There’s a lot of fun to be had in the snap ’n’ flex with which Kiedis flips out this nonsense. He and Flea (now 53) clearly know how daft they are yet you can also hear how happy they sound to still be pogoing along.

Thanks to the band’s own accumulated expertise and the masterly stitching qualities of Danger Mouse, it’s a tightly woven affair, never messy or maudlin or self-indulgent; a dreamcoat of many colours, a marble rye of genres.

It doesn’t sound exactly like classic-vintage Chili Peppers, but it might just sound like how you remember them.

[The production by Danger Mouse] doesn’t make much difference--they still sound exactly the same.

Like every Chili Peppers album, the 13-track The Getaway suffers from bloat.

The tame, disco-fried band they’ve become is the only group you’ll hear on the second half of the album, and the instrumental moments that provide redemption wear thin as Kiedis dampens their purpose.

Fans will probably find The Getaway an improvement on 2011’s I’m With You, citing tunes such as Detroit. Sceptics will continue to boggle at their enduring charmlessness, a problem not even Danger Mouse can fix.

A beautiful reinvention of a legendary band, which can even after 30 years surprise us in a very positive way.

The sound is new, but still familiar and you can recognize the Chilli's right at the first listen.

The mixture of musical styles may seem a little too adventurous, but overall it is a great piece of art worth listening.

The tracks I personally highlight: Dark Necessities, Goodbye Angels, Go robot, Encore

Great! I would give 9.5 but I can give 10! I'm with You: 8.0; Stadium Arcadium: 9.0; By The Way: 9.75. The best album is Blood Sugar Sex Magic Expand

Was 1 Hot Minute anWhen discussing the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, change-via-era is often a heavy part of the discussion. Was 1 Hot Minute an overlooked gem or a disaster with Dave Navarro replacing the eccentric, mercurial, but undoubtedly talented John Frusciante? And what of the Peppers after Frusciante left a second time? It's the kind of thing that is appropriate, but can be too much of a running tangent.

With their 2016 release "The Getaway" which is album number 2 featuring Josh Klinghoffer replacing Frusciante after his second departure, they've found their groove again. Their first with Klinghoffer, 2011's "I'm With You" showed that their new choice clearly could do the job well, and while not Frusciante, had a style all his own to bring to the Peppers' music. On The Getaway, they make the wise choice of changing producers, bringing in Danger Mouse to man the boards. Some long time fans mourn the loss of the raw, dirty, hyper-kinetic sound of the band in their pre-Blood Sugar Sex Magick days. Whether it is the production cojones of Danger Mouse or just the Peppers finding a new stride late career to credit to this change, the transformation is real, and it paints a fine way forward. The Getaway recaptures some of the raw fury of their early days, and blends that with a lived-in, easygoing sense of calm and peace. All 3 principal members are in their 50's, and it wouldn't make sense to be trying to re-hash the randy anthems of their younger days. The shift in mood suits them, but at the same time lets them flex their talents. Danger Mouse' production lets this shine through much better as well - from Flea's bass licks opening up lead single "Dark Necessities" and looping along to neatly tie up later track "Feasting on the flowers" - on this album, all 4 of the band members get to shine equally. Not to knock on Rubin, he is a worthy producer, but Danger Mouse seems to get where the band is in the current day and tailors the soundscape to match with much more precision. Kiedis' lyrics are as inscrutable as ever in places, but when the rich, luscious music layered around them sounds as good as it does on "The Getaway" - most listeners would be hard pressed to worry about that. Definitely recommended.

Red Hot Chili Peppers eagerly embraces a change of sound in The Getaway, giving off a more poppy feel than in the past. To my surprise, the calmer, piano (shocking for me) vibe actually worked pretty well, and despite these changes, they managed to make their music really sound like them. Of course, this album isn’t quite as consistently good as their previous two albums, but overall I’d say that The Getaway is still pretty dang good.

I wish I could provide my entire song-by-song commentary, but every time I do it sends me an error, which sucks.

As a whole, I was pretty pleased with The Getaway. It was much different than I expected, with the vibe pretty different from previous Red Hot Chili Peppers releases. I thought for the most part the new sound worked really well, especially in songs like Dark Necessities and Sick Love, which I could tell held a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers DNA despite different instrumentation. Fans of Red Hot Chili Peppers should enjoy this album, as there are several songs that really rock. Highlights: The Getaway, Dark Necessities, We Turn Red, Sick Love, Go Robot, Detroit, Encore, and The Hunter.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really bad and boring album, sounds like an improvised work of constrution as they were recording a demo, with various kind of mellows from the beginning to the end which give a general sense of frustration, following the usual repetitive style of their last records. They were probably attempting to create some different music even if they got pretty much old now, but they just obtained another mockery from people who dislike the band. Expand
