are determined by vote. It has been my experience on other sites that the finest comments get a lot of negative votes from people with other beliefs. Add to that WUWT’s trolls, and it will be hard to find the good stuff.
I also don’t like what it will do to Nick Stokes. He has never figured out that carbon dioxide is the basis of Life an Earth; he is an alarmist. I appreciate his courage coming here. He sometimes posts rubbish, but he is quite thoughtful and often posts really worthwhile stuff. We need him.
We also need any other alarmists with the courage to visit this site and leave intelligent comments.
I see that there is a spell check here. That will help to reduce misspellings and other typos.
Not that the +/- feature won’t disappear or change the position of comments, and I don’t think Nick will really care. We’ll run it for awhile and see how it goes.
In my experience +/- features always end up as a form of stigmatising the bullies’ chosen target.
It is not good for a diverse debate.
You have a point, but for me, as I am often very late to a post, I’d just like to know if somebody actually read my comment whether they liked it or not.
(Maybe a “read” or “nuetered” … er … “nuetral” button?)
Reply doesn’t seem to work in FireFox. Checking Safari now.
Replying from Firefox 60.0.1 on a MacBook Pro.
Replying from Firefox 60.0.1 on Windows 10. My name and email are not being entered automatically, however.
reply from FF60.0.1 on Win 8.1 but it isn’t entering my name and email
Testing, testing, one, two, flee.
Cheers, Anthony.
Hey, Bob. Been a while.
…four, five, clicks.
Two pints make one cavort.
cavorting is always a gambol.
workin in opera!
Darn it, Miami is underwater.
OK, the reply button in nested comments has an issue, waiting on a support ticket
I tried using “reply” and nothing happened.
try now…
Seeing if the “reply” works in my Firefox here. Also worth suggesting to anyone interested who’s any sort of investigative reporter, that it might be worthwhile to see if that other hugely widespread “Disqus” commenting system out there is paving the way is some manner (algorithms or whatever) for pro-AGW sites to automatically screen out commentary from AGW skeptic folks.
Reply in Safari INOP too.
No edit function.
Image test.
(image doesn’t exist – Anthony )
No image, just a link (blue text on white background). When hovering over the link though, the mouse cursor turns into the normal ‘hand’, but the actual link text disappears. Link is still active though as shows up in the status bar.
use https rather than http in the URL and it should work
Test reply
and edit
I am able to access the +/- vote toggles but was not able to ‘reply’ to comments. I’ll test it here.
Apparently when you fill in the info on one reply, and have another reply widget open, it shares that info. But not on a new reply without anything else going.
Reply doesn’t work with Chrome on Linux either. I prefer that old comment font but that should be an easy fix?
This reply comment is from a Linux user using Seamonkey browser.
It all seems to work. 🙂
😀 😃 😄 ☺️ 😁 😀 😍 even the smilies.
An Image —
?resize=350%2C200&ssl=1
And the edit function, though finding the comment is interesting as it shoots up the page.
here is my image test:
Voted this up on an iPhone with mobile Safari
Voted this up with Samsung tablet using Chrome
No edit option for my first comment and once clicked the share and link pop ups seem not to be cancellable.
Anthony:
How did you do that? If I copy an image can I just plonk it into a comment, or do I have to find some associated URL or something? and where would I get that?
I have a simple mind.
Alasdair
This site won’t host the picture, you have to have it hosted elsewhere on the Internet. It used to be that PhotoBucket would do it for free, but now they want money 🙁 If anyone knows a good, free hosting service, I’d love to hear about it!
Looks like you’re still using XP Anthony 😛
He can’t be – he often tells people to update their software!
I had to go to 120% on my Firefox browser to see the comments easily. But then I’m an old guy – I have that set on a LOT of other sites.
(And, no I don’t hate you Daylene – testing the downvote button.)
I don’t hate you either Daylene and upvoted you, so you now have no votes again. Not sure if that’s a positive move however?
Font! Yes, the edit box has too light a font. No contrast for old eyes.
The font needs to be larger and darker, please.
Thanks for all your hard work Anthony. Giving this a test.
I will give it a shot. I’d like a shot myself. I seem to be having a summer cold or the bFlu has somehow hit me and is making my life a Raggedy Ann doll.
Sniffles!!!
Sara,
Dr. Mac prescribes a large mug of hot cider, with cinnamon and lemon, topped with a hearty splash of dark rum!
Hmmm, I think I’ll follow that prescription. You know, just in case. 😀
Sorry you’re not feeling well. Get better soon.
No joy. Up vote works but no edit function and ‘Reply’ button inoperable.
Try it now…
Hot Dog!! ‘Reply’ button works!
Yeee Haaawwww! So does the ‘Edit’ button!
Good Work, Anthony!!!
Anthony,
The 1st time the ‘reply’ button worked for me (opened a reply comment window), I had to also provide my user name and email address. Subsequent replies did not require that information again. It is displayed ‘filled in’. An antispam security feature, judging from the adjacent statement “This comment form is under antispam protection.”
Yup “reply” works. (if you see this).
up-vote works too. *edit works too” (added after this post)
test link to youtube
Anthony, test link did not work. Copied a URL from youtube, does not show.
Try again below see if it shows: (you tube test video)
Both videos show up for me, try refreshing the page
Image test. 10 kyrs ago this river was a glacier.
Finally the test links showed up, took about 5 minutes (spam filter?). I like the new look
