Steve Kerr: Moments of Silence 'Are the Reality' Until Gun Control Is Addressed

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr is once again calling for gun control legislation after Wednesday's shooting in Thousand Oaks, California.

"We'll have a moment of silence tonight. We had a moment of silence last week. We'll probably have a moment of silence next week," Kerr explained, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic. "That's the reality until we do something about it."

Kerr—who has led the Warriors to three NBA titles in the last four years—has been outspoken about political issues throughout his coaching career, but few topics have gotten his attention as much as guns.

He spoke about gun control last month after 11 people were shot and killed at the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue near Pittsburgh, via Chris Korman of USA Today:

"Everybody has their own issues that are important to them. My personal issue is gun safety, gun control. Nobody in this country should have a semi-automatic weapon of war. That's my personal belief. So I'm going to vote for every candidate that's willing to stand up to the NRA and say 'You know what, this is insane.' We're murdering each other everyday. We have to get rid of bump stocks, we have to get rid of high-capacity magazines, we have to get rid of semi-automatic weapons. We just do. Other countries don't go through this."

He also had strong statements in favor of changes to laws following shootings in Florida, Texas and Las Vegas among others over the past few years.

The 53-year-old has a personal connection to gun violence as his father was shot and killed in 1984.

While the moments of silence are signs of respect, it's clear Kerr wants to see something else done to potentially prevent these situations in the future.
