Talib Kweli, Killer Mike and Trae the Truth are among thespeakers at the upcoming A3C Action Summit in Atlanta, Georgia, poised to help non-profit organizations educate and empower through the power of hip-hop. The summit is part of the A3C Festival & Conference (Oct. 3 to 7) and two day-long exclusive Wu-Tang hang experience.
On Oct. 4 and 5, the Auburn Ave Research Library for African American Studies will host the event that also includes Dr. David Wall Rice, director of the Institute for Social Justice Theory and Praxis at the College's Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership, and politician and community activist Bruce Franks Jr.
On the 3rd, at the welcome reception, held at the Loudermilk Center, A3C and ChooseATL will honor three men who have make a significant social and cultural impact throughout the hip-hop community — Jermaine Dupri with the Cultural Icon Award, Wyclef Jean with the Social Impact Award, and Rodney Carmichael with the Combat Jack Storyteller Award.
The music festival on the 6th and 7th includes Wu-Tang Clan, Lil Wayne, The Diplomats, Curren$y, Young MA, J.I.D, PRhyme, Mannie Fresh, Westside Gunn + Conway, Childish Major and Deante Hitchcock. The conference includes dozens of speakers from all areas of the music industry.
A3C launched the Action Summit for social justice in 2017 to discuss challenges, receive education from community leaders and develop initiatives that are actionable.
Co-developed and spearheaded by the Center for Civic Innovation, the boot camp will offer training on the operation and growth of a non-profit, covering such topics as management, sustainability, scalability, messaging and marketing, with one-on-one mentorship sessions.
This year’s A3C’s Action Summit cohort includes:
Hip-Hop Mentoring Cypher Sessions: A creative wellness program that uses hip hop to engage teens on issues of critical thinking, emotional wellbeing, and social justice.
Words Liive: a technology-powered, music-based literacy program that aims to bring ¾ of the student population in the US to grade-level reading by 2040.
Cool Moms Dance Too: Fun, multigenerational fitness and dance classes designed to improve the mental and physical health and connectedness of families;
Supreme MCs Rule Hip Hop Expression Program: A music education program that uses hip hop as a gateway to self-discovery and positive coping skills.
FlexIn FlexOut: Workshops get youth dancing inside detention and foster care facilities, coupled with programming to continue the mentorship once kids get outside.
“The A3C Accelerator shines light on some of the most incredible grassroots ideas from around the country,” said Rohit Malhotra, director of the Center for Civic Innovation, in a statement. “Every year, we are inspired and humbled by the stories of people who, against many odds, are building programs for people in their community. It’s amazing to just be a part of their journey, and in a time like right now, their work is necessary to showcase.”