test picture:
https://www.publicdomainpictures.net/en/view-image.php?image=21236&picture=nice-flowers
that’ not an actual image link, but a PHP page that generates an image…so no joy
Got it. Try this again just for a test, then I will leave you alone.
try this again.
Wikipedia commons does some odd things with URLs, I displayed just the photo there and copied its URL:
The picture you wanted?
Yes, just spamming for the test, AW already corrected me on the URL (no jpg extension).
Hmm. That wasn’t the behavior for me (see above). Firefox, latest update, on this machine. If you have a different browser, that is probably the reason for the difference.
Using Chrome. Just cleared cashe two days ago too. Spamming just to test. All my URL’s take a while to post “officially”. Lag time on the server? But they are showing up eventually.
Hi Anthony. Well done with the move, although reregistering to follow by e-mail took a while and I had to use an alternate e-mail address to get it to work.
Hope this new plugin works out OK.
Cheers
Andi
Replying to boneheaded comments is what makes WUWT fun,🤦♂️
Reply is working now. it made me log in again
But don’t all heads have bones?!
Editing afterwards even works. A big improvement!
Reply button does nothing for me, Windows 10, Chrome browser.
Try it now…
Bingo , but I have to load name and email to do it. .
speak English please
Video English test didn’t work.
Works
test video ????
https://youtu.be/C0DPdy98e4c
This video
Interesting, it seems I am using the same ULR, yours shows, mine does not? Possibly it is me or my computer.
Try again?
Works!
LLAP. 🖖
Blah blah blah, it seems to work fine with my standard of commentary.
If I want to post a photo (jpeg) that’s on my computer hard-drive, can I do that? Or do I have to post it from my website? – JPP
WUWT won’t host (store) your picture, you have to host it elsewhere on the web. In days of yore, PhotoBucket was a good free service, but they want money now. 🙁
Anybody know a good, free hosting service?
Maybe you can host a picture on Facebook
Yes, hopefully Facebook will keep their pictures indefinitely.
Just copy the picture location and add &xxx=foo.jpg to the end.
Thanks – JPP
The image link I posted showed up in white text on my tablet. It worked as a link, but was virtually invisible.
All you do is gripe… 😉
LOL, I have never been so insulated in my whole life 😉
Try it now, use https rather than http in the image URL
Reply button also doesn’t work for me (Firefox, Windows 10).
try it again…
Win 10, Firefox – replying to Anthony
upvote worked
I just tried to reply to Tom in Florida’s latest comment, and nothing happened. I appreciate your efforts to improve the site, don’t give up!
Reload the page.
Thanks Joel
It lets me reply to my own comment.
Okay, the comments box is appearing at the top of the screen . Is it supposed to do that?
And the :”reply” button doesn’t work for me. And I see that I have to insert my identity now, so it’s either not recognizing people or something else is wrong with the comment Elves.
And it isn’t recognizing me after the first post, so I have to add my name and e-mail every time.
I’m telling Mom!
And now the reply button is working. Curiouser and curiouser. And it is not remembering me or my e-mail.
Mommy!!!!!!! Make the bad stuff go away!!!
I’m updating, should remember your email now….
Yes comment box is at top, try hitting reply now.
The reply button is now working for me. I just left the site, then came back in, and now it works.
Test …. 1 to 2 minute time to edit should be enough time. Any longer and risk is replying to a comment that has been changed due to original poster editing. Could be an issue that could become a mess with changes leading to changes leading to more editing. 1 or 2 minutes max to edit typos is good enough.
Agree. Adjusting comments after a reply could be detrimental leading to too many cases of he said she said. As W.E. asks, quote the exact words if you disagree, but what if those words get changed by the author after the fact? I think just about everyone is tolerant of typos, missing words and such, we all do it from time to .
You see, I left off the word “time” at the end but you’all know it should have been there.
hey there everybody, just did an update to fix reply issues, try again please
so far the reply works and the vote works
Reply works for me.
It is a mess.
I hate to be to critical, with all the bone crushing hard work which is going into this.
But a few points:
Too busy, too many graphic elements going on.
{Show More} – not optimal to hide stuff.
Comment Box needs to be at the bottom, we need to encourage the more hasty of us to read before commenting. Having the comment box at the top encourages the wrong thing.
WUWT is *not* FACEBOOK.
Vote up, Vote down, Link, Share, Social Media! Do not need, do not want.
The Links:
Displays as light blue on white.
When you cursor over it, it highlights to *White on White*, that is, it *disappears*.
If you click on it, it stays disappeared. Bad.
What rocket scientist came up with that color scheme.
What we need:
1) Inline display of graphics, and hopefully videos.
2) 5 minute edit
Well I’ve only had it enabled for 15 minutes…still tweaking, and accusing me of being like Facebook, well that’s just harsh.
OK, OK.
I try it again, reply works. Like Sara, I have to enter my name and email again. But that is OK for now, at least.
I will wait and see how things shake out after tweaking and optimizing.
Maybe as a Plan B, keep the old system handy, and see if the software gnomes can fix the indent formatting and add the much needed inline graphics.
Doing stuff like this, you *always* want a Plan B. You just never know when things will go from bad to worse.
Inline graphics works now, but you must use https rather than http in the URL, feel free to try it.

