Former Inter midfielder Aron Winter has spoken about the joy he felt upon winning the 1998 UEFA Cup with the Nerazzurri, praising the ‘quality’ and ‘mentality’ of his old side.

Winter was in attendance at Friday’s group stage draw for the UEFA Europa League in Monte Carlo and had the chance to reminisce on the night that Inter recorded a 3-0 success over his former club Lazio, securing what was the club’s third UEFA Cup title in the space of eight years.

“It was a beautiful day,” the 51 year-old said. “We had a great team and I was very happy to win my first trophy in Italy against my former club.

“I consider myself fortunate to have played in that team. We had everything we needed to win, lots of quality and a great mentality: it was a very strong group.”

Winter made 119 appearances in all competitions for Inter during a three-year spell at the club, before returning to his native Holland when he joined Ajax in the summer of 1999.
