Dog is smart. Escalators are SUPER dangerous to dogs (any animals really).

u/TAI0Z avatar

And, in China, to people.

Ok I didn't know what you were talking about so I googled "escalator china".

Holy shit that is scary.

u/aaaaaaaarrrrrgh avatar

"Fun" fact: Escalators move at a constant speed.

A dozen people weigh about a metric ton. A full escalator still moves at the same speed. An escalator does not slow down if you add several metric tons of additional load to it.

Now think what that means in case someone gets in the way of the escalator.

Thanks, I hate it.

It's 2020 ffs. If we don't have some kind of fail-safe detection system for escalators by now, then we probably deserve to be fucked by climate change.

And escalators hates you :o

Goolge “China” and “Collapse” and it will give you literally anything.

I shouldn’t have looked that up after seeing this comment—. I had a fear of escalators a few years back, it took so long to finally get over that and face my fears.... Let’s hope the next time I see an escalator I will forget this..

China's safety standards -- and indeed quality standards in general: be it engineering, human rights, health (do I have to mention COVID?), sanitation, etc -- are abysmal.

It's a beautiful country with rich history and vast range of different cultures containing wonderful people. But for a place called "The People's Republic of China," its authorities seem to really not give a shit about the people, often dropping discarded rocket debris onto their houses and allowing relaxed regulations of the storage of dangerous substances such that shit like this happens. (Don't worry, the official report says that only like 173 people died, almost all of whom were firefighters, so hopefully that helps you sleep better... assuming you don't ask any of the locals in Tianjin who will tell you the number is actually in the thousands.)

It's about as nice as you'd expect an authoritarian Communist country to be, really.

In short, I don't think you have to worry about your local mall's escalators any more than you've so far had to worry about NASA raining space debris onto your house or your governor allowing several metric tons of highly reactive and explosive materials to be stored next to your apartment building, if that gives you any comfort.

u/hivebroodling avatar

do I have to mention COVID

USA silently ducks head and walks away

more reply More replies

The problem in China is not the standards. AFAIK they have the same standards as everywhere else. The problem is that the standards are often ignored due to rampant corruption, a complete lack of transparency, and a culture that values "saving face" and avoiding embarrassment more than it values health and safety.

There is no way only a hundred died in that explosion. Only a brainwashed idiot believes in the official figures.

It really was terrifying, especially because they showed the child’s gnawed on hand, and then a gap where the woman’s body would have fallen into, rather than showing the body, maybe because they didn’t get it or they couldn’t. And imagine if you survived but were stuck down there. Claustrophobes, or really anybodies worst nightmare.

Wont do escalators after watching that and realizing it's just MACHINERY down there. Nah

Not to mention the metal pattern is painful on dog paws.

More replies

No dogs on escalators. I work in a vet hospital and i can't tell you how many dogs i've see lose toes because their owner didn't pick them up. Its a really gross and traumatic injury. Use common sense people!

u/ChavitoLocoChairo avatar

I recently fostered a dog I found. I've never had a dog. man it's like a whole new world of things to think about. who knew dogs needed eye drops or that they can't go on escalators?

u/Chippawah avatar

Might be worth getting a book on basic care if it’s all so new. You def are in the right direction knowing you have to think of lots of random things.

u/cabbeer avatar

Wait , what? They need eye drops?!??

u/FistulousPresentist avatar

If they have an eye infection.

More replies
u/Shwite avatar

Yeah, having never had a dog I would have guessed it was fine

More replies

Yeah dude. Even saw a video of a lady walking into an elevator and it closing before she realized her dog wasn’t even in it. Some swole brain guy walking by realized what just happened in a split second so he managed to get the leash off before the dog was yanked against the elevator and probably snapping its neck. So carelessness with leashed dogs around elevators can be just as devastating as escalators.

Don't feel badly! I've been a fur mom for ten years and honestly never thought about the dangers of dogs on escalators! I'm my defense, my oldest baby will NOT walk on metal of any kind sooooo I would've had to pick her up any way.

