The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, has urged the police to prioritize the health and safety of Sen. Dino Melaye before prosecution.

Dogara made the call at the plenary on Thursday in Abuja after a personal explanation was raised by Rep. Sunday Karimi (Kogi-PDP) drawing the attention of the House to Dino’s plight.

The senator is currently facing a seven-count charge of criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms in Kogi State.

The helmsman of the green chambers, however, said that anyone who committed any offence must face the law.

The speaker said he had not seen any country where anybody had been arraigned in court on stretchers.

“I have not seen in any country where someone is arraigned in court on stretchers when he or she is not fit to plead guilty or not guilty.

“If anything happens to him, (Dino) the responsibility will be on the security agency,” he said.

Earlier, speaking under personal explanation, Karimi said in the process of arresting and transporting Dino from Abuja to Lokoja by the police, the lawmaker was involved in an accident and was hospitalised.

Karimi said that he counted no fewer than 36 policemen guarding the hospital where Dino was receiving treatment.

He said Dino, who had yet to fully recover, was being tried while still on stretcher.

According to him, Dino is being persecuted for his political believe and what is happening to him can happen to any of us.

“I appeal to the house to look at the issue and make sure due process is followed,” he said. (NAN)

How many people have died in police custody, yet the House or Senate never did anything about it? How many have died in prisons while awaiting trial or judgment?

Why is it that only the political class of Nigeria are citizens with rights and privileges, while the ordinary tax paying Nigerian does not even have his fundamental human rights respected by the organs of government?

Let Dino Melaye go to Prison while on trial, as a fact finding mission, and use that firsthand experience to promote civilized laws in the national assembly, for the good of all Nigerians that will have any encounter with the police, the courts and the prisons.

Or why is it so hard for our political leaders to realise that Nigerians are being treated as victims in their own country? Why is it so hard for Dogora or Saraki or Buhari to demand that a certain John Doe who has died extra judiciously in police custody or even in illegal military custody, is an aberration that must never be tolerated in a democratic republic?

The day government leaders would care about the rights of the unknown Nigerian, that is the day the country will work for all such that Dogora would not need to remind the police of the rights of a notable politician.

An injury to a serving senator is not the test of the efficacy of our democracy.

Rather, an injury to the unknown yet responsible Nigerian citizen is the test of our democracy's efficacy.

Have our political and government leaders cared to make this democracy work for the regular Nigerian citizen who have become victims while the leaders are the only citizens in the setup?

A serving senator being a public servant, should be treated as the ordinary Nigerian is treated by the police like a criminal despite no conviction, humiliated daily in civilian public by the military, treated as a statistic by the courts who remand and adjourn without regard to humanity, and easily lynched by the barbaric mob who have embraced their status of not having rights.

The day the ordinary Nigerian is treated well in a republic and a democracy, an accused senator can also hope to be treated as well as the Nigerian citizen.

The day the ordinary Nigerian enjoys the rights already duly accorded by the constitution, then will our democracy not be under attack.

If an accused senator feels under attack, let his cult of fellow selfish and uncaring lawmakers make laws for the benefit of all Nigerians who daily experience such attacks.

Our democracy would be better because all enjoy rights, and not because a senator already accorded the courtesies not afforded the proletariat, attempts to extend such rights as being above the law after suspicion of involvement in breaking the law.

Everytime a VIP gets prosecuted, we connect it with politics, if they don’t get prosecuted, we shout that only the poor gets that treatment. How many people in this country are insulting Buhari more than Dino but are walking around freely?
Does Dino even insult Buhari?

All he does is his legislative duty which I personally believe if done right is in order. Every president needs sane legislators to check mate his/her excesses. But I see a lot connecting Buhari to Dino’s plight. May be we want him to stop it.

Mum: So when are you having a baby? I need grandchildren

Another empty threat from these set of overfed weaklings. IGP Idris knows better.

This 8th Assembly is at best a toothless bulldog that can only bark and not bite. Not surprised tho, their hands are soiled and they cannot come to equity with such soiled hands.
