One by one, carmakers are releasing an app for Apple’s Watch, with VW now joining the ranks of its fellow German companies BMW and Porsche.

So, what will you be able to do with VW’s “Car-Net” app Apple Watch? Well, you can wow your non-techie friends by remotely locking and unlocking your car, and checking the status of doors, windows and sun roof (open or closed).

Some other possibly useful features include a map of the current vehicle location with walking or driving directions, remotely honk the horn and flash the lights, and the ability to “receive speed and boundary alert notifications to monitor certain drivers in their households”, you know, in case your youngster decides to take your car out for street racing.

Owners of VWs with gasoline and TDI diesel engines can also check their fuel level, while those driving the all-electric e-Golf will be able to monitor their current charge and estimated driving range, turn charging on or off and access climate control features.

The VW Car-Net app for Apple’s smart-watch will work on select trims of 2014 and later Beetle, CC, Eos, Jetta, Passat and Tiguan models and on all trims of 2015 and later Golf, Golf GTI, Golf R, Golf SportWagen and e-Golf models.
