Tope 10: Lucha Underground (October 2018)

Ultima Lucha Cuatro is tonight! We’ve got a little time to kill until Part One airs at 8pm ET on El Rey Network, so let’s get pumped up by checking out the best of Lucha Underground from October.

Each and every episode of Lucha Underground features maneuvers, quotes, outfits, props, scenes, and more that deserve recognition. That is where the Tope 10 comes in. This list shows appreciation for the moments that are more exciting than a flying tope.

(This edition of the Tope 10 will be an abbreviated version for each episode covering all of October so as not to overheat any devices with an overload of exciting GIFs and photos.)

5. Brother, sister bonding

Nothing brings a family together like brawling each other in a wrestling match. Marty Martinez appreciated Mariposa’s motivational speeches, so he gave her the first shot at his newly acquired Lucha Underground Championship.

Time will tell if Mariposa will hold a grudge at Marty breaking her arm. Based on the character’s history, I would bet no in general, but yes if Marty loses the belt to Pentagon DARK at Ultima Lucha Cuatro in a Cero Miedo match.

4. Intense ingenuity

Killshot stomping down on Son of Havoc’s arm like that was a maneuver I’ve never seen before. Damn, it looks painful.

3. Three’s company

Enjoy Ivelisse’s suplex train with Paul London and El Bunny.

With mighty moves like that in a standard trios team bout, I can’t wait to see what is unleashed in the three-way elimination Trios Championship match at Ultima Lucha Cuatro.

2. Rabbit claw

The White Rabbit’s in-ring debut left a memorable stain in our memories. The hairless hare used the mandible claw on Joey Ryan, but he took it to another level with bloody damage so severe that Ryan will not be ready for Ultima Lucha Cuatro.

1. Chairicane

During play time with her brother, Mariposa rained down a hurricane of chairs atop Marty for about one solid minute. It was glorious and definitely on the short list for moment of the season.

5. Cameraman down

Even when something goes wrong in the Temple, it goes oh so right.

4. Ricky and Rosa sitting in a ring

K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

Eww, gross. Ricky would later kiss that dirty doll on the lips. Eww, double gross.

3. Fenix rope bouncing

No commentary needed. Just marvel in Fenix’s prowess.

2. Ass-kicking Taya

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. Angry Taya is the best Taya. You would think being slammed through a cake on your wedding day might cause caution. Oh, no. Not with Taya. She straight up called out Matanza to the ring and proceed to kick his ass by stomping a mudhole. Taya’s fury didn’t stop Matanza for long, but it was awesome while it lasted.

1. Squish the spider

Reklusa put up one heck of a fight in her Temple debut, but she couldn’t outlast the practitioner of the dark arts. Pentagon DARK used the apron to his advantage on various occasions, including a package piledriver of doom.

Reklusa would go on to kick out of that attack and even destroy Pentagon, Canadian-style. Pentagon was too tough though. Another package piledriver would end her night in the ring. But, Reklusa was not out altogether as she aided Marty Martinez with a barbwire bat and gasoline. The Cero Miedo match is going to be lit.

6. Not worth its weight in paper

Lucha Underground

Look at the size of that contract. It is thicker than any textbook I ever had to study. Leave it to Famous B to bring the chuckles. Also amusing was Sammy Guevara’s manner of terminating the contract.

5. Around the world

Go, Aerostar, go. Use that stooge as a your own personal gymnastics apparatus.

4. Strong toss

Johnny Mundo does lots of flying around the ring, but never like that. Jake Strong’s strong toss was impressive.

3. Brutal mauling

Lucha Underground

After Johnny Mundo’s loss to Jake Strong, Matanza came on the scene to maul Mundo. It was vicious ground and pound with headbutts thrown in. So much so that I feared for Mundo’s life in the Sacrifice to the Gods match. Mundo has a better chance now, but I’ll discuss that later. Back to Matanza, his display of ferociousness gave me the tingles.

2. Dante Fox returns

Dante Fox has returned to the Temple. He was a surprise announcement into a battle royal. Even though Fox didn’t get to do much that night, I was still super excited that he was there at all. The Believers in the Temple felt the same way.

1. Limo Lord?

El Rey Network

In the beginning of the episode, Jake Strong declined Antonio Cueto’s offer for a shot at the Lucha Underground Championship in the Ultima Lucha Cuatro main event. Strong wanted to prove himself. Upon leaving, Strong used a strong voice to remind Cueto that the Temple is now Strong’s. The voice was a creepy, demon-possessed sound.

When I was collecting GIFs for the Dario Cueto tribute, I noticed several hints from the Limo Lord’s mouth that I had previously forgotten. Comments like Councilman Delgado saying Matanza wouldn’t be the only one having fun, and such. I now have no doubt that Jake Strong is the Limo Lord’s human vessel. That was such an awesome surprise and an excellent way to bring the older side story back to the forefront.

5. Safety first

Oh, it is just Drago ushering in a forklift in the middle of a match. Nothing to see here.

When Lucha Underground does the ridiculous, it is so over-the-top that the moment is enjoyable. Just look at how Drago’s helmet has holes for his horns.

4. Bow and arrow submission

During the Seven to Survive match, King Cuerno displayed his technical skill with a brutal bow and arrow submission. The twist was that he shifted position and it looked like he was going to rip his opponent’s arm out of its socket. I’ve never seen that bow and arrow variation before. Impressive.

3. Forklift leap

Aerostar jumping off a forklift was just another day in the Temple for the Believers.

2. Flying Fox

Dante Fox was rolling in Seven to Survive. Then he upped the ante. His nickname should be Tails after the flying fox.

1. Gauntlet gift

Johnny Mundo looked determined to kick Matanza’s ass with all that rooftop practicing, but we all know he didn’t stand a chance. Aerostar came to the rescue by granting the usage of the gauntlet. Power surged through Johnny’s eyes as he played with his new toy.

Johnny Mundo already does amazing moves in the ring. Imagine what he could be capable of with the power of the gauntlet. I’m expecting some crazy stuff to go down in the Sacrifice to the Gods match.
