Athletic women likely to have more sexual partners

Sporty women notch up many more lovers than couch potatoes, research says.

They are 73 percent more likely to have slept with at least 10 partners than those who shun exercise. The findings were published in BMJ Sexual & Reproductive Health.

Experts believe being part of a sports club or team may give them a greater chance of meeting a partner.

Drinkers and smokers were also more than twice as likely to have 10-plus lovers compared to abstainers — possibly due to risk-taking tendencies.

Around one in five men said they had double-digit conquests, compared with one in 12 women.

Men in the bottom and top earnings brackets also had most partners.

Female bisexuals and homosexual men are also more likely to have had a higher-than-average number of sexual partners.

Scientists at Anglia Ruskin University studied relationship data for nearly 7,000 over-50s, to explore the factors associated with the numbers of lifetime sexual partners they had.

They hope the findings can help GPs “identify individuals who are at greatest risk of STIs and their associated health complications.”
