The Home Ministry informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that eleven proposals from States to rename villages are pending with it. The proposals are from Rajasthan, Haryana, Nagaland, Maharashtra and M.P.

The Rajasthan government moved proposal to rename three Muslim sounding villages in Chittorgarh, the epicentre of protests by Rajput groups against the Hindi film Padmavat earlier this year. The Vasundhara Raje-led government proposed to change the name of village Mohammadpura to Meri Ka Khera, Nawabpura to Nai Sarthal and Rampura Azampura to Sitaramji Ka Khera.

It also proposed to change the name of village Salemabad in Ajmer district to Shrinimbark Tirth and village Chor Baori in Udaipur district to Vijay Baori.

In Haryana, the proposals for name change are for village Lula Ahir in Rewari to Krishan Nagar, Bal Ragdan in Karnal to Bal Rajputan and village Kutia Kheri in Hisar to Veerpur.

MHA has given its ‘No Objection’ to rename 22 villages, towns and railway stations since December 2017.
