realtor.com

Who doesn’t love Tom Hanks? No one, that’s who! And apparently that ardor even extends to the Oscar-winner’s childhood home, which went on sale and created a splash across the web. A floating home in Alameda, CA, where the movie star lived during his teen years, has become a must-see listing.

Hanks himself recently confirmed his tenure in the home on Instagram, causing clicks to churn, and propelling the place to the top of this week’s most popular homes on realtor.com®. While interest from buyers has been muted thus far, the buzz online has been, ahem, “Big.”

Other homes creating waves this week include a historic restoration project in Iowa, a lakefront showstopper in Texas, and a horse lover’s dream in South Carolina.

Gallop along with us as we run down the full list of this week’s most popular homes…

2. 1645 W 12th St, Davenport, IA

Price: $300,000
Why it’s here: Restore a historic home to its former glory! This grand estate was designed in 1910 by the architectural firm of Clausen and Clausen in the Jacobethan Revival style for Dr. Kuno Struck and his wife, Norma.

In 1984, the red brick and limestone abode was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Now on the market, it has enchanted many real estate watchers.

Details of the five-bedroom home include wood wainscoting and trim, Italian terrazzo tile, and stained-glass windows. In the living room, French doors lead to a solarium with marble flooring and access to a patio. The incredible dining room features a plaster honeycomb ceiling, oak hardwood flooring, a wood-burning fireplace, bay window, and built-ins.

However, we recommend that you don’t fall head over heels for this beautiful abode, given that it is already listed as in pending sale status.

1. 2394 Mariner Square Dr # C1, Alameda, CA

Price: $600,000
Why it’s here: Ahoy there! Play your own version of “Cast Away” on the two-story floating home once inhabited by Tom Hanks. He lived there as a teenager from 1973-1976, with his father, Amos Hanks, and stepmother, Frances. The A-list connection created a wave of clicks, guiding it into this week’s top spot. However, potential buyers proved to be a harder sell, with not much of a showing at the open house events.

One potential drawback? Landlubbers need not apply. This 1,152-square-foot, two-bedroom home is for those with sea legs, and the stomach for some remodeling. Built in 1973, the water-based abode is now 45 years old. Although the exterior has been refurbished, the interior living area and kitchen appliances are out of date.

But the charm of sitting on the deck on the San Francisco Bay, in addition to the A-list pedigree, might enchant a buyer to come sail away.