The dog's smarter than the owner. It would get sucked into that mangler. He should have taken the stairs or elevator

u/TecTazz avatar

Stairs or elevator for sure. Please keep your babies— dogs, cats, human, whatever— safe. They are worth the extra few minutes.

And you both get some much needed cardio to boot.

Love the positive spin ;)

We don't know that he wasn't always going to carry him, it looks like he just expected to get closer first. The way he immediately picks the dog up and not fussing, hesitating or looking confused makes me think he never intended to let the pupper ride

I think he did it for the camera - that's why the person was filming. My dog knows not to step on the escalator, so I'm sure this one does too.

Agreed. Of course. Good lord. Chill people.

Edit: it's mall rats movie clip for those afraid to click. No gore

u/Nicstevenson avatar

THAT KID IS ON THE ESCALATOR AGAIN

Let it go

More replies

Afraid to click, what happens?

Basically the first few min (which is the relevant part) shows a clip from a show/movie called Mullrats where two guys are casually talking on the escalator going down where they see a small child sitting on the fucking escalator stair going upward. After showing that scene one of the two dudes rants loudly about how the mother should manage her child well until the scene changes to something else ignoring the child in the escalator stairs.

More replies

He should learn to fear and RESPECT THE ESCALATOR.

You can see a glass elevator to the left. It was not out of his way to take the dog on it rather than the fear-inducing escalator.

[deleted]
[deleted]

It is my understanding that escalators require ALL pets to be carried when going up the escalator. It's not a frightened dog.

Probably shouldn’t take your dog up an escalator anyways right?

Yes. Ask vets how many traumatic injuries they see because some stupid owner decided to take an escalator instead of stairs.

Lol. I clicked on your link, had a laugh, then scrolled down one comment to encounter it again.

No, it makes complete sense. But we take escalators pretty regularly without a second thought, it's entirely possible that this just wouldn't cross your mind

Please do this, dog owners! Always carry your dog or take the elevator, or better yet, use the regular stairs! But DO NOT let a dog take a single step on an escalator. You do not want to see what can happen if the dog's nail gets stuck on the escalator's step (in between the clefts). Just one of the ways your dog can get hurt, and it happens more often than people realize. Please don't risk it.

Pro tip: anything you wouldn’t walk on barefoot you shouldn’t walk your dog on. Sidewalk too hot for the back of your palm? Too hot for your dog. Does a 1 year old know how an escalator work? Neither does your dog.

More replies

Its not like its any faster dogs go up stairs hella fast

u/Tasgall avatar

Doggo knows what's up. This is the proper way to do it.

How would a dog even come in contact with an elevator when most dogs are banned from shopping centres? Except for seeing eyed dogs of course and maybe assistant dogs.

u/delciotto avatar

You are allowed at a mall near me if you are going to the large petstore inside. Of course you would be asked to leave if you had a dog on the other side of the mall of course, you gotta enter through the nearest entrance and go straight there.

More replies

Yeah well there aren't always normal stairs available though. My main concern here is the leash, like yeah it can only really get caught at the top and bottom, but it still makes me uncomfortable that it is just hanging their and not tied up.

Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don’t hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent – I don’t care which one – but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator.

This one's in Italy, apparently yes.

This is a mall near Milano, Italy. Dogs are allowed in, not inside the supermarket (usually).

What is a dog doing in a mall in the first place?

Mom said it’s my turn to post this.

I mean it’s cute but also stand to the right you heathens.

The dog is the smartest thing in this video because if a fully grown humans foot is able to get sucked in just IMAGINE a paw or tail. Holy shit the fact that dogs are even allowed on those things is BAFFLING.

Why be in a shopping mall with your dog in the first place? Is this some american thing I dont understand as a European?

hell, if i were naked and covered in long hair i’d be afraid of the escalator, too.

Or you could not take the dog to the mall. Just a thought.

I love how everyone just stopped to admire.

Don’t ride the escalator with your long haired pet.

If I have to explain this to you, please bring crayons with you.

Fun Fact: The “Escalator Test” is one of the major tests dogs need to pass when checking their suitability to support a person with vision impairment. Most dogs will freak out, which is why you can spend years raising seeing-eye dogs, but many won’t make it through the training program.