OK, here goes. Hot summers in the northern hemisphere and cold autumns in the southern. Who would have thought?
4 emoticons test. Lets see how many work.
😀 😉 :billgates
Wow, I ended up at the top somehow. 2 for 4 :p
Edit, and now I am back down below. Like a roller coaster in here.
OK, so here’s a test comment, apropos of …. not much.
Yesterday there was a 2-meter space rock (I hesitate to call it an “asteroid”, even though it – just barely! – met the criterion of “asteroid” of having been seen in space before hitting the Earth.)… But this barely-an-asteroid WAS observed, even a couple of HOURS before impact.
Which reminds me of the post-Chelyabinsk meme; “”Asteroids” are nature’s way of asking “How’s that space program coming along?” “
The best thing about the old site was the fonts, especially when reading on the phone. I would copy them verbatim from the old site.
Jeez Anthony, when do you sleep? If I hit the lottery you’ll be he first to know and thanks for your tireless efforts.
Works fine, both edit and reply
I like the new comment system. Edit function seems to work OK. (Windows 10, Firefox 60.0.1) Edit function does too.
Ok Here is my try
Ok Here is here is a change. Humm. it appears to be working
Aha! Its working now, but it missed my name.
Now some people are saying that the development of geothermal energy is responsible for the volcanic eruptions in Hawaii. So removing thermal energy from a volcano causes it to become more active? What’s up with that? (the edit option seems to work)
Reply gives me a google search to the meaning of reply.
I think you are joshing me…
Joshing Anthony…
roflmao ………….. repeatedly w/edit …… edit works!
Nicely done Joel! Where’s Josh when we need him for a little Grecian formula edit? 😉
No need for Grecian Formula. He’s frosted.
Comment button on top of thread and currently showing 67 prev comments and labeled ‘leave a reply.
I have 2 tabs open and will time between posting comment on this tab (#1) and it showing on tab#2 . I was not able to even refresh tab #1 earlier comment for about 10 min but comment showed up on tab #2.
I time this comment and reply back to this comment on tab#1 and simply monitor thread on tab #2
Post comment 9:53
Comment on thread showed up immediately on tab#2 after refreshing. Then Tab #1 offered an immediate chance for reply which is this.
Now going to post this comment and check results with this tab and not refresh tab#2
Posting time 9:58
9:58 comment showed up immediately after posting on this tab #1
Posting time 10:00
Like the color of commenter Name
What about an ‘original comment’ box also at the bottom (after the last comment)? If I read the comments starting from the top to the last and I want to make a comment (not a reply), I have to scroll all the way to the beginning comment.
EDIT – Testing the ‘edit’ feature: my comment above is just an observation; don’t know if valid or useful, or not
This tab#1 is inverted or reversed with my comments shown on top.
Tab#2 that I am only using for monitoring has my comments at the bottom or normal position.
I will try refresh tab#1 after this post
Post time 10:05
After refreshing tab#1 my comments moved to bottom and thread is in normal set-up per previous WUWT format
Post time 10:08
Commenting now on tab #1
Not sure where this is going to go. I can’t refresh so see if I can comment.
Post time 10:55
Can’t cancel comment/reply to 10:05 and comment to 10:08. Seems if you pick a reply there’s no way to cancel.
Hope this helps
Post time 10:15
I’m forced to make a comment. Cant cancel or refresh this tab#1.
Tab#2 allowed a page refresh and all seems well there. Comments are in proper order on tab#2.
Post time 10:21
I’m replying on tab#2 this comment.
Tab#1 is ‘locked in’ now. I can’t refresh page. Comment before lock-up was 10:21
For what it’s worth I ‘m using Firefox.
Post time 10:49
Clicking on the ‘reply button’ a second time will allow you to escape the ‘reply’ function. Don’t believe the cancel option, it’s a crap button.
Post time 11:03
Hello, trying out the new comments system…
Liked it.
Except that now when a post exceeds more than a paragraph the comment goes into youtube mode where it is necessary to click “read more” to see the rest of the comment. Probably so annoying that i can already see it is not worth looking at the comments section unless one is willing to get a jackhammer to click all the “read more” interruptions.
Bad idea…and extremely annoying.
Very poor .
No way to run a comment section.
What a turn off.
Youtube did it and it failed.
Repels those who read comments.
Adds a lot of time and energy to investigating comments. From the point of view of a reader of comments, this is a very laborious system and so i fail to have the energy to approach a comment section when i need to reveal comments with a ‘read more’ button.
The usual scroll function of being able to scroll down the page is vastly more efficient.
Hence, the fail. I barely go to a comment section thus presented….I barely go to youtube comments since this “read more” button was deployed.
I suspect there are others, though not all, like me.
It amounts to a fail from my perspective and so unnecessary.
We all have a scroll button that can take us past and entire comment and even its replies without this “READ MORE” at light speed.
LOL, my previous comment now has a “read more” button ….OK….i have made my point…the ‘read more’ button in my opinion is an epic fail for the adept scroller, however, …….this is just my opinion..
Ah. “Keep my info” didn’t work on a reply, although I will try somewhere else. It DOES work on the top level.
One thing you might want to add is the standard notice that you do not make the email addresses public.
Yep, info keeping is not working on replies. Always fun…
EDIT – editing is apparently working.
Testing to fix ‘NAME’ from kokodda, to kokoda
A-OK (was concerned about not being allowed due to using same email address)
Seems appropriate for this cool change to WUWT!
Time For A Cool Change – Little River Band
https://youtu.be/9bKwRW0l-Qk
Not sure why the video image did not display there…. It leads with the https: ???
And after I hit the link, it disappeared (white on white). Did not come back by refreshing the page or going to ‘home’ and back again.
It appeared to be a mobile or app based youtube link. Try redoing it in desktop mode in a browser if on mobile.
That’s a shortened youtu.be redirector address not a YouTube URL.
The address you need to use is the [https://www·youtube·com/watch?v=9bKwRW0l-Qk&feature=youtu·be] I’ve put( · ) in for ( . )to stop it loading. OK?
tom,
Where did you find that link?
I clicked on the link (Linux middle button) and the system opened a new page, went to the youtu.be site, that redirected me to youtube which displayed the URL tom0 posted.
2nd attempt
Time For A Cool Change – Little River Band
https://youtu.be/9bKwRW0l-Qk
The link is there, but it is ‘white on white’, and no image???
3rd try…
Time For A Cool Change – Little River Band
This is my test comment.
the test video worked for me.
This is my test comment, number 2.
Sure glad this form is under antispam protection. Never did like that stuff, even in a sandwich.
Comment font is too small imho.
Kewl!
New comments are highlighted in yellow for easy finding. Cursor over them changes them to usual color.
Maybe I can forgive the links to social media.
The Edit function:
I tried to extend a comment with the Edit function. I just added one sentence and got
“Input Too Long”, and the edit was rejected.
Running an older version of Firefox (~ver. 43), under Linux.
A link test:
https://archive.org/stream/climate00mari#page/n1/mode/2up
Editing reply works fine.
By the way, the link is for “Climate & Health for You and Yours.”
2nd edit works fine, too.
Testing.
(I think I like it)
That video clip worked for me
Testing the formatting. Too bad there’s still no WSYWYG editor. Still stuck using limited HTML subset.
The 500 character limit will be interesting. Some of us post lengthy essays.
Hi Anthony……..I’m just testing this. After the recent update, a few of my input comments evaporated into cyberspace with a System 500 error, never to be seen again so I hope this one works! Anyway, let’s see!
Dr. Boris M. Smirnov, a prominent atomic physicist, has authored 20 physics textbooks during the last two decades. His latest scientific paper suggests that the traditional “absorption band” model for calculating the effect of atmospheric CO2 during the radiative transfer process is flawed. New calculations reveal that the climate’s sensitivity to a doubling of the CO2 concentration is just 0.4 K, and the human contribution to that value is a negligible 0.02 K.

