Visit These Black-Owned Coffee Shops Around the US

Worried that your local Starbucks might call the cops on you because of your race? Want to show that you care how the company treats black customers? Want to give your money to a black owned small business instead of an $83-billion corporation? Business site Shoppe Black lists 47 cafés with black owners across the United States.

There are plenty of reasons outside “stick it to Starbucks” to support your local black owned coffee shops. So ctrl-F for your city on Shoppe Black’s list. And check the results in their comments too, where readers have named dozens more coffee shops (and where you can name more).

It’s pathetic that over 80 years after Victor H. Green created the Negro Traveler’s Green Book to help black travelers avoid trouble from racist business owners, customers can still feel unsafe at a business—even a generally progressive national chain—because of their race. Starbucks knows this, which is why they’re running a chain-wide racial-bias education session for their employees. But whether or not they ever get their house in order, you can feel proud supporting an independent and black owned business instead. (And the coffee will probably taste better.)
