Carnifex have just dropped their Bury Me in Blasphemy EP, crushing the cover song game with versions of Slipknot’s “The Heretic Anthem” and Nine Inch Nails’ “Head Like a Hole.” On top of that, the death metallers released a new song — the EP’s title track.

Tackling not one, but two, celebrated songs isn’t a task to be taken lightly. For “The Heretic Anthem,” Carnifex didn’t stray far from Slipknot’s original Iowa cut. The band kept Sid Wilson’s countdown intro, Joey Jordison’s wicked drum parts and the disgusting crunch of Slipknot’s trademark guitar tone, while Carnifex vocalist Scott Lewis takes a deeper, more purely guttural approach to Corey Taylor’s vocal parts, putting his own stamp on the Knot anthem.

As for “Head Like a Hole,” Carnifex’s stylistic departure is far more pronounced, turning the Nine Inch Nails classic into a pure deathcore song. The guys even throw in some double kick, a few pinch harmonics and a full-on breakdown.

“Bury Me in Blasphemy” kicks off the EP with a furious pace, mixing relentless drums with traditional mid-tempo chugging and riffage. Orchestral keyboard pieces from Shawn Cameron add another layer of depth to the solid beatdown track.