(Trying to put people to sleep?) MOD
The scroll and even the “down the page” arrow on my keyboard was vastly more efficient than the “read more” click button to see your important data Tom.
Clicking the mouse to “read more” is very time consuming. Easier to just scroll to the important data.
Characters limited to 500?
That will be huge LimFac.
Ok, I can fix that
OK…….I found my recent comment after a few minutes delay which is heartening. However, I go with another poster’s comments in saying that the new format looks “busy” and the posting box at the top only is a real pain and bound to cause problems of multiple redundant comments! Personally, I preferred the old format but I realise you’re trying to improve things. Keep up the good work, sir! Thanks!
This is a comment from … well … me. As are all other comments.

I’m confused, are you saying that all comments are from you?

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
For evidence of ‘tipping points’ is utter nonsense see the complete political BS put out by the likes of CS Goldsmith here.. This sort of junk is what the deranged rich and powerful wish everyone to believe so that they can profit from your ignorant compliance.
If this is the same CS Goldsmith that works at CDC then shame on him, as he should be able to think logically, not just emote on Malthusian themes. It just goes to show that there is a tipping point, and it has tipped over in some peoples’ ability to think rationally, scientifically, or even logically.
RIP reblog button….
People think kittens are so cute when they run and jump on each other and play wrestle. Listen, these are Ambush predators and they are practicing learning how to kill.

They run and put their arms around the victim’s neck and bite the throat. While their hind legs claw out the intestines. That is a formula for success in the jungle.

And no image.
Looking back at some past comments, the text of href type links seems to have disappeared. A space remains, and if you click on the space, it links. But the anchor text has gone.
I’ll look into it
I think it is just a text color issue.
Here is a link to WUWT.
I think it is just in indented comments.
It seems white is the color for links already visited. Also hovered over.
I just noticed that this happened in one of my posts, the link is in white text so can’t be seen:

Getting involved on this thread has caused a bit of confusion to me, the dog, probably the neighbors cat and maybe even firefox. Anyone else? >?>??>?> Edited edition is same as original except for this edit.

Thanks Anthony! The update looks great! Congrats all around.
Also – an off-topic request (apologies): can you place the Search function in the Main menu? I’m not sure how to search for older posts
Sorry Anthony, but your new system completely trashed this entry adn probably every other entry I’ve made on wattsup – typically deleting url’s in a random manner so the article often makes no sense.
Here I have changed http to https and will comment on the results.

Notes for Judge Alsup – I’ve added a few points to my 2008 and 2015 papers.

PRESENTATION OF EVIDENCE SUGGESTING TEMPERATURE DRIVES ATMOSPHERIC CO2 MORE THAN CO2 DRIVES TEMPERATURE
By Allan M.R. MacRae, P.Eng., June 13, 2015
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2015/06/13/presentation-of-evidence-suggesting-temperature-drives-atmospheric-co2-more-than-co2-drives-temperature/
Observations and Conclusions:
1. Temperature, among other factors, drives atmospheric CO2 much more than CO2 drives temperature. The rate of change dCO2/dt is closely correlated with temperature and thus atmospheric CO2 LAGS temperature by ~9 months in the modern data record. The rate of change dCO2/dt vs. temperature plot follows:
https://www.woodfortrees.org/plot/esrl-co2/from:1979/mean:12/derivative/plot/uah5/from:1979/scale:0.22/offset:0.14
2. CO2 also lags temperature by ~~800 years in the ice core record, on a longer time scale.
3. Atmospheric CO2 lags temperature at all measured time scales.
4. CO2 is the feedstock for carbon-based life on Earth, and Earth’s atmosphere and oceans are clearly CO2-deficient. CO2 abatement and sequestration schemes are nonsense.
5. Based on the evidence, Earth’s climate is insensitive to increased atmospheric CO2 – there is no global warming crisis.
6. Recent global warming was natural and irregularly cyclical – the next climate phase following the ~20 year pause will probably be global cooling, starting by ~2020 or sooner.
7. Adaptation is clearly the best approach to deal with the moderate global warming and cooling experienced in recent centuries.
8. Cool and cold weather kills many more people than warm or hot weather, even in warm climates. There are about 100,000 Excess Winter Deaths every year in the USA and about 10,000 in Canada.
9. Green energy schemes have needlessly driven up energy costs, reduced electrical grid reliability and contributed to increased winter mortality, which especially targets the elderly and the poor.
10. Cheap, abundant, reliable energy is the lifeblood of modern society. When politicians fool with energy systems, real people suffer and die. That is the tragic legacy of false global warming alarmism.

ADDENDA:
A. RE POINT #1 ABOVE: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ~9-MONTH CO2 LAG AND THE AVERAGE ~36-MONTH TEMPERATURE CYCLE IN THE EQUATORIAL PACIFIC.
Introduction:
I proved in January 2008 that the rate-of-change dCO2/dt varies ~contemporaneously with global atmospheric temperature, and its integral the atmospheric CO2 trend lags temperature by ~9 months.
http://icecap.us/images/uploads/CO2vsTMacRae.pdf
– See Figures 1 and 3
The integral of a sine curve lags the sine curve by 90 degrees, which equals 1/4 of the 360 degree full cycle.
CO2 lags temperature by about 9 months, therefore this total cycle time should be about 4×9 = 36 months.
Hypothesis:
This approx. 36 month cycle is the Equatorial Pacific Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Cycle and the Global Temperature cycle.
Equatorial Pacific Ocean SST’s and global atmospheric temperatures have a natural temperature cycle (peak-to-peak) averaging about 36 months peak-to-peak.
For example, based on UAH LT temperature peaks, the mean cycle is 36.3 months and the lag is 9.1 months vs the approx. 9 months in my 2008 icecap.us paper.
The above Hypothesis is supported by the evidence.
B. GLOBAL ATMOSPHERIC TEMPERATURES CLOSELY FOLLOW EQUATORIAL PACIFIC OCEAN TEMPERATURES WITH A 4-to-6 MONTH LAG
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2018/04/28/solar-activity-flatlines-weakest-solar-cycle-in-200-years/comment-page-1/#comment-2803244
Summary:
The Equatorial Pacific Ocean has a natural Sea Surface Temperature cycle averaging about 36 months peak-to-peak.
Equatorial average air temperature and humidity follow Equatorial Pacific Ocean temperature – about 3 months after the Nino34 SST Anomaly and about 5 months after the East Equatorial Upper Ocean Temperature Anomaly.
Global average air temperature follows Equatorial average air temperature and humidity about 1 month later – about 4 months after the Nino34 SST Anomaly and about 6 months after the East Equatorial Upper Ocean Temperature Anomaly.

“Highlights:
– Changes in global atmospheric CO2 are lagging 11–12 months behind changes in global sea surface temperature.
– Changes in global atmospheric CO2 are lagging 9.5–10 months behind changes in global air surface temperature.
– Changes in global atmospheric CO2 are lagging about 9 months behind changes in global lower troposphere temperature.
– Changes in ocean temperatures explain a substantial part of the observed changes in atmospheric CO2 since January 1980.
– Changes in atmospheric CO2 are not tracking changes in human emissions.”

