Conroy Raises Awareness of Pay Equity Day, Reaffirms Commitment to Equal Pay

VILLA PARK, Ill. – State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, is calling attention to the gender wage gap by recognizing April 10 as Pay Equity Day and sponsor new legislation aimed at closing the wage gap.

“The fight for equal pay for equal work has been going on for decades and it is far from over,” said Conroy. “Pay Equity Day reminds us how much work we have left to ensure true equality in the workplace.”

Women earn roughly 80 cents on the dollar compared to men, a number that is even lower for women of color. House Resolution 787 designates April 10, 2018 as Pay Equity Day. April 10 represents how far into the current year a woman must work to make the same salary as a man in the previous year. Conroy is sponsoring House Bill 4163 to close the wage gap and prevent employers from asking prospective employees provide information on previous salary or pay, a move that proponents argue only further solidifies the gender pay gap.

“The issue of pay equity is one that will require bipartisan support and collaboration,” Conroy said. “This bill is an important step in closing the pay equity gap and I encourage my colleagues to be on the right side of history and support this legislation.”