D. CONCLUSIONS:
I suggest that the global warming alarmists could not be more wrong. These are the true facts, which are opposite to their alarmist claims:
1. CO2 is plant food, and greater atmospheric CO2 is good for natural plants and also for agriculture.
2. Earth’s atmosphere is clearly CO2-deficient and the current increase in CO2 (whatever the causes) is net strongly beneficial.
3. Increased atmospheric CO2 does not cause significant global warming – regrettable because the world is too cold and about to get colder.

Interesting. But it doesn’t help for short comments.
Hi again Anthony and Moderators:
I changed all http to https and your new Comments system still deleted many urls, while displaying some of them.
Also, most of the url’s that did appear did not work but instead displayed error messages.
If it helps to diagnose problems, let me know and I will email you the full post – it is difficult to diagnose here because parts of it are just gone – url’s deleted – and most of the url’s that do appear no longer work – instead get error messages.
So my original comment stands – this post is trashed by your new Comments system – and probably also every other long post I have made on wattsup, where I often support my claims and/or shorten my posts with supporting url’s.
If I am doing something wrong then let me know – but I have to assume that all my previous long posts that include url’s have been similarly trashed.
Best personal regards, Allan

Checking my article on wattsup from June 2015, it appears the vertical spacing is messed up. I presume this is the new server and not the new Comments gadget.

Hate it so far Anthony, but maybe I just don’t understand all the features.
How do you record a link in your own records to your post so you can refer to or find your post later?
So far this system has trashed my older posts, dropping urls irregularly, messing up line spacing, paragraphs, figures, etc.
It has features I will never use, and drops the ones I do use.
Apologies – this has put me in a really bad mood – I think I will now go and kick the cat.
How do you record a link in your own records to your post so you can refer to or find your post later?
There is an icon to the right of your name representing two links in a chain.
Click it, then try to navigate around the stupid social networking icons that pop up over the URL so that you get get a cursor on the URL,
then swipe the URL with your mouse, copy it,
paste it into your address bar and save it as favorite/bookmark.
.e.g: direct link to your comment:

Gosh you are being difficult. Link icon is in the upper right has permanent URL for the comment. As for your dislikes, well sorry, can’t please everybody.
I see no evidence your comments are being trashed, none at all.

where is ‘ghostery’
Ghostery for either Chrome or Firefox is an add on. I am giving up on Firefox though, and sticking with Chrome. Gostery gives great control over trackers on all sites, except for here where it is best to disable it. It speeds up page loading quite a bit when it shows you which tracker is impeding the page the most. You then block that one and a page may go from 6 or 8 seconds down to 2 or 3 seconds on loading. Quite a nice difference, imo.

Testing a tweet link…
First, here’s what the link looks like (mobile version, with some zero-width spaces inserted so WordPress won’t recognize it as a URL):
https://mobile.twitter.com/DrAndreaDutton/status/1002949534597746690
This is the mobile version:
https://mobile.twitter.com/DrAndreaDutton/status/1002949534597746690
This is the non-mobile version (same URL as mobile version, but with the “mobile.” deleted):
https://twitter.com/DrAndreaDutton/status/1002949534597746690
Well, that’s not good. ☹️
Hmmm… it doesn’t update the URL in the address bar, either, though I guess the link symbol 🔗 feature is almost as good.
“ ” works properly to add an extra line of space—that’s a good thing—one of my favorite little formatting tricks, in fact.
OK, I’ll use this opportunity to ask a question I always want to ask.
Am I wrong in the following statement about Einstein’s equivalence principle — and, if so, where I am wrong?
Rocket acceleration and gravitational acceleration are different things, there is no equivalence between them if the observer uses precision plumb lines and atomic clocks. If one installs three plumb lines on the ceiling of the windowless experimental chamber, and two atomic clocks, one on the ceiling and one on the floor of the same experimental chamber, under rocket acceleration of 1g plumb lines will be parallel, and atomic clocks will be synchronous. Under gravitational acceleration of 1g plumb lines will point at the center of the mass (not parallel), and the atomic clock on the ceiling will be ahead of the clock on the floor.
Where’s equivalence here?
P.S. Editing works!
The atomic clocks are each experiencing different accelerations because their distance r to the center of the Earth is different. The clock closer to the center has more acceleration due to gravity on it, and thus it runs slower.
If you saw the movie Interstellar, they use this trick where 3 astronauts go into deep gravity well planet for only a few hours by their clock, yet their companion who stays outside the well ages like 15 years.
Atomic clocks exeriencing the same force due to gravitational acceleration will not measure any time dilation due to differences in how fast they tick. And if that force is due to linear (or centripetal) acceleration, the clock will not show any delta t.
Centripetal acceleration also has GR effects known as frame dragging. Frame dragging has been observationally verified with satellites and I think in paired magnetars.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame-dragging
What you are describing is tidal force. WIth those two clocks spaced at different r from center of Earth, thus the force due to gravity is different, and solid objects get stretched (because they are extended bodies) by tidal forces and not mathematical points.
Black holes with sharp event horizons “spaghetti-fy’s” matter as it enters due to tidal stretching. Not pretty if you are an astronaut approaching the event horizon. An extremely massive black hole though the tidal forces may be so low that matter can survive event horizon passage. No one in this universe knows what comes next.
As far as the difference in line spacing between plumb lines at the top and at the bottom near the plumb, that has nothing to do with GR. One problem with your experimental setup is the top bar the strings are attached to is linear, not curved. So the center line is closer to the ground than the two outer lines, unless you curve the top bar to the produce the same r from the center of Earth. The lines still would not be parallel though. That is the geometry of the forces.
Importantly though the tension (force) on all three strings though is equivalent if the plumb bob masses are equivalent whether the acceleration is due to gravity or linear acceleration.
Thank you very much for your explanation.
Since the pace of time indicated by atomic clocks depends on the distance from the center of mass, there is a difference in their readings. In the case of rocket acceleration there would be no such difference. Therefore, there is an experimental way to determine the nature of acceleration (gravitational vs. rocket-produced)? Even if there are no other means to observe or establish this result (in otherwise identical conditions)? Do I understand it correctly?
I must be getting old; I hate change.

Ugh!
I tried to post a long comment, a reply to my own comment. It didn’t seem to work. It did the “Knight Rider back-and-forth wait thing” and then… nothing. I was still looking at the bottom half of my long comment.
Tried a few more times, with the same result.
Eventually I scrolled up in just time to see a very brief error message at the top of my comment, which was just disappearing as I glimpsed it:
We are sorry, but this comment cannot be posted. Please try later.
This commenting system is pretty bad, from a usability point of view. Look at all the problems with that behavior:
1. The error message is far from where your eyes are focused: the “Post comment” button is at the bottom of the comment, but the error message is at the top — which is hidden off the screen under some circumstances.
2. The error message goes away almost before you have time to read it. In fact, it took about 3 or 4 tries to selected it and copy to clipboard fast enough to catch it.
3. An error message which doesn’t say what is wrong, nor what to do about it. (Well, it says what to do about it (“try later”), but that advice is wrong.)
I spent the next twenty minutes of so trying to narrow down the cause of the problem.
The actual problem turned out to be that my original comment was gone!
I guess that’s an artifact of the malfunctioning new anti-spam feature. So, more problems:
4. It flagged non-spam as spam. (But Akismet often did this, too.)
5. It hid the message, without telling the user. (Akismet did this, too, but at least with Akismet you could tell that it had happened.)
6. It wouldn’t let me post a repy to it, and didn’t say why not, and wasted a bunch of my time trying to figure it out.
It is also annoying that you see only a small snippet of a comment until clicking “Read more” — and the formatting is mangled in that small snippet.
And why is the text size so tiny in the replies?
I like the long edit time. I dislike the lack of a countdown timer. I typed an elaborate edit, but when I tried to post it I got an error:
Sorry, this comment no longer possible to edit
So, the 15 minute timer runs silently, and it doesn’t reset when you post an edit. In other words, if you make an edit at 10 minutes, you only have 5 minutes left to make another edit. That’s not ideal for OCD guys who want to keep tweaking the comment and inspecting the result, to get it just right.
Here’s what I was trying to test (in my rejected “edit,” above). I was trying to make tweets non-invisible.
First, I showed what I was going to enter (with zero-width spaces added, and < as <, to prevent WordPress’s magic, so you can read it):
<a href=”https://mobile.twitter.com/DrAndreaDutton/status/1002949534597746690″>https://mobile.twitter.com/DrAndreaDutton/status/1002949534597746690</a>
And here it is without the obfuscation:
https://mobile.twitter.com/DrAndreaDutton/status/1002949534597746690
And her’s the non-mobile version:
https://twitter.com/DrAndreaDutton/status/1002949534597746690
And here’s the non-mobile version with zero-length spaces obfuscating only the inner URL:
https://twitter.com/DrAndreaDutton/status/1002949534597746690
And here’s a simpler attempt: the non-mobile version with the “https://” deleted from the inner URL ((instead of inserting zero-length spaces to obfuscate it):
https://twitter.com/DrAndreaDutton/status/1002949534597746690
Well, how about that?
When it flags a comment for moderation (“Comment awaiting moderation”) the warning flag it’s nice and visible — but there’s no “edit” button. (There’s also no “reply” button, but that’s reasonable.)
Ah yes, was going to mention that. I think my comment in currently waiting moderation. But I can’t find it. Probably way down below after I hit the ‘Load More Comments’ button! Hmm, dunno if I like that either.

So the “invisible link” problem is apparently not specific to twitter links. It’s all links.
To the person who posted a comment, the links in his own comment are invisible, though they still work when clicked. Here’s a screenshot of this comment:
But if you “select” them, they’re really there:
And for everyone else the links are visible, except that they disappear when hovered over with the mouse (view in a “Private” or “Incognito” window to see this behavior in your own comments):
Hmm… I think the difference isn’t “your own” vs. “other people.” I think the difference might be “visited” vs. “not visited.” The “visited” links are white-on-white (invisible).
And the mouseovered unvisited links.
Just a few stylesheet changes.
I see that this problem is now resolved.
This is an experiment (this .png image file has a transparent background):

Ooooooooooo…….Look. I can edit!
Not sure I like the edit function, much more fun deciphering peoples digit malfunctions.
Editing again.
Does anyone know if the edit function rolls over. i.e. If my first edit allows 15 minutes, if I go in and edit again, does it reset the clock?
Stupid question?
hot scot,
I dont think it resets the clock but seems that you can do as many ‘edits’ as you want until the clock runs out. The real kicker is that your posted comment is visible on the WUWT page while you are editing and then changes after you save it after edit. Fun part is you can make the WUWT page visible comment keep changing for those viewing your comment! Cuttlefish got nothing on the edit function!
I think generally the system is better than it ever was with a few exceptions.
1. The inability to post images or videos directly is a huge loss.
2. The formatting style sheet I would personally like to see fine tuned.
For example
(a) the default ‘blue’ colour in WUWT is rgb(17, 123, 184) but in the comments it’s a wishy washy (to me) rgb(0, 179, 143)….
(b) Also the font size changes a shade too much from comment to reply.
(c) The blockquote style is just an indent rather than a nice shaded box.
But the ability to edit is a massive massive improvement for someone like myself whose typing skills are very low.
If only we could post pictures and graphs…and videos

Anthony ==> I like the “Read More….” feature — it solves the problem of “essay-length” comments pushing other comments way off the bottom of the page and taking lots of PgDn’s to get past.
I also like that the original comments are easily distinguished from the replies to them — easier to identify the threads.
Is this where I put the obligatory “How dare you post any article that isn’t about Global Warming” comment?
Nesting appears to work on my mobile Firefox, but in a limited way. I didn’t realise until I got to work that comment threads aren’t visibly fully nested on mobile. They are limited to the screen width, so at least the problem with the original implementation–horribly narrow comments that are quite a pain to read–isn’t present. Not ideal, but I’m not sure what can be done for a phone screen. I don’t think I see the same problem with white link text on my phone, though.
Edit: trying to find your own comment after you post and refresh…also not optimal, when it’s three or four “Load More Comments” down the page and you’re set to read “oldest first”.
Anthony ==> Two “suggestions”
1. If possible, add a link to the html at the end of comments that links to a same-page anchor set just below the grey bar that has left and right previous post — next post (it is just above the current “Leave A Reply”) This would allow readers reading all the comments to click a “Leave a Comment” link that takes them right back up to Leave a Reply form at the beginning of comments. *since it is apparently not possible to move that form).
2. If possible, add at the end of comments — where (if there are scads of comments) it gives a Load More Comments (something like that) — and alternate link –Load All Comments.
PS: I like that comments I haven’t seen appear with a shaded background.
First, I don’t mind the New Comment box being at the top rather than the bottom, as I’ll get used to it.
Second, unlike some other commentators, I do mind having to click anything to read more of a comment or read more comments. I like to be quick on the PgDn button and ignore things I’m not interested in. There is a good ergonomic reason for this: it is more relaxing just to have a finger on one key than to have to move the cursor to follow a page button. Relaxation makes for better information input.
Rich.
Third, I don’t like not seeing an exact time of someone’s quote, as it has been useful in the past to quote this.
Fourth, as a result of that it is hard even to tell the direction of travel of the whole thread.
Fifth, how does one click on something to get a bookmarkable link to a particular comment rather than to the whole thread? That was extremely valuable in the past.
So far the plusses don’t outweigh the minusses IMHO.
Rich.
Sixth, as I age my eyesight is worsening, so I don’t appreciate diminishing text size with indented comments.
Rich.
If you click on the little symbol that looks like two chain links at the top right corner of a post, it will give the link to that post.
MarkW,
Please explain the chain link. I can’t see what it does, just opens a box w/WUWT address
Post time 12:28 pm
The box is smaller than the address so it doesn’t all show up, I did a Ctrl-A Cntr-C on the box for your post and got this:

Mark,
I’m replying to my comment that you answered to keep it all together.
I clicked the link you provided and nothing happened except that the link vanished but mouse pointer turns to a hand if I mouse over the its previous location.
What is the chain link supposed to do?
This comment posted 1:26 p
OK ——– I think I see what the chain link does. It just highlights the associated sub thread in colored boxes and if you mouse over the colored box the color goes away.
Is that all it’s supposed to do? If so, it may have some value but doesn’t seem too much to get excited about.

I need to get a foot controlled “refresh button” and a “scroll pedal” to attempt to follow along without wearing out my keyboard and finger tips! A new meaning to an interactive process! The local peeping tom will think I’m nuts with fancy foot work, typing, mousing, and facial expressions and cursing! 😉

I used the chain box on your first post to me to acquire the link that I put in the above post.
When I click on the link, it takes me to your first post.
PS: Is there any way to fix the color on the clicked links. Having them appear to disappear is very difficult to work with.
Mark,
If you are asking me, I can only say that the colored link disappears when you mouse over it and is then permanently invisible once you open/click on it. If you know where it was you can still click the invisible/blank spot to open it.
posted at 3:43p
I think the answer to EVERYTHING in the new universe is to refresh and scroll. Now what is the question?
What is “42” is not a valid question as the answer would be “refresh and scroll and reset and scroll some more”. 😉

OK …. The colored links are now remaining visible when you mouse over and also remain visible even after you have opened/clicked on it . The march for normalcy and perfection continues. 😉 😉
I prefer to have the newest posts at the top, is there any way to permanently select this option?
A little change every now and then can be a good thing, don’t you think Mr Ryan?

Testing
I tried to post under my old handle (TA) and got this error message: “Please match the requested format”.
That’s all it gave me with no instructions about what the requested format is. So I emailed Anthony and he said this was the first he had heard of this problem and didn’t know what to do to fix it and suggested I use my name instead of my initials. I did so and it looks like it worked.
I know others use a two-letter, capitalized handle, too, so if you are having trouble posting it probably has something to do with your two-letter handle.
Any update on Tips and Notes functioning?
Testing…
Whoof, the “subscribe to new follow-up” emails are ugly, and randomly have no information in them.
Now to try the “subscribe to replies.” And see if it sends my own. 🙂
I am posting comments too quickly; slow down.
Not so good at that….changing speed is hard!
Just another test. Will clicking on my name get me to Walking Creek World (one of my blogs)?
Here’s a picture:

The characters under the photo seem to be left over from the URL. How come the program didn’t remember me?
While the image seems a little distorted, the reflections are clear! Kind of like many things in life. 😉
It’s displayed upside down. Please stand on your head.
?? New comments remember my name/website. Replies do not. How come?
I just “liked” you because you sounded like you needed a hug. 😎

Interesting commenting system. I wonder if it will work at a site other than WP powered!
Hmmm, mods, earlier on I made 3 postings with items “first”, “second”, …, “sixth”, and I cannot see them. Do you know where they went?
Thanks,
Rich.
My apologies – apparently I had “oldest” set opposite “Subscribe”, and when I fixed that to be “newest” I could see my comments. So,
Seventh, I’d like to see an option “all” next to “newest”.
Both “newest” and “oldest” display “all”. They just impact the order.
I haven’t played with “most voted”.
Hi Mark W,
If that were true then searching for my comments under “oldest” would have succeeded. So probably one has to “load more comments” first, but that is what “all” would do automatically.
Rich.
Rich,
I can see first and second, then third, then sixth about 4 hours ago.
So far it takes a lot of refreshing and finding where you were in the thread.
Try this: refresh, then make sure the little green ^ (to the right of the time clock) has not collapsed the sub threaded comments.
AW is likely working on bigger programming issues and I’m sure he will get to the others as time permits. It’s driving me nuts but including the time of your posting will help you keep track, it did with me.
When all else fails just refresh again and again. A second open tab for “monitoring only” also helps.
Excuse me while I go kick the neighbors cat again! 😉
I see that we crossed while I was replying to you.
Every time you post (and maybe refresh) you will need to reset the “newest/oldest” button as it will default back to “oldest”
Does your neighbor have a cat? 😉
OK eyesonu, thanks. That brings me to:
eighth: wouldn’t it be nice if refresh in the browser did not reset choices like newest/oldest etc.?
Rich.
Rich,
yes ….. Give AW time …. if it can be done he will get ‘er done. Notice that comment times are now posted. It will be done on Earth as it will be in WUWT.
Posting time not required except for time zone difference. Thanks AW!!!!!

Excellent progress, Anthony!
Thank you for all you do.
This is a great site and now it is better.
The main practical issue I have is the truncation of the thread. You have to ask for “More Comments” and then again. That makes searching hard. One way I find replies is by searching for my name. It also is rather strange when a new comment shows as highlighted, and then disappears to the end. It’s true that you can now re-order them, but that breaks logical sequence. It’s also illogical, in that old comments indented can appear on the first page. I think if options to reorder are given, it should also be possible to show whole thread.
Truncating comments (“Read More”) also affects searching, to a lesser extent.
Yes, Nick, your comments echo my second (read more) and seventh (“all” needed) points, and I also mentioned searching for my own comments.
My first attempt.
I’ll try to reply to myself afterward to see what happens.
I might even try to like myself to see what happens.
(Somehow, that last line doesn’t sound quite right. 😎
Well, I’m not allowed to like myself. 8-(
But I guess that’s good for the blog.
I notice that when I close a parenthesis with a “text” 8 (glasses) – (nose) ) smile it shows up as a smiley wearing sunglasses.
No problem. I’ll just have to keep that in mind and do something like this “(comment 8-))”.
Hmm…It want’s my name and email again. It used to remember me after the first comment.
Is it still supposed too?
My comments are at top even though “oldest” is highlighted.
The “edit” time isn’t up? Maybe that’s why it doesn’t remember me (since these are my first comments)?
A last test (for now).
I’ll try to link to my first comment.
wattsupwiththat.com
Looks like that didn’t work.
But I don’t see a “cancel reply” option?
Perhaps this isn’t in your control but, a gray line appears under the commenter’s name.
If there have been not replies, the next commenter’s name look’s like a bit like signature.
If it is in your control, perhaps move the grey line above the name?
just click on the ‘reply’ button again to escape the reply mode.
One more note on escaping the ‘reply’ function. When you have been frustrated with getting trapped by ‘reply’ and then click a different ‘reply’ now you are in double jeopardy. Now you gotta find ’em all and get out of multiple locks. That is FUN. Or as usual …. refresh, reset, and scroll.
I sure hope I’m not making anyone miss out on the mystery of the chase by revealing the conclusion. People have been killed over that in the movie theaters. Mystery and suspense awaits every new gadget and keystroke! 🙂
Gunga Din,
Try refreshing to get your comment to go where it belongs. I have a comment thread somewhere in this posting explaining it. The key as it stands now (or earlier) is to refresh, scroll, reset order, and then scroll some more to find your comment.
Also to use the Ctrl F function you need to scroll and click through ALL the ‘load more comments’ to get full thread coverage.
The whole site has become scrambled when I use Pale Moon (my preferred browser) today – it wasn’t like that when you first migrated to the new servers. Unable to even submit a comment. Forced to use Chrome to tell you about it.
Sorry, but we can’t help if if obscure browsers don’t support what mainstream browsers like Chrome do…
I am now receiving two emails for every post. It is no problem, just wondering why
Me too, John.
Heads up for those who use “Ctrl F” to search a post’s comments, unless you hit “load more comments” (perhaps again and again), you’ll only get hits for the comments in the range you can scroll down too.
Yes, that’s a bit problematic – I’m always using the Cntrl>F function.
That’s why I earlier asked for an “All” option and not just “Oldest” and “Newest”.
… testing a comment and an image:
Image not working, and it’s asking for my name, email, website again, as I try to reply to my own comment
It would be nice if the time stamp for a reply was in the time zone of the person reading it instead of PST. Was the same on the old blog.
This is a test. This is only a test. Had this been an actual emergency …
I don’t know if it has anything to do with all the work that is currently going on but when I opened my email Inbox tonight, I found there were two of every WUWT email?
Hey, a “Like” button?
Zowie!
And one that tallies up and down votes into one number too!
And the big and most appreciated change?
An “Edit” function!
Thank you so much for all of your hard work Anthony Watts!
With an edit button, perhaps we should make a note when we have to edit our posts, maybe just a sentence saying that the comment was edited for clarity or for typos. whichever the case may be?
Testing pictures hosted at Facebook:
I just now tried out the ‘chain link’ function to the far right of commenter’s name.
If you click on the link button nothing happens until you refresh (of course). That will move the sub thread (beginning with the linked commenter) to the top of the main comments page in the posting. But, of course, the newest/oldest will be reset to default ‘oldest’. The linked comments will be highlighted in colored boxes. if you mouse over one of those the color will vanish. So if you want to keep the color be sure that you don’t let your mouse cross the box. If you want to remove the color just scroll right over the sub-thread and it will be gone (the color). Then when you want the linked sub-thread to go back where it belongs well… you guessed it … refresh, reset order, and scroll baby scroll ’till ya get back where you want to be.
By the way, the colored boxes using the ‘chain link’ will be nice when the bugs are worked out.
Don’t know if it matters after the fact, but when you implemented the new comment system, it appeared on all the older posts, also. And at that point I had to re-enter my vitals. All done now.
I really like the edit option. Usually I just need to add a comma or other punctuation, but reading it after posting, I always see something wrong which I can now correct. And I have already used it. THANKS!
I just noticed another problem with the new system, and it’s a serious one: The comment URLs in old articles are broken.
For example, this was the URL of a comment which I made last summer about the benefits of elevated CO2 for CAM plants (like pineapple):
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/08/17/study-global-warming-will-cut-crop-yields-assuming-no-adaption/#comment-2584113
That link no longer works.
The equivalent “wordpress dot com” URL still works:
https://wattsupwiththat.wordpress.com/2017/08/17/study-global-warming-will-cut-crop-yields-assuming-no-adaption/#comment-2584113
But for the imported copy of the article, in the new system, the comment has a changed URL, which breaks all the old links to it. Here’s the new URL:
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2017/08/study-global-warming-will-cut-crop-yields-assuming-no-adaption/#comment-2132389
Anthony, can this be fixed???
Testing to see whether this gets my name right. At some sites WordPress changes me to “jhborn.”
Below the comment-entry box it correctly says “Joe Born,” but that’s not what shows up when I post.
Still doesn’t work right.
I’d like to reiterate my “second” point from below about the “Read more” issue. If we have to have such a thing, could we make it a larger amount of text before the “Read more”? I presume that this should be some configuration setting? I’d suggest twice as much as at present. How about having a WUWT vote on what the limit should be?
Rich.
YES!
I’d like the option to just disable the “Read more” and “Load more comments” features, altogether. I can see that such features could be useful when reading on a mobile device, but on a desktop computer they’re are just a nuisance.
And testing
Everything seems to be working now.
Hey!
wpDiscuz Devs are here… Thanks for trying wpDiscuz.
First I’d suggest decrease the number of parent post for the first load to make he page load even more faster. More info about the comment pagination control: https://wpdiscuz.com/docs/wpdiscuz-documentation/settings/comment-list-settings/#pagination
The [Load More] pagination type is the best choice.
Second, I’d suggest using the collapsed thread option, it makes x10 faster the first page loading speed:
https://wpdiscuz.com/docs/wpdiscuz-documentation/settings/comment-list-settings/#view-replies
I’d also recommend set the “newest” sorting type by default. I think the newest comments should be close to the comment form and people should see the latest comments first. wpDiscuz only displays comment form on top, so the newest comments should also be on top.
When I tried to use the ‘chain link’ to link to a specific post in a thread it now shows the whole thread. I’ll see if it does it again here.
